Daedalus and IcarusLong, long ago an artist named Daedalus lived with his son, Icarus. Daedalus was very talented and designed buildings. His work was admired across the lands. One day, the king asked Daedalus to come to visit him. He showed Daedalus his most prized pet, the Minotaur. It had the head of a bull on a human body. It was a terrifying creature! Despite its terrible appearance, the king loved the Minotaur and wanted Daedalus to build it a beautiful place to live. Daedalus was very clever and decided to build a Labyrinth, or maze, around the Minotaur. He wanted it to be a hard maze so that the Minotaur could not escape, and the king would be happy. Icarus helped Daedalus build the Labyrinth. The king was delighted when it was finished because it was beautiful and challenging. The king was a very greedy man. He wanted Daedalus to work only for him. So, the king imprisoned Daedalus and his son. Daedalus dreamed of escape. He observed birds flying overhead and had a genius idea! He built wings out of bird feathers and wax so that he and his son could fly away. Before taking off, Daedalus reminded Icarus not to fly too close to the sun. The wings were made of wax, after all. Father and son rose into the air. They flapped their arms, and their wings allowed them to soar through the sky. They flew over the sparkling ocean, so happy to be free from prison and away from the king. Icarus dared to go higher and higher in the sky. Daedalus called to his son, warning him of the sun’s warmth, but it was too late. Icarus’s wings began to melt and the feathers quickly fell away. Icarus fell into the ocean. Daedalus had no choice but to continue his journey to safety and freedom alone.
