FIELD RESEARCH

Shipboard & Field Campaigns

Leadership and participation in international collaborative, large-budget expeditions (IODP = International Ocean Discovery Program; ICDP = International Continental Drilling Program)

2020 IODP Expedition 387 Amazon Margin, Atlantic Ocean. Postdoc Christoph Haggi selected to sail as shipboard scientist (2 months), proposal for post-expedition funding (PI Feakins). Scheduled drilling 4/2020-6/2020, delays due to necessary ship repairs in seasonal window of opportunity, COVID delays also impact the program, rescheduling expected 2022.

2019 ICDP Trans Amazon Drilling Proposal (TADP), Brazil (PI: Baker). Feakins member of the international science party i.e. supported the proposal process via participation in 2 drilling proposal planning workshops in 2015 and 2019, and carries obligations to staff drilling in Brazil, sampling in Michigan and complete post-drilling organic geochemistry research at USC. Drilling delayed from 1/2020 till 7/2020 due to Brazilian permitting process. Scheduled drilling 7/2020-2021, delays likely due to COVID.

2015 ICDP Full Proposal, co-PI, Tanzania Onshore Paleogene Integrated Coring (TOPIC), Tanzania (PI: Pearson, co-Is include Feakins), the proposal was funded by the ICDP, but the member nation matching funding has not yet been forthcoming (PI Pearson, UK).

2015 IODP Expedition 355 Indus Fan, Indian Ocean. PhD student Hannah Liddy sailed as shipboard scientist (2 months), post-expedition funding (PI Feakins).

2015 IODP Expedition 354 Bay of Bengal, Indian Ocean. Postdoc Camilo Ponton sailed as shipboard scientist (2 months), post-expedition funding (PI Feakins); associated NSF-funded research (PI Feakins, co-PI Galy).

2014 Plant sampling in the Andean tropical cloud forests and Western Amazonian lowland tropical rainforests of the Madre de Dios, Peru. Plant sampling from plots spanning a 3km elevation gradient with sampling campaign lasting 7 months and involving a large number of Peruvian participants. (field program PI Malhi; analytical chemistry, leaf wax work PI Feakins).

2013 NSF-funded seasonal sampling of rivers in the Madre de Dios, Peru, across a 4km elevation gradient, in dry and wet season, 2-3 weeks each, involving USC graduate students, postdocs and Peruvian participants (PIs West & Feakins: field program PI West, leaf wax work PI Feakins).

2006 IODP proposal 724-Full “Gulf of Aden Drilling: Constraining Paleoenvironmental Contexts of African Faunal Evolution”, top-ranked proposal, piracy concerns block scheduling (PI deMenocal, co-Is include Feakins).

LABORATORY

Consistent with the NAS recommendation that promotion cases consider a PI’s laboratory safety record: my attentiveness to laboratory permitting and safety and incident-free record are detailed here.

2019 Leadership in creating a culture of Chemicals Safety. As an active member of the University Research Committee in 2019/20, I helped shape the University's first comprehensive lab safety policy to meet standards set by the UC Regents Settlement of 2012 and the California Health and Safety Code 8 CCR 5191.

2019- USDA Permit Holder. Feakins is the holder of soil permits issued by the USDA for the import of soil, passing USDA inspection of USC facilities and protocols, and maintaining adherence. Feakins is the only USDA-permitted PI at USC.

2008- Feakins is PI, technician and lab manager, of an organic geochemistry and compound specific isotopic analytical laboratory. Feakins is the sole director of the laboratory (~1500 SQF) that includes organic geochemistry preparation space, including combustion oven, drying oven, vacuum line, distillation, organic-clean freeze drier, Accelerated Solvent Extraction system, three 6-ft fume hoods, bench space, cold storage, and racks of various high pressure gas cylinders; she maintains and operates Thermo GC-IRMS and Agilent GC-MS/FID analytical mass spectrometry instrumentation equipped to measure C and H isotopes in organic molecules and quantify their abundance. This is the only compound-specific isotopic laboratory facility at USC.

2008- Laboratory Safety Record: no incidents in 12 years of operation. Feakins is the PI responsible for chemicals safety for a laboratory group including postdoctoral, graduate and undergraduate researchers (currently 7 people). Feakins ensures adherence to all EHS guidance including leading annual site-specific trainings (2008-), documentation, storing and handling chemicals including flammable solvents, acute toxicants, cryogens, carcinogens and reproductive toxicants – all with appropriate SOP, managing hazardous waste storage and disposal. I work proactively with the EHS lab safety team to reach the highest standard of chemical lab safety and to teach and role model best practices to my students and visitors.

Laboratory experience prior to USC:2006-2008 Postdoc in a compound specific isotopic laboratory at the California

Institute of Technology. Laboratory chemistry, vacuum line cryogenic extractions, operating Thermo GC-IRMS and GC-MS and troubleshooting (Alex Sessions, PI).

2004-2006 Visiting graduate student researcher (6 months over 2 years) at a compound specific isotopic laboratory at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, preparative organic chemistry, GC-FID operation and GC-IRMS data interpretation (Timothy Eglinton, PI).

2001-2004 Graduate student researcher: foraminifera identification and picking, reductive/oxidative cleaning and Mg/Ca analyses by ICP and volcanic glass separations at LDEO, Columbia University. (Peter deMenocal, PI).

1999-2001 Undergraduate researcher, senior thesis project work, lab preparative work and OSL dating by Riso at the University of Oxford, School of Geography (Stephen Stokes, PI).

1999-2001 Sample preparation technician (hourly paid worker) for OSL, geological and archaeological samples at the University of Oxford, Research Laboratory for Archaeology and the History of Art (Edward Rhodes, PI).
