Course Objectives:

2

1. Assess how and when to apply new communication technologies.

2. Create projects using the digital communication tools appropriate for the context

3. Develop a personal professional profile

4. Demonstrate an understanding of how new communication technologies are used in today’s workplace

Course Overview:Workers communicate and collaborate with instant messaging, blogs, wikis, Twitter, Linked-In, and Facebook. Businesses communicate with the public via CEO blogs, viral marketing, and other forms of communication driven by social media. These new technologies and social trends are explored with a view towards our existing understanding of capturing, transferring, sharing, and managing knowledge in a business setting. In addition to learning the ways businesses use social networking tool, it is important that today’s workers understand how to create and market “Brand Me.”

The course is multi-disciplinary meaning that students of all majors will find something exciting to study even if information technology isn't your area of expertise.

REQUIREMENTS AND GRADING:

Unless otherwise noted, all homework assignments should be typed and double-spaced. Left and right margins should be no larger than 1.25.” Additionally, use either Arial or Times NewRoman 12 pt. font. I will not accept handwritten homework assignments. If you do not have a computer at home, please use one in the school’s library or computer lab.

1. Attendance is mandatory. This course relies on your in-class participation. Repeated absences will lower your grade. If you miss more than four classes over the course of the quarter, you may not receive credit for the class. Arriving significantly late for class may count as an absence.

In the event that you do miss a class, it is your responsibility to find out, either by contacting the instructor or by contacting a classmate, what was covered in that class. The best way to reach me is via email at [email protected] so documentation of your absence is recorded.

2. In-class writing assignments. We will have frequent short writing assignments and discussions that will focus on the required readings.

3. If you submit an assignment late, your grade will be lowered for that paper. I will take off 5 points for every day the project is late. Thus, projects submitted a week or more after the due date will NOT receive a passing score. LATE FINAL PROJECTS WILL NOT BEACCEPTED.

4. Technology Use. Use of the computers is for course-related material only. If you are posting on your personal FB account or tweeting, you will be asked to complete an

additional assignment. On the second offense, you will be asked to leave class for the day. Same policy for texting. PLEASE EXERCISE A LEVEL OF PROFESSINALISM INTHE CLASS.

5. PLAGIARISM: All written work you turn in should be your own, except for the quotations from texts, which you will use as evidence for your analysis. (All words taken directly from texts should appear inside quotation marks and be followed by a parenthetical citation.) We will discuss plagiarism and citation further in class to clarify this. If you plagiarize once in this class, the assignment on which you do so will receive a grade of F. If you plagiarize a second time, YOU WILL FAIL THE CLASS.

6. Grading of all projects will follow the guidelines as listed in the “Evaluation of Your Writing” rubrics distributed for the specific writing assignment.

7. Class participation. Each class will begin with a lecture that will provide an overview of readings assigned for the class. The lecture will be followed by class discussion. Each student will be expected to participate in discussing each week’s readings. Therefore reading assignments should be completed by the date scheduled on the class calendar. University guidelines expect that students will spend about 1.5-2.0 hours preparation for every 1 hour of class time; for our course this means 4.5-6.0 hours preparation per week.

8. EWU Administrative Withdrawal Policy1.When a student has reached (1) week of consecutive UNEXCUSED absences for a course (3x for MWF, 2x for MW or TuTH and prior to the end of the 7th week of class) the instructor will attempt to outreach to the student (via email, phone, etc.) to ascertain the nature of the absences.

2. When a student has reached (2) weeks of consecutive UNEXCUSED absences for a course (6x for MWF, 4x for MW or TuTH and prior to the end of the 7th week of class) and the student has not contacted the instructor regarding the absence, the instructor will administratively withdraw the student from the class without delay.

3. Once a student has been administratively withdrawn from the class, the student may request reinstatement. Students must request reinstatement in writing and must provide written, verifiable documentation for the absences in order for a reinstatement to be considered. The decision to reinstate a student to class rests solely with the instructor of that class.

4. Nothing in this policy shall restrict an instructor from utilizing whatever resources he/she deems appropriate to assist a student with absences arising from a legitimate cause (illness, family emergency, etc.).
