1. The Will to Live

From this picture, we can see that a pairs of hands grasp a stone. The pairs of hands are dirty, but they grasp the stone tightly and strongly. The muscle appears obviously. We can imagine that the person don’t want to give up his life. He wants to catch hold of final hope. Once he loosens his hands, he will drop into the abyss. In life of Pi, Pi struggles to survive. His boat sinks, and he stays at a lifeboat with a tiger and other cruel animals. He worries about eating by animals. He also faces an awful condition that he lacks of water and foods. But he is eager to live. He searches foods and water from lifeboat. And he wants to tame the tiger. Just like the pairs of hands catch hold of the last hope.

2. Religious belief

From this picture, we can see a young boy is rounded by a kind of religions. He is ignorant and curious. He feels curious about these religions. Just like Pi, when he was born, he touched Hinduism. He feels strange about it, but he accepted it. Religious belief is an important in Life of Pi. Life of Pi begins with an old man in Pondicherry who tells the

narrator, “I have a story that will make you believe in God.” There are three main religions such as Hinduism, Islam and Christianity. Pi believes in all of them. He is through god’s eyes to understand the world.

3. Storytelling

Life of Pi is a story. The novel is framed by a note from the author, Yann Martel, who hears a fantastic tale from Piscine Molitor Patel. Then, according to a note and Pi’s description, he writes this book. This picture is a book. We can see many papers like a bird which fly out. And light is around the book. It means that a piece of paper is a small story. The author organizes these stories and add him self’s emotion and imagination to make the stories become a wonderful book.

4. Animals

From this picture, we can see many animals such as zebras, lions, elegant, and birds. They look like friendly. In Life of Pi, there are also many animals. Pi’s father runs a zoo in Pondicherry. And Pi lives with animals. Pi and animals get along with each other. These animals live in zoo, and they lead a peace life and are satisfied with this situation.

5. Fear

From this picture, we see that a puppet is escaping. In his back, a big hand wants to catch him. The big hand is fear. In Life of Pi, Pi talks about fear. He says: “it is life’s only true opponent. Only fear can defeat life.” Pi fears that he is eaten by tiger, and lives without foods and water. He doesn’t be controlled by fear. And he doesn’t to lose hope and faith. So he must be far away from fear. He doesn’t be caught by the big hand. He needs to run to escape the big hand.

6. Family

From this picture, we can see father and mother make a heart by fingers. And baby feet are rounded by the heart. This is a warm and happy family. In Life of Pi, Pi lives with their family. His father owns a zoo and he is a new India. Mother accepts Hindu and Baptist education. Pi and his brother go to school and play with animals. They lead a happy life. Their family likes the picture, full with love.

7. The Definition of Freedom

According to this picture, a fish jumps into a fish bowl from a fish bowl. The fish is freer, because there is a bigger room for it. In Life of Pi, people think zoo is cruel for animals and zoo restricts animals’ freedom. Animals stay in a cage. Those people think wild animals are free and happy. However, Pi thinks the definition of freedom is wrong. Wild animals are not free, and they are restricted by foods and safety. It likes escaping a cage to go into anther cage. And it likes the fish that jumps into a fish bowl from a fish bowl.

8. Man vs. nature PI vest ocean

From this picture, we can see two hands proceed with a game called wrist wrestling. A hand with leaves represents nature. Another hand represents human. In the book, the natural hand is ocean, another hand is Pi. They have a battle. Pi doesn’t be swallowed by ocean. He doesn’t be killed by sharks. Ocean is powerful. It can kill Pi. Pi wants to live, so he fights with the ocean. It likes wrist wrestling, and each people doesn’t his hand be overwhelmed.

9. Man vs. animal A lesson

From this picture, we can see a face. The left face is human’s face, and the right face is dog’s face. They merge together. It seems that animals get along with human well. Pi’s father teaches Pi and his brother a lesson how tigers are dangerous. He wants Pi and his brother to understand that although animals are friendly sometimes, people can’t forget their nature. This is a face with half of animals and half of animals. It looks weird. Because animals are animals, and human are human. They are different.

10. Science vs. religion Mr. Kumar

In this picture, we can see some things. The earth, a science book and a bottle of chemical agent. This is science. A bible, a cross, and a bird. This is religion. In Life of Pi, Mr. Kumar who is a biology teacher is an atheist. He doesn’t believe in God, because when he is young and gets polio, medicine save his life rather than God. He represents science. But Pi can’t understand Mr. Kumar, he believes in God. He represents religion.

11. Religion vs. Religion

From this picture, there are two people. In yellow people’s mind, there is one religion. In pink people’s mind, there are many religions. They face to face. In Life of Pi, an imam, a pandit, and a priest search Pi to want to Pi believe in one of them. They argue with each other. They are the yellow people. But Pi believes in three religions and he doesn’t want to choose one. He is the pink people. The three people think people only believe in one God. More than one God is bad. But Pi thinks that he just want to believe in God, and religions are equal.

12. Animals vs. Animals

This is a food chain. From this picture, we can see big fish eat small fish, and small fish eat smaller fish. The biggest fish is the top one in food chain. In Life of Pi, Chard Parker is the top one in animals who are in boat. He is the biggest fish. Chard Parker eats hyena, and hyena eats a zebra and Orange Juice. Hyena is afraid of Chard Parker, because he is weak. He is small fish. The zebra and Orange Juice are weakest and they are smaller fish.
