Objective 1: Discuss the need to practice good personal and community hygiene.
What is health? According to WHO( World Health Organization) ,health is a state of complete physical , mental and social well being, and not merely the absence of disease and infirmity.
Sanitation is the practice of maintaining good health and preventing disease by application of sanitary measures for the sake of cleanliness, protecting health, etc. the disposal of sewage and solid waste.

Good personal hygiene.
Personal hygiene refers to the practice of keeping oneself clean and well – groomed in order to promote good overall health and well being. It includes anything we do to stay healthy and prevent micoorganisms causing diseases. Maintaining personal hygiene is important because it helps to :
Eliminate body odours Promote social acceptance Prevent infections Ensure good health Prevent dental caries
Good personal hygiene practices include:
Regular washing of the body and the hair . Use of deodorizing sprays, gels, perfumes to eliminate odor. Keeping the genitalia and genital area clean . Regular flossing and brushing of the teeth Frequent changing and washing of clothes. Ensuring hands are washed regularly ,especially after using the toilet and
before preparing food. Ensuring nails are trimmed and clean.
Examples of diseases associated with poor hygenic conditions .
Diseases in Indigenous communities caused by germs and parasites resulting from inadequate domestic and personal hygiene
food poisoning.
gastroenteritis. diarrhoea caused by Campylobacter. pneumonia. trachoma. skin infections.
