Use Safe Working Practices 11.1.1 -

The Unit 11 Vehicle Inspections looks at the different types of routine maintenance procedures and the carrying out of each to specification. The unit also incorporates the reasons for using Industry documentation, reasons for completing this documentation and keeping service records up to date.

As with any task in the Motor industry, basic workshop safety plays a very important part. The costs of not working safely can be very harsh and sometimes lead to a prison sentence being handed down by a judge in very severe circumstances.

Read the statements below and add what you think are the missing words.

· N________ run or smoke in the workshop

· Wear A______________ clothing

· Use the C__________ tools for the job

· D_________ carry sharp objects in your pockets

· U_____ tool safety guards

· B______________ of hot parts

· E_____________ all work is properly secured

· C_____________ work area and tools

· R________________ tools to tool box/Storage

Look at the lifting equipment shown and in your own words write down what checks you think maybe required before use!

Identify Key Periodic Inspections 11.2.1

Modern day light passenger vehicles require regular maintenance to ensure that they maintain good performance and condition. Oil and Filter changes are the most basic of services that must be carried out on a servicing schedule. Other items such as Air, Pollen & Fuel Filters along with other engine based components such as Spark plugs are required at different servicing schedules.

One of the first things that need’s to be carried out is to identify the location of the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number).

Below is a set of different locations as to where the VIN could be found.

Choose a vehicle and state where the VIN is found and the vehicle details.

Identify Key Periodic Inspections L.O 11.2.1, 11.2.2

Vehicle inspections are very important procedures that need to be carried out on either mileage based service / inspection schedule or time based service / inspection schedule. If a vehicle is used daily and travels a certain amount of miles every year then a Mileage based service schedule would be the best schedule to use.

Q1. What do you think the difference is between mileage and time based servicing?

A1.______________________________________________________________________________________________________

Q2. Sketch a picture of what the vehicle engine components might look like by not carrying out routine maintenance.

The inspection checks that are carried inside the vehicle are just as important as the ones that are carried out on the exterior of the vehicle. Visual and audible indication is given to the driver by means of an instrument cluster which helps to warn of potential problems and also provide important information. By looking at the picture below identify then label or list at least 5 different bits of information that could be seen by the driver?

The picture below shows a Car Headlamp and both of the beams that are given off from a Headlamp when it is operated. Label which of the Beam patterns you think is Dipped beam and which is Main Beam.

Vehicle retailers are required by law to carry out certain inspections and checks to make sure that when a vehicle is sold, whether it is New or old that it meets the required safety standards and is roadworthy. A PDI is a series of checks and inspections carried out on a new vehicle. A used car inspection is a series of safety checks and inspections carried out by a competent and qualified person on a used vehicle.

From the list below mark next to the descriptions whether they are PDI, UCI or Both.

PDI = Pre Delivery inspection or UCI = Used Car inspection.

· Remove all the plastic coverings before delivering to the customer

· Top up and check all the fluid levels

· Check the condition and pressure of all the tyres

· Measure the brake pads and discs

· Carry out MOT Checks

· Code the radio and set the stations before the customer takes delivery of the vehicle

· Fit the wiper blades ad remove plastic packaging

· Stamp the service book

· Obtain both sets of keys
