Criteria One – Positioning + narrowing the angles + anticipating.

Criteria Two – Catching the ball at various heights.

Criteria Three – Blocking.

Criteria Four – Avoiding rebounds + keeping/holding possession of the ball.

Students must complete a 4 v 3 game situation in favour off the attackers. You may place obstacles to represent other defenders. Students must use this chance to show tactical awareness and where on the court they should be moving in regard with their position.

Video 11 This video shows how students must move up and down the court in regard to

their position. To ensure students understand that they move up and down the court in a

line I have used cones and markers to mark out channels that the students are expected to run down.

It is expected that when around the 9m line students should overlap channels with the students next to them to outwit the opponent. However, it should usually be the person next to them, not two positions away.

Video 12 This video shows how students must move up and down the court in regard to

their position. It is expected that when around the 9m line students should overlap channels

with the students next to them to outwit the opponent. However, it should usually be the person next to them, not two positions away.

Students must be encouraged to dribble the ball less and move the ball via quick shoulder passes. Try to ensure the students do not loop pass and pass directly to the person next to them, the situations will be more fluent and the standard of handball will progress.

Video 13 Goalkeeper assessment criteria one, two, three and four.

Criteria One – Positioning + narrowing the angles + anticipating.

Criteria Two – Catching the ball at various heights.

Criteria Three – Blocking.

Criteria Four – Avoiding rebounds.

Drill One – The goalkeeper must face shoulder shots at different heights. Ask the student to stand at the 7m line. Add something to block the keepers view to narrow their angles.

Drill Two – The goalkeeper must face 6m Jump Shots at various heights and angles. Use something to block the keepers view to increase difficulty. Perform this shot at an angle this can ensure the goalkeeper shows the ability to anticipate the shot trajectory.

Drill Three – Similar to drill one, ask the keeper to stand behind a screen and call out the side the shoulder shot will be performed from. Add a pole for the keeper to move around while saving the shot.

Drill Four – Similar to drill one however add targets to for the outfield player to aim for. This should stretch the goalkeepers ability to block, kill and save the ball at different heights.

Drill Five – The goalkeeper needs to show an ability to catch the ball at various heights. This can be completed through drill five. Set up various obstacles around within the 6m zone. Two students take it in turns to throw the ball in the middle of zone for the keeper to catch.

Drill Six – The goalkeeper will face the other way, on a command word, ask the keeper to turn, face the outfield player and try to save the shoulder shot. You can differentiate this like all other goalkeeper drills by the power or speed of shot.

Goalkeeping BasicsWing Shots 1) Create an angle, forcing the winger

to jump wide.2) Take on step towards the attacker,

giving the player in attack as limited sight of the goal as possible.

3) Make yourself as large as possible; however be sure to watch for the lob shot.

High Shots 1) Block with one arm or hand.2) Try to ‘kill’ the ball dead.3) ‘Killing’ the ball increases the

chance of executing a counter attack immediately.

Low Shots 1) Simultaneously bring the arm down and the knee up to save the shot.

Positions On The CourtGoal Keeper 1) The first player in attack and last

player in defence, the goalkeeper has a role in everything the team does.

2) The goalkeeper defends the goal with every part of their body.

3) The goalkeeper can leave the 6m area if they do not have possession of the ball.

Right/Left Half 1) These players are physically bigger than the wingers.

@MrWebb_PE

@MrWebb_PE

2) In defence, they are strong and physical and create a wall to stop the opposition from scoring.

3) In attack, the halfbacks are dangerous with their height, power and ability to shoot from distance.

Centre Back 1) This player is the brain and creator of the team.

2) The centre back starts the attacks.3) They control the movement of the

team and assist the halfbacks’ and wingers’ on their attacking runs.

Right/Left Wing 1) These players are fast, agile and fit.

2) These players consistently run up and down the wing.

3) They are the first players in attack and the first players to return to defence.

4) They have a high skill ability to jump with height and with balance.

Pivot 1) This player’s main role is to sit within the defence in the centre alongside the centre back.

2) They are also expected to disrupt the defensive formation on the 6m line during attacks.

Phases Of The Game1st Attack Fast break – quick transition from

defence to attack.1st Defence The organised defence – attack

becomes defence, defenders reform around the D, to best halt the attack.

2nd Attack Extended break – Transition from defence to attack involving more than two players.

3rd Attack Second wave of attack – the organised team in attack against the team defending, (ball circulation, shooting, feinting).

2nd Defence Second form of defence – Hold positions, block opposition players from shooting or moving.

4th Attack Third wave of attack – attacking team must get a shot away or fear being penalised for wasting time.

Basic ConceptsThe Playing

CourtThe court measures 20 meters by 40 meters. The court is larger than a basketball court, but the length may be shortened when space is limited. The goal area line, or 6-meter line, is the most important line. No one except the goalie is allowed to stand in the goal area. The goal opening is 2 meters by 3 meters. Players may jump into the area if the ball is released before landing in the area.

The Ball Team handball is played with a 32-panel leather ball. For women, the ball is 54 to 56 centimetres and 325 to 400 grams. For men, it is 58 to 60 centimetres and 425 to 475 grams.

Number Of Players

There are seven players on each team. A maximum of 12 players may dress and participate in a game for each team. Substitutes may enter the game at any time through own substitution area as long as the player they are replacing has left the court.

Uniform Of The Players

Player numbers are 1 to 20. Uniform shirts and shorts are the same colour. The goalkeeper must wear a different colour shirt from teammates and opponents. No jewellery is allowed.

Referees There are two referees, a court referee and a goal line referee. Referees have complete authority: Their decisions

@MrWebb_PE

are final. The referees are assisted by a timer and a scorer.

Duration Of The Game

For players 18 years and over, the game consists of 2, 30-minute halves with 10-minute half-time. For tournament and youth games 2, 15-minute or 2, 20- minute halves. This is running time except for injury or one team time-out per half. The teams change benches at half-time. The game ends in a tie unless the game demands a winner. (Tournament rules dictate that a winner must be determined.) Overtime consists of 2, 5-minute periods).

Passive Play It is illegal to keep the ball in a team's possession without making a recognizable attempt to attack and to try to score. In other words, a team cannot stall (free-throw awarded to the other team).

1 2 3 4 5 6 7A legal goal has been scored.

Yellow card (warning). One per player and a maximum of three per team.

Red card (disqualification). The player is suspended for the rest of the match, the team continues in numerical inferiority for 2 minutes.

Suspension - The team continues in numerical inferiority for 2 minutes.

Forewarning signal – The attacking team executes passive play, they therefore risk losing possession.

Foul committed by the attacker - Resulting in losing possession of the ball.

Traveling – The player has exceeding their three-step allowance when in possession of the ball.

Throw In ExplanationFree Throw. These are awarded for slight infringements of the rules. All

defenders are required to stay 3 meters away from the person taking the free-throw.

Penalty Throw.

These are awarded when denying a clear scoring opportunity with an infringement.

Corner Throw. A corner is taken by the attacking side when the defender has knocked the ball over the goal line (other than the goalkeeper). The player puts one foot on the corner and passes the ball in.

Goal Throw. This occurs when the ball comes off the goalkeeper and crosses the goal line. The goalkeeper then takes the throw from within their own area.

Side Throw. These are awarded after the ball has crossed a side-line, it is take by the side who did not touch it last, with the player
