Changnoi Somtam(Isaan Thai Food)

• About us

Changnoi is located at Sukhumvit 31 (Asok) which is the town center of Bangkok. Therefore,

most of our clients are office workers and foreigners. Our restaurant serves Isaan (Northeast) Thai

food, so the menu includes the full Isan food repertoire. The signature dish of Changnoi is Kai Ob-

Ong (roast chicken in an earthen water jar). We also have a variety of dishes of Isaan Thai food for

you to select.

• What is Isaan Thai Food?

Isaan is one of Thailand’s four regions

which is located in the Northeast of Thailand. It

is surrounded by Laos to the North and East,

and Cambodia to the South. Therefore, Isaan

Thai food could be influenced from the

neighboring countries. It is renowned for its

pungent sauces, spicy chilies, and unusual

proteins. Issan has developed a multitude of

outstanding dishes that have become famous

throughout the world.

For Example, Thai Papaya Salad, also

known as Som Tam, it originated from Isaan

and it is now one of the most sought after Thai

dishes. Most Isaan dishes are served with sticky

rice and are characterized by fiery chilies,

strong fish sauces, sour bites, and flavorful

sauce mixtures.

• Our history

Changnoi Somtam’s founders,

Mr.Sunthorn and Mrs.Kumaree Sawangwong,

moved to Bangkok and started to learn how to

cook Isaan food in the 1990s as young

apprentices of their cousin’s Isaan restaurant.

After learning for a while, they decided to open

their own first portable food stall in Sukhumvit

23. Unfortunately, they had to move around in

the area due to the economic recession at that

time. They, however, didn’t give up on their

fate. Because of the difficulty they were facing,

they wanted to have their own restaurant. They

worked harder until they could buy a shop

house in Sukhumvit 23. Finally, Changnoi was

founded in 1994 and it has been a popular

restaurant in this area since then onwards.

• Message from the founders

“After working hard for many years, we

decided to open Isaan Thai food restaurant in

the one of the centers of commercial areas in

Bangkok. At first, we would like to present

Thai food in the original Isaan style to

foreigners and to people around the area. After

opening for a while, our restaurant was getting

more and more popular, so we need to pay

more attention to our customers’ needs in order

to maintain our restaurant’s standard.”

• The Menu

Maing Pla Pao – It is Tilapia fish that stuffed with crushed lemongrass stalks, coated in a thick layer of salt, and roasted over low coals on the grill. It is served with Kanom Jean (rice noodles), vegetables, and green chili sauce.

Roasted beef – This one is special at Changnoi. The beef is topped with ginger, lemongrass and our secret recipes and it is roasted on a stove to create a unique smell of our dish.

Jim-Joom - It is similar to shabu-shabu but with a Thai twist. The unique soup is enriched with the full flavors and fragrance of Thai herbs. It is served with meats and vegetables,

including dipping sauce. (The Most popular dish among Japanese customers)

Som tam + Kai kem –It is comprised of shredded green papaya, green long beans, tomatoes, peanuts, lime juice, dried shrimps, garlic, chili peppers, fish sauce and palm sugar. (spicy papaya salad with salty egg)

Kai ob ong – Roast chicken is served in the big terracotta jar with flavorful dipping sauce. It is Changnoi’s signature dish.

• Atmosphere

At Changnoi, you will receive a very warm welcome. Our restaurant can contain the maximum of 70 our customers; the indoor seats are available for 20 people and outdoors for 50 people. It is a medium dining room with warmlight and original Issan music playing along in the indoor. It is suitable for a meeting a couple of people, and a family with children. Outside’s air will give you a feeling of chilling out and relaxing. Having a conversation in fresh air would make it more enjoyable.

Changnoi Somtam is also available for a large group of people. You can hold some celebrations in a warm atmosphere at Changnoi.

Changnoi Somtam is located at Sukhumvit 33. Our restaurant is surrounded by many distinguished places, such as Terminal 21, Robinson Asok, and EveandBoy. You can reach us by using personal cars or public transportations.
