About Your Course…So you are now enrolled on to the Level 1 Animal Care course, but what does that actually mean?Over the next academic year you will work toward achieving a full level 1 diploma in animal care. In order for you to do this, you will have to complete the following -

Theory (classroom) lessons Practical lessons Work experience (60 hours) Assessments (NOT EXAMS)

What you will need ….As with school there are some items that you will need to bring with you to college –

Pens Note paper Folder (A4 lever arch) Lunch or money for lunch

Because all of our courses involve practical lessons you need to have the correct safety clothes. For animal care you will need –

Steel toe cap safety boots Navy blue overalls

Within the department there are lockers available for you to keep your bags and belonging during breaks and when not in use. We do ask that PPE (overalls etc.) are taken home regularly to be washed. If you are unable to get any of the equipment that you require you can loan or buy it from college, just let us know.

What if I change my mind …We understand that due to the corona virus outbreak you may not of had chance to come to college or meet the staff, but don’t worry we are here to help you and if you change your mind or want to move on to another course you can do this in the first 6 weeks of the course starting.

What you will Study …The course is made up of 7 different units, in order to complete the course you must complete each of the units and the assessment that goes with it. The units are – 201 - Safe and Effective Working Practices

202 – Preparing to Working in the Land Based Industries

216 – Assist with maintaining the health and wellbeing of animals

224 – Animals in the wild and their main features

225 – Uses and domestication of animals

228 – Assist with the handling and restraint of animals

229 – Assist with the exercise of animals

Let’s get started … Because September is a long way away, let’s make a start on some of the tasks you will have to complete during your first weeks at college.In the class room.Because college is not school our rules and what is expected may be different to what you are used to. So what is different?

Call your tutors by name No uniforms You will be treated as an adult, and we will expect

you to behave like one. It’s up to YOU to take notes. Self-study lessons, where you are responsible for

your own learning As part of the rules that are set out we ask student to come up with a set of rules for the class room and there groups. This is so that you are learning in an environment that you feel comfortable in.
