Mrs Travis – Zebras and crocodiles Dear Parent/Carers We know that home learning can be tricky and we’ve tried our best to make home learning as easy and as fun as we possibly can while still teaching your child new things. We would like to thank you for you and your child’s hard work with home learning. It would be great if every week day you could try to do a literacy and maths activity while at some time in the week completing a science and a curriculum task. However, we also appreciate there are so many other ways children can learn so feel free to be as creative as you can in other activities. It would also be great if your child could take part in a physical and a phonics activity too. Below is a list of links to support home learning. The Ginger bread manOnce upon a time there was a Little Old Lady who baked a Gingerbread man. When the Gingerbread man was cooked he jumped up and ran out of the kitchen. The old lady shouted “stop, stop little Gingerbread man!” The Gingerbread man replied “run, run as fast as you can, you can’t catch me I’m the gingerbread man.” The Little Old Lady chased the Gingerbread man down the lane until he came to a cow. “Stop, Stop little Gingerbread man” mooed the cow, but the Gingerbread man shouted, “run, run as fast as you can you can’t catch me I’m the gingerbread man!” The Little Old Lady and the cow chased the gingerbread man down the lane until he came to a goat. “Stop, stop little Gingerbread man” bleated the goat, but the Gingerbread man shouted “run, run as fast as you can you can’t catch me I’m the Gingerbread man!” The Little Old Lady, the cow and the goat chased the gingerbread man down the lane until he came to a river. At the river he meets a fox. “Quick, quick, jump onto my tail little Gingerbread man!” shouts the fox, so, the Gingerbread man jumped onto the foxes tail and the fox began to swim across the river. “It’s getting a bit wet on the tail!” cried the gingerbread man. “Quick, quick jump onto my back” said the fox, so, the Gingerbread man jumped onto the foxes back and the fox continued to swim across the river. “It’s getting a bit wet on here!” cried the gingerbread man. “Quick, quick jump onto my ears” shouted the fox so the Gingerbread man jumped onto the foxes’ ears and the fox continues to swim across the river. “It’s getting a bit wet up here!” cried the Gingerbread man. “Quick, quick jump onto my nose” shouted the fox so the Gingerbread man jumped onto the foxes’ nose and the fox went SNAP! He ate the gingerbread man up in one big gulp. The end.

Read this story with an adult if it helps you. As you read your adult could ask these questions, can you answer them?

- Who are the characters in the story?- Who is the Gingerbread man running away from?- Why do you think the Gingerbread man is running away?- Do you think the fox is helping the Gingerbread man?- Did you like the story? What was your favourite part?

Why?

At school we learn stories by adding actions, this helps us to remember and retell the story. As you read the story ask can you come up with actions. Try to read the story every day to get better at retelling the story. You could share your retelling of the story on twitter.

Story Map and labelsLook at Mrs Travis’s story map above. Can you make your own story map to help you retell the story? Remember you only need pictures for the important parts. As an extra challenge you could add labels to your story map like I have done.
