David and Jody is a poignantly moving Classic Rock Musical. A miraculous love story of two young people who find that love creates and inhabits, worlds of its own. The problems they must face and the decisions they make, have all the significance and impact of a modern day rock and roll parable.

SYNOPSIS

Jody and David are facing their futures and trying to succeed using their own special talents. They think they can chase their dreams on their own with out harming their love for each other.Life will soon teach them otherwise.(Be gentle God, for they are but young lovers.)

Jody is an aspiring model/actress. She is not strikingly beautiful, but she has a curious beauty about her, a marriage of sassy with smart and sexual. She has recently been crowned Queen of the Fall Frolic, ( a local beauty contest) and Homecoming Queen at her College. David has asked her to the dance and before she could think of a good excuse, she has said yes to his request. They have dated for about two years, off and on, and David has fallen seriously in love with Jody, while she likes David, but is caught up with herself. As David told a friend, “ the trouble with Jody and I is that we’re both in love with her.” David is a good guy and Jody is attracted to bad boys. Go figure.

The musical opens with David recording a song entitled “Freedom Calls, “an ode about the Cuban rafters,and more specifically about David’s grandparents who thought they were too old to heed freedoms call and now find themselves old and alone at home in Cuba.David’s grandparents remained in Cuba while all the rest of their family followed freedoms call and rafted to Miami. Left alone with their photographs and memories, David misses them greatly. They had feared they were too old to make the crossing. David is inspired by the brave volunteer pilots of Brothers to the Rescue, who fly out to help their fellow exiles. He records this song to honor them and donates all the proceeds from the songs success to the Brothers cause. The song gets local airplay and is fairly successful. David plays local concerts and develops a loyal following of fans as well as more radio time and interviews on Miami area stations. He headlines the Fourth of July Freedom rally at Tropical Park, playing in front of 30,000 or so appreciative friends and fans. Freedom Calls, raises about $20.000 which David donates to the Brothers. Positive press articles follow that enhance David’s profile in Miami. The Herald and the New Times praise David’s talent. David gets his first taste of fame.

David is a talented singer/ songwriter and an excellent musician. Old Billy Bones, his sax player from New Orleans, and a wise old

man of experience, is David’s friend and mentor. Of course, loving Jody serves as his Muse. Billy has submitted one of David’s Demo tapes to a studio in New York and they want to sign David to a music contract as a singer/ songwriter and studio musician. Jody knows nothing about this yet, he is waiting to surprise her with the good news at the dance and to ask her to accompany him to New York to follow his dream, not knowing Jody has dreams of her own, and that he is the one to get the big surprise.

At the homecoming dance, he tells her his tale of good fortune but is hurt and stunned to learn that she has won a scholarship to a Modeling School in LA. (as the winner of the Fall Frolic Beauty Contest) and is leaving next month to start school. Seeing how hurt he is, she reassures him that she will be coming back to him and that nothing will change between them. She vows she will love David always. David is no fool and does not believe her. He asks her to change her mind, but knows she won’t, and in the end, simply wishes her farewell. Hoping she will do just that, fair well in her new future. That night he pens his first local hit song, the heart felt sad lament, Tears in My Eyes.

It was the homecoming dance,

Farewell means both goodbye, and fare well.Tears in My Eyes is followed by the aptly named Farewell, and is released right before Jody leaves for greener grass. It is a heartbreaking lament about the fear of losing love, and this is how it was first sung acoustically by David, to Jody. “The times they are a changing,” said David’s idol, Bob Dylan. Farewell

As Jody’s departure dates creeps closer, David’s song rises to the top of the local charts. He is becoming a celebrity of sorts and making good money. She is jealous of his success and new status with the girls and wonders if she is making a mistake going to LA. In a moment of doubt she tells David she has changed her mind and has decided to go with him to New York City and she’ll forget all about modeling school.

Since sharing Jody’s modeling school news and trip to L.A. with Billy, Billy has reassured David that it won’t be for long and that everything will be all right, she’d just hold him back and be in his way in New York. “Besides,” Billy says, “if you really love her you won’t stand in the way of her dreams.” David, laced with confusion and contradiction, decides that maybe he is being unfair to Jody, compromising her dream for his, and tells her that she should go to L.A. to modeling school and that he needs to go to New York, alone. Against her better judgment, she reluctantly agrees.

Billy decides not to go with David to New York,believing he is just too old to follow the call of freedom.He encourages young David to listen to opportunities knock, telling him to risk it all and to heed freedoms call. Fame and fortune are fickle and they may not knock again. As a young man, Billy passed up opportunities for drugs, and he has always regretted it. Now, like Nike, Billy believes in “Just do it”.

Jody and David exchange one last kiss at the airport, and then they fly, like hopeful angels, chasing their own separate dreams, unable to see that true love is standing right in front of them.

Arriving with naive visions of stardom dancing in her head, Jody attends modeling school, and goes on casting calls. Short of living money, she succumbs to the pressure put on her by producers who understand the needs of young struggling models, and can convince them that just the right role is around the corner, if they will only make the producer happy and fill his needs. He promises to take care of her, if she will do the same for him. Jody falls for these false valentines and is discarded, when no longer needed by the movers and shakers, she had shaken and moved, for money and broken promises. Depression leads to despair and despair to drugs. Soon she is out on the streets, trying to make ends meet. She may not be at rock bottom but she’s in its zip code.

Her train wreck of a life finally comes to the end of the line when she finds out she is pregnant, God only knows by whom.

At first she’d exchanged letters and a few “How’s it going?” calls with David, always she lied and told him she was faring well. Drowning in her own failure, she is unaware of David’s rapid assent to stardom.

David, Jody’s jack of hearts, is exposed to life in the Big Apple. One night at a bar a prostitute tells David her sad story of her descent into a hookers hell of drugs and faceless Johns. She tells him her terrifying trip from shooting star to fallen star.Loving for the money, because she loves and needs the money.David writes this rocker from the point of view of her ex boyfriend and lover. It is an instant radio hit.

She was a girl down the street .She used to walk so fine.She had the looks and the money,but I never thought she'd walk that line.

Troubled times have entered,she's got her point of view.You got caught sniffing that mirror,oh no, girl, what are you going to do now? Living day by day, you know she's tiptoeing on that wire.When I saw her, she turned and said,“ I got in the line of fire.”

Ironically, Jody is walking on “Mother’s” beach in L.A. when she hears The Queen of Diamonds on the radio. She feels like the song is about her, (it’s not) but in her highness, she has no idea it is a composition of David’s. “That’s me,” Jody thought as she listened, “ The Queen of Diamonds,” lovin’ for the money.

To try and stop her hurting heart, Jody tells David she has a new boyfriend (cocaine) and to just go on with his life.Later, shame causes her to refuse his calls altogether. Finally. hopelessness put her on a Trailways bus back home. She arrives home unexpectedly and expecting .She had hoped to come home in fame on a private jet plane, instead she crept off the bus, drenched in shame.She takes two jobs to make ends meet, one at a local dime store and the other at the South-Side Beauty Shop.She can’t look her friends in the eye and often wishes she could simply lie down and die. Only the baby inside of her keeps her going thru the motions. The mess they’re in is not the baby’s fault, and God knows she could use someone to love unconditionally, a reason to live. Whether she likes it or not, her wish will soon be granted. There’s no stopping Mother Nature.

Jody lived in a real small town,There wasn’t much ever came around.But once a year a fair came through And it crowned a queen for a night or two.

Jody picked up her entry blank, She got it down at the Harvest BankShe filled it in with a hope and a dream

She’d be a princess, maybe a queen

Jody’s day was made much betterWhen she received her acceptance letter.She shopped for a dress and did up her hairAnd she wondered what a queen should wear?

A sequin gown was the choice she madeAnd “Your Cheatin’ Heart” was the song she played.For days on end she danced around and sung that song in her sequin gown.

The night arrived and the tent was packedShe shook with fear but she never turned backShe was sure she’d lost but when she was doneBut when it was over, Hey… Jody won!They put a tin crown upon her headshe still can’t remember just what she said,but one thing she knew, she was sure of this,she was gonna’ be somebody now, she couldn’t miss…Look out Hollywood, hello modeling school… Bye bye, Hicksville…

She promised her boyfriend that she’d be back But that was just to throw him off the track.She flew to Hollywood and Charm Modeling SchoolJody wasn’t going to be nobodies fool, ( or so she thought.)

Jody’s casting calls usually ended up in someone’s bedThis girl was in way over her head.She believed everything those liars said,before she knew it her heart was dead.

Jody gave it away in bits and snatchesshe handed it out like motel matches.Look at the men that she’s gone under,no wonder her soul’s been torn asunder..

And now, kinda’ like the final strawJody found out she was going to be a ma.Pregnant and single, from a girl gone wild,to some ones mommy, heavy with child.

Jody cried at night in her bed alone,

packed her things to head back home.While she packed, guess what she found?That crown she won when the fair came round.That one she wore that night to the ball,the one that never changed her life at all.

She had hoped she’d come home covered with fame,instead she arrived drenched in shame.She went to work at a local dime storeand knew people called her a Hollywood whore.

At night, she’s the queen of the South Side Beauty Shopshe works two jobs ‘til she’s about to drop.She’s got a kid, and rent that’s dueand it’s hard to see her dreams coming true.

I mean, could you??(But Jody’s story is far from through.)

Battered and bruised, her story is captured in the song Jody Thinks, David’s folk rock song, (written after Billy tells him of her plight, later in New York) is all about non-belief. Betrayed and burned by false promises, Jody is driven to the bottom, like the queen of diamonds, she has no hope left. Jody doesn’t believe in anything, or anyone, anymore. Jody thinks the world is flat. She’s seen love come, but it never came back. Fallen from fame to shame, Jody’s gone back home, pregnant and alone. She works two jobs and can’t face her friends.

Now once all her dreams had come true she made it into that modeling school Jody dropped a tear, and then she runs away, no more words left to say.

Meanwhile, in the Big Apple, David is making money and missing Jody. Her absence has made his music grow softer and harder. Tears in My Eyes, became a regional hit. Farewell, rose to number 36 east of the Mississippi and Why I do? (a song that asks what’s the use, I know she doesn’t love me, so why do I even bother, then answers its own question) reaches number 22 on the billboard charts. It seems as though David is less important then ever to Jody, and yet, in spite of his common sense, he keeps on loving her. This ballad reveals the reason why.

David’s next single, I Wonder What, debuted at number 18 with a bullet. (Curiosity killed the cat and drove David’s doubts.) David is in New York City now while Jody is on the other side of the country. He thinks of her often and this song is about the fear, mixed with hope, that wanders nightly through his tortured mind.

Slowly business and time get in the way of his obsession with Jody and culminate in the release of Tonight I Let Her Go, David’s heart sung tribute to moving on past love’s old memories. One hot August night in New York, David finally surrenders to what his heart has known all along, that it’s time to say goodbye to the dream of Jody.Time to let her go, out of his life, even though she’ll never know. David’s first album was entitled, Every beat of My Heart, and featured this title tune. It topped the charts and David was flying

high as Jody was busy busing home. This is the trial acoustic version, recorded roughly, the first time it was ever sung.

It’s been almost two years since David first met Jody and it seems there is nothing left between them but the ghostly whispers of lost love. Still, he can’t stop loving her and wishes there was a second chance for romance. He remembers the day she left for L.A. and he knew he might never see her again. Some things are hard to forget and linger on. Love is one of the hardest.

COD, (which once meant to ship something, cash on delivery,) followed fast on the coattails of Every Beat of MY Heart and gave David two of the top five songs in America. In COD, David, plagued, like many artists before him with self doubt, reviews the choices he has made chasing his dreams. Was it all worthwhile?

Billy had flown up to play sax on the studio session of David’s newest release COD. which David penned after only two months without Jody in New York. It was during this session that David learns of the hard times that have fallen on Jody, pregnancy and all. (It was then that David penned Jody Thinks.) Having heard of Jody’s hard fall from grace, David has an epiphany moment and realizes that he has never stopped loving Jody in his heart and that he must go and help the one he loves, anyway he can, right now. He charters a flight and returns home to see her again, his old, young lover, and friend in need. David writes the rocker Ride like the Wind on his way back to Jody. On the planes TV, a Roy Rogers western movie is playing, and David pictures himself as a cowboy troubadour, riding back to his beloved cowgirl. This song rocks with the same high energy David is filled with about seeing Jody once again.

David arrives, unannounced, in a limo, at the house Jody rents outside of town. Jody has no idea who’d be coming to her house in a limo. Maybe she’s won the Publishers Clearing House Prize?No, it’s better than that, it’s David. They say love is better the second time around, and it certainly was for them. Reunited with Jody, David is at her side when she gives birth to her baby. On their first night at home, David sits up all night to calm the child. Never has love been this powerful as when he holds the baby’s tiny hand, and three nights later he writes his biggest hit to date, I’m Here To Make Everything Alright. A truer song was never penned.

Jody is swept off her feet by David, the singing cowboy, who rode in like the wind, to become her knight in shining armor. Love to the rescue. It’s Christmas, one year later, and David and Jody’s firstAnniversary.
