Would hope to get them by next year. $2000 is pretty much what’s left in projects, would cost $6000 total. Michelle: How are you going to test success rate? Ben: An alumn in the town wants to survey townspeople in meetings. Also reaching out to Williams staff and faculty. Would like to get it funded now and start to think about how to measure while waiting to ship. Web: In favor of funding, but what’s the liklihood of administration putting up extra $40,000? Ben: Very high -- college dedicated to safety. Hadn’t had support of the town but with new town manager it’s a good time. Latest to get money is probably early July. Luke: Couldn’t we just do $1000, why $2000? Ben: Most we could do and still leave projects in a good place for next year, but also want to do as much as we can because ⅓ seems significant enough it can’t be ignored.

Web: Got money back from ACE ($20,000) because of cancellation. If you have ideas let me know, otherwise will just be more generous in subgroup.

Ben: Want to contribute to a large cost for lighted crosswalk. Would get one unit of RFB. Getting funding from CC would show our dedication and would force administration to move forward with proposal. Would hope to get them by next year. $2000 is pretty much what’s left in projects, would cost $6000 total.

Michelle: How are you going to test success rate?

Ben: An alumn in the town wants to survey townspeople in meetings. Also reaching out to Williams staff and faculty. Would like to get it funded now and start to think about how to measure while waiting to ship.Web: In favor of funding, but what’s the liklihood of administration putting up extra $40,000?Ben: Very high -- college dedicated to safety. Hadn’t had support of the town but with new town manager it’s a good time. Latest to get money is probably early July. Luke: Couldn’t we just do $1000, why $2000? Motion to Approve Budget for $2000: Allegra Second: Arielle 19-1-2

III. Visit From Don KjellerenDon: Been at Middlebury for the past 17 years. Building a new career center. First 3-6 months, visiting different groups and figuring out needs here. Want to reimagine what the center could be. Met with older classes, trustees, alumni exec board. Creating list of core, must have elements.

1) Need to activate the Ephs network -- alumni. All about the network and the virtuous cycle.

2) Four year road map -- frosh will meet with students as soon as they get here. Get a roadmap of what your four years here might be like. Will make it low stressed.

3) Real world skill acquisition -- Winter Study courses on things like Excel, Stata, etc. Also how to articulate these skills. Need to be prepped to articulate your narrative. Going to ask recruiters where we are lacking.

4) Best of Class Analytics -- need peer to peer database to see who has done internships last summer

5) Senior survey -- six months out, all peers do it.6) Best practices -- find out what’s working/not working with top LACs. For example,

Pathways mentoring program which is not happening here. 7) Emerging technologies -- have $10,000 to invest (pymetrics, Koru, Interviewstream 8) Get a better sense of what our graduates actually do

Collecting information and creating short, medium and long term buckets.

Questions for you: 1) If we send an invitation to every freshman how many will come?

Michael: We have academic advisor system and that works. First experience is job fair and people aren’t really sure when to stop.

Allegra: Freshman think things during First Days is mandatory, but could also be a little overwhelming, might be helpful to wait.

Luke: Freshman are anxious to know what they should be doing -- would not be opposed.

Don: Anyone opposed to starting early?

Web: Something to be said about settling in without idea of education being purely career driven. Maybe advertising though.

Michelle: Potentially a compromise -- send invitation during First Days to sign up for it but have the actual date be later in the semester. First Days also packed.

Hanson: Get people signed up for Route 2 immediately but wait until Winter Study.

Josemaria: I went to the career center the first day I was on campus. But also might be good to wait for Winter Study.

2) How do we get “career” center out of our title? Does that word freak people out?Josemaria: Opportunity center.

Ben: There is trepidation about career. Life after Williams.

Haley: Would not be perceived well if is Opportunity Center

Michelle: Post-grad center?

Hank: Agree with Michelle.

Don: Most LACs use Career.

3) Heard critique that all the Center does is finance. What do we do about that? Finance is who actually comes to campus to recruit. What can we do?

Fatima: Certain pockets on campus have programs like Summer Theater Lab -- career center could help with that type of stuff. You can meet many alumni through that. Get lecturers involved.

Don: Would it make sense to do away with recruiting?

Fatima: No -- keep options open for people who want them but open them up for others.

Rodsy: Career center works a lot with pre-med but that’s about it. Tell you grad school is an option but what about after that? Currently academic advisors much more helpful.

Noah: Ease of process is part of why people go to finance. Doesn’t make sense for tech firms to come when we have 20 CS students. Career center could work directly with departments.

Don: How receptive are faculty to career stuff?Noah: Yeah I think they can be. Hanson: Athletics did young alumni panel on sports careers. Young alumni are super honest. Also Nick Fogel made Jigsaw. Linda: International students need help on networking in their countries. Don: Would international students go to a session? Linda: Yes Caitlin: Also difficult for international students with paperwork -- could help with that. Sophia: Students going into the military have very little support.

Page 4: ephblog.comephblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/CC-Minutes-…  · Web viewNed: Met with Bob Volpi. Now doesn’t think it will be possible to have swipes at Lees for lunch, but

Ava: More information on options/exploring possibilities as opposed to how to get to some place you already know. Career doesn’t make sense since so many people jump around -- don’t just go down one path. Josemaria: Development office is helpful. Need more help getting resources Michelle: Companies posting on Route 2 are in finance/those are the ones you’ve heard of. Noah: Wait times are too long right now. Academic advising is also weak. Need even within major work. Don: Yes, need to integrate. Hanson: Non-career things like budgeting, acclimating to the real world. Writing cover letters, etc -- student run workshop through career center? Don: We have least number of student workers which are front line for walk-ins.

4) How do we make this less stressful?Michael: Stress may come from insecurities about liberal arts. Coming in early might help.5) How do we make people want to interact with the career center. Fatima: Bring people to have a talk -- people go to lectures all the time. Rodsy: Homecoming is a good time have networking.

Michael: Want to propose something between You are Not Alone and Storytime in blog form. Want to collect advice and experiences to create sense of community. Would launch during First Days. Funding is for domain name and subscription. Hanson: Name?Rubel: Montgomery pioneered Choose Your Own Adventure. Motion to approve: Ben Seconded: Ned 20-0-2

IV. SOC Ava: Students with disabilities -- want to be general group to discuss life on campus with a disability. We voted unanimously to recommend approval of the club. Bum Shik: Marchee was the one who came in. Makes so much sense to have this club. Sophia: Like 4+ club, would work with administration and find extra support

Motion to Approve: Luke Second: Moises 22-0-0

IV. Jackie Lane Visit Discussion (Continued)Michelle: We’ll just be following up regarding Jackie’s visit and bylaw proposal from last week. She’s hoping that’ll have CC support in the fall and next year as she leaves campus. Who would be interested in pursuing this with me next year? (Rodsy, Ava, Fatima, Arielle, Bum Shik, Ben). I think performance groups have a definite impact on this campus, and working through them may be the best way to forward support through students rather than “at” them.

Page 5: ephblog.comephblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/CC-Minutes-…  · Web viewNed: Met with Bob Volpi. Now doesn’t think it will be possible to have swipes at Lees for lunch, but

Michael: Have to be careful of way we dictate the content of our group’s content. Maybe have a few shows targeted, but regulation of content concerns me. Michelle: Groups would come up with however they would regulate it. Fatima: Last year Jackie did ConsentFest -- interesting to start having conversations with groups creating art. Hank: Shouldn’t just go after performance groups. This needs to be taken care of in entire community. Ava: How feasible would it be to have a social chair or equivalent who had to go to bystander training?Michelle: Meg could do pointed sessions. Could group orgs though. Ned: Should have someone in every org have bystander training. Hanson: Difference between security’s bystander training and consent workshop. Bylaw might not make sense -- maybe resolution. Justinas: Is this a one time thing or are we going to follow up? Important to have follow up. Hank: Also something like bystander training for mental illness. Could be really productive for everyone on campus to understand how to be there and be supportive. Noah: Making groups change constitutions isn’t that impactful. It’s ridiculous that captains for sports teams don’t have to go through bystander training. Rodsy: We don’t have to train everyone -- a lot of groups already have people who are. Ben: What about just open sessions?Michelle: Used to do it but no one went Arielle: Convos need to be group focused. Groups should have autonomy over their content. Michelle: Save Bronfman is coming in a few. For now -- project updates.

V. Project UpdatesBum Shik: Stuck on legal phase for dogs. Who do we go to about contracts? Michelle: Maybe Steve Klass. Bum Shik: Want to try to get for finals. Luke: Had meeting with dining -- will be meeting with someone more in depth about tech. Michael: Nate Andersen just released his own dining app so we are collaborating with him. Josemaria: Have a call tomorrow with alumni running a green revolving fund. Justinas: Been talking to WSO about the app -- it’s complicated. Work is really slow. Matt LaRose said they are developing the app for Williams. Need to work to expedite. Ned: Met with Bob Volpi. Now doesn’t think it will be possible to have swipes at Lees for lunch, but can probably extend grab and go hours. Next semester will hopefully be open a few days a week. Wants us to do a survey on how to make grab and go better.

VI. Bylaws

Page 6: ephblog.comephblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/CC-Minutes-…  · Web viewNed: Met with Bob Volpi. Now doesn’t think it will be possible to have swipes at Lees for lunch, but

Web: Historically, question of whether or not we should pay students. Apparently this used to be a bylaw and it didn’t get put in document but will ignore that. Want to leave FinCom some leeway to feel out each situation. Allegra: Also, whether or not CC groups can sell products they use CC money for Hanson: Why not have these things approved separately? Web: Already go line by line. Let’s deal with this next week Michelle: Need to fix what happens with absences after you’ve repealed. Rodsy: Being late count as an absence? Michelle: Yes -- already in bylawsSophia: Seems excessive that tardy is absence. Michelle: It’s because we need quorum. Michael: Need to strike happy medium.Ned: Is there a process to replace?Allegra: Special election for officers Luke: Seems unfair in case of emergencies. Should look into anonymizing voting

VI. Save Bronfman Troy: Starting construction this summer. Been trying to make sure student input on design process. Been trying to increase transparency. Big problems we see: classrooms being moved to basement, library space is not as good, exterior. Hoping to have student meeting early in the fall. Want to get more people involved -- especially those here in the summer. Have a CC survey going out. Would love help from CC. Michelle: Interested in working with them?Rodsy, Moises, Caitlin, Josemaria, Hanson, Hank

VI. Open Time Allegra: Motion to approve Michelle’s bylaw Ben: Seconded 15-5-3 -- passes
