The Book Club

Sunday, 1 March 2015 Series ReturnThe Book Club returns in a brand new timeslot on a brand new day. What began as The First Tuesday Book Club will now be essential viewing for all book-lovers at 6pm on the first Sunday of each month.

To celebrate this exciting move, The Book Club will be introducing new elements to the show. We want to hear from our audience so we will be hitting the streets, libraries, book events and writers' festivals to find out what our viewers are reading. There will also be room for viewer comments and questions on the Classic of the Month via new video upload features on The Book Club website. Each episode we'll pick a video question from a viewer to get the panel's conversation started.

The first new look The Book Club will broadcast on ABC TV at 6pm on 1 March 2015 recorded at the Perth Writers' Festival.

Joining Jennifer Byrne, Marieke Hardy and Jason Steger will be international guests from the Perth Writers' Festival: Elizabeth Gilbert (Eat, Pray, Love; The Signature of All Things) and John Lanchester (How to Speak About Money; Capital; The Debt to Pleasure).

On the reading list is Australian writer James Bradley's new quietly hopeful dystopian novel Clade and Elizabeth Gilbert brings along her classic pick, British novelist Barbara Trapido's delightful 1982 coming-of-age debut Brother of the More Famous Jack.

Tune in the first Sunday of each month for your book fix, now with added input from our beloved THE BOOK CLUB audience.

As Sheriff Anderssen (Richard Dormer) shuts DCI Morton (Stanley Tucci) out of the investigation and hunts for a potential murder suspect out in the Arctic wilderness, the Met detective proceeds with his own enquiries.

As news of the murder spreads through the community, local miner Ronnie Morgan (Johnny Harris) decides it's time to leave town and secretly slips away with his daughter, Carrie (Elizabeth Dormer-Phillips), while Governor Odegard (Sofie Gråbøl) takes action to stop the recent events affecting her plans to turn Fortitude into a tourism destination.

Elena's (Verónica Echegui) relationship with Frank (Nicholas Pinnock) is put to the test when she becomes aware of his son's injuries - injuries that were inadvertently caused by their adulterous actions.

Natalie Yelburton (Sienna Guillory), a scientist at Fortitude's Arctic Research Centre, is asked to assist with the investigation, but with Morton and Odegard both pushing her for information as well, she's not sure who to trust.

Plus, Sheriff Dan Anderssen learns of Elena's involvement with Frank.

Ebola Frontline

Ebola Frontline features unique raw footage captured by Medécins Sans Frontières - Doctors Without Borders' (MSF) - staff working in the high risk zone of an Ebola Case Management Centre in Sierra Leone.

With specially adapted cameras attached to their goggles, these medical volunteers give viewers a very real sense of what it is like working in the blistering West African heat in a plastic personal protection suit.

The medical team's pain and despair is all too clear when they have to separate parents from a sick child and then when that child loses their fight for life.

But even in these desperately difficult circumstances the program captures moments of euphoria as patients who have been cured leave the centre.

British doctor and MSF volunteer Dr Javid Abdelmoniem gives a unique insight through his video diary charting his work at the clinic.

Exclusive, on-the-ground footage also reveals the medical staff's frustrations at the lack of support from the international community and pharmaceutical companies in fighting the virus, which has been responsible for more than 5,000 deaths since the outbreak began.

Judith Lucy Is All Woman

If she'd been born one generation earlier, Judith Lucy's career options probably would have ranged all the way from housewife to hairdresser. Even her chosen career of stand-up comedy was a pretty blokey world when she entered it, and Australia still has one of the most segregated workforces in the world - e.g. plumbers will more than likely be men, while 90% of nurses are women.

So to find out why, Judith swaps her mic for a bed pan and lets her nursing skills loose on a hospital ward, then catches up with two pioneering female pilots, including Deborah Lawrie, who had to take Ansett Airlines to court in 1979 for the right to fly a plane.

Judith goes swimming with the unstoppable force that is CEO and former Queensland Premier Anna Bligh, who sheds light on the challenges - and elaborate toilet rituals - for women in parliament, she straps on her soccer boots to discover that women who are good with balls often make the best leaders, and straightens a few things out - including her curly locks - with journalist and TV presenter Annabel Crabb.

In the battle of the sexes, it's pistols at dawn - or at least mid-afternoon - as Judith and Mick Molloy fire up at the shooting range.

Outback ER

Experience just how different a life-threatening crisis can be in one of the most isolated locations on earth. Outback ER is a new 8 x half hours series screening Thursdays at 8pm on ABC.

In episode four, brothers require urgent treatment after they both cut their hands in a freak circular saw accident. Paramedics attend to a child with a suspected spinal injury, a young man has an embarrassing pain in his bottom, and the hospital staff come to terms with the death of a patient.

Brothers Keith and Paul arrive at the emergency department both with hand injuries. They had been restoring an old car when Keith slipped with a circular saw and cut his fingers. In that moment he offloaded the saw to his brother Paul who cut his hand as well. Keith's injury is far more serious and it's a race against time to save his fingers.

Twenty-two-year old Peter has an embarrassing problem - he has a sore bottom. Dr Sandy Clarke's examination has him wincing with pain, but he maintains his sense of humour throughout the procedure.

The whole emergency department comes into action to save a man's life, but sadly is unsuccessful. Afterwards the team debrief, which provides a rare insight into how hospital staff deal with a patient's death.

A backyard party ends abruptly when four-year-old Ramsay goes into seizure after jumping off the top of a slide. Doctors are baffled as to what caused Ramsay's seizure as he did not have a head injury. But a greater concern comes from his spinal x-ray.

Lincoln (James Stewart) is drawn deeper into his university world when he's asked to give a tutorial on the topic of stress and anxiety. His academic research is interrupted by the news that hit-man Danny Stoltz has busted out of jail and is somewhere in Sydney.

Bec's (Kate Jenkinson) decision to contact Ash (Ryan Johnson) leads to a renewal of their friendship, but as Bec tries to explain her circumstances, she finds herself spinning so many lies that she's in danger of jeopardising her family's security.

Adding to her anxiety, the owner of the car that she side-swiped when driving the kids to school has tracked her down and he is demanding money. If she doesn't make restitution, he will involve the police and take legal action.

Meantime Lincoln becomes convinced that he's being followed by Danny Stoltz - the same man who knifed him in prison. As Lincoln's anxiety rises over his family's safety, Mitchell's (Lincoln Younes) resentment at being dragged back from the Gold Coast finally explodes into a horrifying confrontation with his father, and Tara (Olivia DeJonge) is caught in the crossfire.

With the problem of the side-swiped car escalating, Lincoln convinces Warwick (Kim Gyngell) to help him carry out an ingenious solution. However, their celebration is cut short when Lincoln catches sight of Stoltz, his would-be assassin. As their dangerous game of cat and mouse plays out and Lincoln thinks he has the upper hand, he will discover a truth that will shock him to his core.

The Doctor Blake Mysteries: By The Southern Cross

Tensions are stirred when police break up visiting Melbourne Uni students celebrating the Eureka stockade anniversary. Emotions then spill over at the local pub that night when a fight breaks out between the students and the locals.

But overnight things turn deadly and student leader Des Sommerville is found dead the next day by his girlfriend at the Eureka Memorial site. Suspicion fall on one of the locals involved in the earlier fight.

During the examination Dr Blake removes gravel from the deceased’s arm and quickly discovers that it doesn't match the gravel found at the memorial site. The body had been moved post mortem and suspicion shifts to the students and Communist Party members.

Meanwhile Minister for Industry and Commerce, Martin O'Brien, is in town to launch an initiative, and has an ultimatum for his daughter Mattie and tensions between Dr Blake and Chief Superintendent Munro continue to simmer.

Sidney tries and fails to resist when he is pressured by his sister Jen (Fiona Button) into attending Amanda's engagement dinner - he hates making small talk with the upper classes. Not only that, but he knows that Amanda's rich and irritatingly handsome fiancé Guy (Tom Austen) will be in attendance. As Sidney tries to cope with the evening by sinking one too many drinks, old tensions run high between the school friends of Amanda and Jen. But the evening really erupts when Amanda's engagement ring goes missing, and Jen's boyfriend Johnny (Ukweli Roach) is accused of stealing it.

With tensions still simmering, Sidney is called by Geordie in the early morning with terrible news - one of the guests at the dinner party has been found dead, and this time he's certain it's murder. With everyone in shock, Sidney carefully assists Geordie in interviewing everyone about the night before - and it becomes clear that the fingers of suspicion are pointing firmly at Johnny. And when evidence comes to light that seems to confirm Johnny as the killer, it would seem that it's cased closed for Geordie and Sidney.

However, with Sidney believing that Johnny is innocent, he begins to work on a different theory - and also finds that he will need the help of nervous new curate Leonard (Al Weaver) to unmask the true killer. Not only that, but he will also need to find the one thing he would rather stayed lost - Amanda's missing engagement ring.
