Paragraph C: Topic Sentence _______

39
3. THE CONCLUDING SENTENCE
Every paragraph needs a topic sentence. It also needs a concluding sentence.
So a paragraph looks like this:
/40
The concluding sentence has the same idea in it as the topic sentence, and usually adds something extra. The reader then knows that the paragraph is finished.
ORGANISATION IN A PARAGRAPH
There are several ways to organize sentences in a paragraph. Two of of the most common ways we learn about in Level 1 are time order and space order.
Time orderWhen you tell a story you organize events in the story by time. You tell what happened first, at the beginning of the story. Then you say what came next. In writing, we often do the same thing. We organize events in chronological (time) order.
? TASK 6:
Look at what is happening in the pictures below. Decide the order in which these events happen. Number them in the right sequence. The first and last pictures have been numbered for you.
//
41
/
///
/
/
//
//
? TASK 7:
When you write a paragraph, you will often have to organize events according to time. Read the model paragraph below and answer the questions.
/
.
42
What is he topic sentence? Underline it. How are the supporting sentences organized? What is the concluding sentence? Highlight it.
Using signal words
In order to show time relationships, you will need to use signal words to guide your reader from one idea to the next idea. These signal words can be used in a time order paragraph when we write about routines.
/
43
Using prepositions of time
It is important to use correct prepositions of time to show time relationships. Note how we use different prepositions to talk about specific and no-specific times as well as days and dates.
/
When we write about routines we need to use time expressions correctly. Look at the table below. Notice how we describe what happens in the 7:00-8:00 time slot.
44
?
TASK 7:
The following table shows Hessa’s weekday schedule. Write a report about Hessa’s day. Write the body paragraph for Hessa’s routine.

? TASK 8:
We also use time order expressions to structure our paragraphs when we write about events.
Read the topic sentence. Then read the sentences below it. Together they tell a story. The sentences are not in the correct order. Number them so they follow a logical time order. Put a 1 in front of the sentence that should come first, and so on.
A. John saved his money and spent a week in the UAE.
__________ First he left his bags in his room then he took a taxi to Dubai
Mall and explored the shopping centre.
____1_____ After he landed in Dubai, he went straight to the hotel and
booked in to a room with a sea view.
__________He decided he would visit the UAE again.
__________ After dinner he went back to his hotel because he was still tired
from the long flight and he knew there was still a lot to see.
__________ Three days later, he caught the bus to Abu Dhabi and had a
wonderful time there.
__________ He had an early meal in a restaurant overlooking the Dubai
Fountain so he was able to see the light and music show as the fountains danced.
[Note: We use the past tens when we write about timelines and events in the past.]48
Space Order
When you describe a place, you use space order to explain where things are located. The easiest way to do this is to choose a starting point. Then you can describe things in relation to your starting point.
Using signal words
The signal words in space order paragraphs are often prepositions of place. Look at the list below
