Fact sheet
Effect on India
10,749 casualties were confirmed dead, most of them in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. There are also 5,640 people missing, nearly all of them on the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Effect on Indonesia
Indonesia's Ministry of Health confirmed 131,028 deaths, mainly in the northern province Aceh of the island Sumatra. Some 37,000 people are missing.
Effect on Malaysia
Despite its proximity to the incident, Malaysia escaped the kind of damage that struck countries thousands of miles further away (most of its western coast is shielded by Sumatra). The number of deaths stands at 68 with 5 people missing.
Effect on the Maldives
In the Maldives, 82 were killed and 26 reported missing and presumed dead.
Effect on Myanmar
The official death toll is 61.
Effect on Somalia
176 people were confirmed dead, 136 were missing.
Effect on Sri Lanka
Sri Lankan authorities report 31,229 confirmed deaths, and 4,093 people missing.
Effect on Thailand
The Thai government reports 5,395 confirmed deaths and 2,817 missing.

Use books, your mathematical knowledge and the internet to research the answers to the following questions:
Question
Answer
How far away from where you live was the centre of the Indian Ocean tsunami in km?
The Japanese coast where the tsunami struck is approximately 9,500km from London. What would that distance be in metres?
What would that distance be in cm?
What would that distance be in miles?
Can you round this number to the nearest 1000, 100 & 10?
If you travelled in a plane at 550mph how many days, hours, minutes would it take to get the scene of the Japanese Tsunami?
If you travelled in a car at 70mph how many days, hours, minutes would it take to get the scene of the Japanese Tsunami?
If you travelled on a bicycle at 15mph how many days, hours, minutes would it take to get the scene of the Japanese Tsunami?
If you walked at 3mph how many days, hours, minutes would it take to get to the scene of the Japanese Tsunami?
A tsunami can travel at 700 km per hour. What would that speed be in metres per second?
Can you convert that into miles per hour?
The distance from Great Britain's northernmost point in Dunnet Head, Scotland, to Lizard Point, its southernmost point in England, is 600 miles as the crow flies. How long would it take a tsunami to do that journey?
It is an 823-mile drive along the most direct roads. How much EXTRA time would this take a tsunami?
The length of Great Britain's coastline is 7,700 miles. How long would it take a tsunami to travel that distance?
The Indian Ocean tsunami waves were up to 39m tall. How many cm is that?
How many mm is that?
Can you give an example of a building which is similar in height?

Water
It is estimated that every person needs about 2 litres of water per day.
Food
In the regions affected by the Indonesian Tsunami rice is a staple part of the diet. The World Food Programme provides, on average, about 400 grams of rice per person, per day (for families, including children and adults). That is intended for two meals that include other ingredients to ensure a minimum of 2,100 kilocalories per day.
Shelter
Large simple ridge tents are often used for shelter and vary in size. The number of people who would sleep overnight in one can also vary due to the size of families. However, the average number of people per tent for our work we will assume to be 8.
Task: Use the information above to calculate each of the missing boxes in the table below:

Water
For the purposes of this project, we are going to assume every litre of water costs 37 pence to get to the people who need it.
Food
For the purposes of this project, we are going to assume every metric tonne of rice costs £130.00 to get to the people who need it.
Shelter
For the purposes of this project we are going to assume every tent costs £45.00 to get to the people who need it.
Task: use the table you have already filled in, and the information about the cost of each necessity above to fill in the table below:
