Doctors Without Borders

Helping Haiti Through Hurricane

A devastating storm hit many of the island countries about a month ago and this storm’s name was Hurricane Matthew. One of the man countries in particular that Matthew left in shambles and destruction was Haiti. Haiti needs help from whoever can help them because the situation could potentially get worse every day, over time. It is important to spread awareness about this situation because with the lack of resources and flood water, there is a much higher risk for infectious diseases to spread throughout the entire country.

PLATFORM #1 (Twitter)

Hashtags.

Twitter is an extremely popular and probably the fastest growing way of social media nowadays. With twitter there are so many ways that people can stay in touch with what is going on in the world. With twitter hashtags such as, #HelpHaiti, many people around the world can see the cause and help to donate. When on twitter, one can just click on a hashtag and from there, can see all of the people around the world discussing and talking about that certain hashtag. This is an easy way to spread awareness about the destruction that Hurricane Matthew had on Haiti and what can be done in order to help. #HELPHAITI

Moments.

Moments is a new feature on twitter that talks about multiple, specific and important events going on around the world at that time. With moments, one can click on the moment’s section for Hurricane Matthew or for the destruction it has set and see what exactly is going on whether it is live or it has already happened. On each moment, one may swipe right to view the next tweet from that moment. As a company, if Doctors Without Borders tweets constantly about the help in Haiti then more and more

people will see through the moments feature on Twitter.

The main way to monitor this platform is by going on everyday and making sure that all the information is current and easy to access. By making sure that this info stays out and by making sure that someone from the organization posts a hashtag on the topic everyday, the hashtag and cause will stay alive. These tactics will work due to the amount of people that go on and access twitter every single day.

PLATFORM #2 (Youtube)

Messaging/ Tactic A.

A video of a popular news station that shows the horror that Hurricane Matthew left behind along with videos and pictures of the damages can be a great way to help spread awareness and cause of what is going on in Haiti. When people can a real life view of the damage, then they will see how serious of a situation it is and help the cause at hand. This video from the news can also discuss eye-opening statistics that happened due to the Hurricane.

Messaging/ Tactic B.

Another type of video that can be used from a youtube is a point of view video from someone from Haiti actually living through the storm. Viewers will see the terror and once again, help donate by realizing how much of a serious issue Haiti has on it’s hands.

Youtube is an easy way to spread awareness arising from natural disasters such as Hurricane Matthew. Youtube will work well for Doctors Without Borders because these videos will go viral. One can also make a video as long as they need in order to get a point across with whatever information is needed as

well. With the two video examples listed above and the reach that youtube has out to the entire world, many people will view the videos and try and help the cause. We will monitor this platform by checking every day to see if the videos keep on getting more and more views. If the views start to stop then more videos can always be posted helping the cause.

PLATFORM #3 (Instagram)

Messaging/ Tactic A.

A picture that shows the damages left being from Hurricane Matthew and what it really looks like on the streets of Haiti prior to the storm.

Messaging/ Tactic B.

Two children standing side-by-side as they look at the damage from Hurricane Matthew and the c onditions that the country is forced to live in for the time being and the flooding waters left behind.

Instagram is another emerging social media market that many people around the world have access to and check every day. If this organization can get someone with a great amount of followers to talk about the problem and post instagram pictures than everyone will see. One can monitor this platform the same way as twitter, by checking every day. More pictures can be posted on the topic since there is no limit to the amount once can post. If a user of Instagram searches a hashtag having to do with helping Haiti then the pictures will come up. This tactic will work with Doctors Without Borders because of how many people use Instagram and how viewers can actually see pictures of the devastation.

EMERGING NEW PLATFORM (Snapchat)

I recommend Snapchat as an emerging new platform because it has just started to become a huge way of social media around the world recently. With snapchat, one can post pictures and stories.

Messaging/ Tactic.

In order to get the topic out to the world through snapchat, representatives from Doctors Without Borders should go to Haiti and try to help the citizens in anyway possible. Whether it is cleaning up or bringing food, anything will help. While doing so, they can be recorded on Snapchat and sent out on stories or to different organizations and people. These users will view the pictures and see how good of a cause this is worth fighting for.
