I have chosen the theme of “loss” in song lyrics because it is a universal theme that

everyone has experienced or will experience during their lifetime. Almost everyone can share a

story of loss whether it was losing a friend, loved one, cousin, relative, neighbor, colleague, pet,

coworker, or family member. Also, loss can occur in different ways, forms, places, and

circumstances. One person’s father may have died in a war, while another person’s best friend

got murdered on their way home from school. The experiences vary from person to person but

one element stays the same which is the grief that comes afterwards. It is said that a person goes

through five stages of grief after the loss of someone close to him or her. The first stage begins

with denial then the stages of anger, bargaining, grieving, and acceptance come afterwards.

People don’t always go through the stages in sequence. Sometimes they bounce back and forth

between a couple of stages for a long time. In some cases, completing the cycle can take months.

Therefore, the theme of loss is universal and as sensitive and upsetting as it is, it must be

examined in a classroom with students.

The theme of “loss” relates to teens in the 11th grade because most of them, if not all,

have experienced loss at least once in their lifetime. Students find it difficult to talk about their

experiences with the loss of a loved one. Some may have experienced loss when they were kids

while others may have had a recent experience. That is why it is important to include this theme

somewhere during the school year. Students would appreciate reading about how others are

struggling with loss, especially celebrities they listen to and look up to. By exposing students to

the topic and completing worksheets and activities with it, students would hopefully open up

about their experiences by the end of the unit. With such a sensitive and personal topic, students

will have the chance to share their experiences as well as their grief together. This will create

sense of empathy amongst the students.

The students for whom this unit is designed for are juniors in a Detroit high school. They

are almost an equal mix of males and females. Students are racially diverse with 60% being

African American, 20% being Latino, 10% being Caucasian and 10% other. Academically

Page 3: fayzahyahya.weebly.com€¦  · Web viewPoetry Unit: Loss. Grade: 11. th. Fayzah. Yahya. 04 December 2013. Rationale. I have chosen the theme of “loss” in song lyrics because

speaking, the students are capable learners but they don’t find school interesting and would

rather mess around. Some are on a higher level while some will need extra help and guidance.

However, with only one or two exceptions, the class is below reading level by two grades.

Because of this level learning ability, the students will require more easy to read material to be

used with the unit. The students are somewhat socially adjusted with a few who like to refuse to

complete assignments and pay attention at all. It could be that the ones acting up are depressed,

struggling with friends, having a hard time learning the material, having problems at home, or

suffering from health issues or a tragedy. These students will need additional help and patience

from the class and teacher.

In terms of social status, a majority of the class is in the working class. Two students

seem to be living under the poverty level and don’t realize the importance of an education for

their future. One of these students lost their his father when he was a child to a car accident and

his mother is the one who provides for him. Another student in the class can’t help but pick

fights with everyone about anything. He is depressed and angry all the time. According to

rumors, his best friend who dropped out of school got shot while hanging around an abandoned

house in Detroit with his friends. The rest of the class seems to have both parents providing for

them.

Moreover, students in the class have a wide range of interests. While some have taken up

hobbies with sports, music, art, others would rather hang out with friends or not come to school

at all. Most of the males in the class like to listen to rap and hip-hop music in the hallway, during

lunch and even during their classes. The singers they look up are Tupac, Eminem, Lil Wayne,

and other mainstream singers. As for sports, two boys are on the basketball team. They are into

this sport and hope to make it far and become professional athletes. Many of the males enjoy

hanging out and talking about their adventures in different places such as the fights they had seen

or about girls. As for the females, many of them are into their personal appearance. One female

is into art so she draws often during classes especially when the lecture is boring. She likes to

Page 4: fayzahyahya.weebly.com€¦  · Web viewPoetry Unit: Loss. Grade: 11. th. Fayzah. Yahya. 04 December 2013. Rationale. I have chosen the theme of “loss” in song lyrics because

draw dark figures and words that describe her mood of sadness. Another female always seems

depressed because her father is a soldier who was deployed in Afghanistan. She is afraid of the

day that she would receive a phone call of his death. Nonetheless, all the students are at that

point in their lives where drama is happening at a daily basis and many conflicts are occurring.

Many students are struggling with other students, with their parents, with their teachers, with

society and most importantly with themselves. They have to make choices everyday such

whether they want to continue school or just dropout. Whether they want to pay attention in class

or mess around. Whether they want to complete class work or listen to music on their phones.

Whether they want to pass the class or just show up, do nothing, and wait till they can drop out.

A big factor at this age is starting to decide what to do with one’s future plans. The students are

struggling with their future and what choices they want to make. Therefore the teacher of this

struggling class will need to use interesting material in order to attract the students’ attention and

interest.

In terms of concerns, some students are concerned about their grades and actually

graduating and attending a college but others just want to get an “A,” graduate and start working.

One girl is concerned with her father’s life, another student is concerned about his mother

working all the time to provide for him and a few students are concerned with hanging with their

buddies and keeping them satisfied.

The selections I have chosen are “Wake me up when September Ends” by Green Day,

“Gone Too Soon” by Michael Jackson, “I’ll be missing you” by Puff Daddy, “I Wish” by R

Kelly, and “Difficult” by Eminem. These selections fit into the unit because each song is a

tribute from the singer to a loved one who passed away. Additionally, the singers are known

amongst students and will appeal to them. Green Day write about his father’s death, Michael

Jackson writes about a friend’s death, Puff Daddy writes about his friend’s death, R Kelly writes

about his friend’s death, and Eminem also writes about his friend’s death. Each singer describes

the person in which the song was written about and most of them remember the times they had

Page 5: fayzahyahya.weebly.com€¦  · Web viewPoetry Unit: Loss. Grade: 11. th. Fayzah. Yahya. 04 December 2013. Rationale. I have chosen the theme of “loss” in song lyrics because

together. The selections are meant to trigger sympathy from the students and to assure them that

they are not alone when it comes to experiencing the death of a loved one.

The first selection is “Wake me up when September Ends” by Green Day. Green Day

lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong wrote this about his father, who died of cancer on September

1st, 1982. At his father's funeral, Billie cried, ran home and locked himself in his room. When

his mother got home and knocked on the door to Billie's room, Billie simply said, "Wake me up

when September ends," hence the title. The story behind this song is sad and will appeal to those

students who have lost their father. This song is about wisdom and acceptance. "Drenched in my

pain again, becoming who we are" - the realization of the fact that everything we go through, all

the pain and losses, all the hardships we meet along the way are meant to make us stronger and

shape our personalities. With this selection, I will ask students to predict what the song is about

by viewing the cover and title only. Students will then complete their vocabulary and questions;

then move onto the concluding activities which is are illustrate a cover for the song and create a

short movie.

The second selection is “Gone Too Soon” by Michael Jackson. Jackson's version of

"Gone Too Soon" was dedicated to the memory of Jackson's friend Ryan White, a teenager

from Kokomo, Indiana who came to national attention, after being expelled from his school for

having HIV/AIDS. Michael uses a lot of figurative language to describe how White passed away.

With this selection, I will introduce and explain the song. Then, I will ask students to follow the

task sheet and complete the lesson in collaborative groups. They will answer content,

interpretation and application questions then do a Copy-change of the song in six groups. When

the groups have completed their changed song, they will present it to the class and choose four

pictures to go with it. They will explain why they chose the images.

The third selection is “I’ll be missing you” by Puff Daddy. Puff Daddy’s tribute to his

friend the Notorious B.I.G. was written, recorded, and released less than three months after

Biggie’s death, and became one of the top-selling rap singles ever. In this selection, Puff Daddy

Page 6: fayzahyahya.weebly.com€¦  · Web viewPoetry Unit: Loss. Grade: 11. th. Fayzah. Yahya. 04 December 2013. Rationale. I have chosen the theme of “loss” in song lyrics because

talks about his memories with his friend and how much he misses him. He is grieving for his

friend and trying to accept the fact that he is gone. With this selection, I plan number students off

into six groups and give each group a bag of the lyrics to decipher and put together like a puzzle.

Students will then complete their vocabulary and questions; then move onto the concluding

activities which are to illustrate the song or make a collage.

The fourth selection is “I Wish” by R Kelly. The song is dedicated to his mother Sadie

who died in 1993 as well as friends that had passed away. In this song, R Kelly describes all the

memories, all the times he had while his friend was still alive and his feelings before and after

the tragedy. He admits that his inner feelings are not what he shows and that he wishes to hold

his mother and friend again. This song will teach students that fame, money and luxury can never

take the place of a friend or loved one. With this selection, the students will work in

collaborative groups to do a choral reading. Students will practice with poems first, then they

will work together in groups to do a choral reading in which they will perform in the class.

The fifth selection is “Difficult” by Eminem. This song is dedicated to DeShaun Dupree

Holton, better known by his stage name Proof. He was an American rapper and actor

from Detroit, Michigan. He was a close childhood friend of rapper Eminem, who lived on the

same block. In 2006, Proof was shot and killed during an altercation at the CCC nightclub in

Detroit. In this song, Eminem describes Proof and the good times he had with him. Eminem feels

regret over not telling Proof that he loved him. With this selection, I’ll show students the article

which talks about Proof’s death and they will need to complete the five W’s worksheet on it.

Students will then answer content, interpretation and application questions. With the concluding

activity, students will choose between a music video and an interview.

Objectives1. Students will view and discuss articles on the death of a loved one.2. Students will discuss the nature of loss.

9. Students will view the music video of the song “Gone Too Soon” then read it in collaborative learning groups.

10. Students will discuss content, interpretation and application questions among themselves. 11. Students in each collaborative group will copy and change the song “Gone Too Soon.”12. Students will choose a picture to go with their newly made song. 13. Students will decipher a jigsaw puzzle of the lyrics of the song.14. Students will listen and view the song.15. "I'll Be Missing You"(Puff Daddy feat. 112, Faith Evans)

Seems like yesterday we used to rock the showI laced the track, you locked the flow

So far from hangin on the block for doughNotorious, they got to know that

Life ain't always what it seem to be (uh-uh)

Page 21: fayzahyahya.weebly.com€¦  · Web viewPoetry Unit: Loss. Grade: 11. th. Fayzah. Yahya. 04 December 2013. Rationale. I have chosen the theme of “loss” in song lyrics because

Words can't express what you mean to meEven though you're gone, we still a team

Through your family, I'll fulfill your dream (that's right)In the future, can't wait to see

If you open up the gates for meReminisce some time, the night they took my friend (uh-huh)

Try to black it out, but it plays againWhen it's real, feelings hard to conceal

Can't imagine all the pain I feelGive anything to hear half your breath (half your breath)

I know you still living your life, after death

Every step I take, every move I makeEvery single day, every time I pray

I'll be missing youThinkin of the day, when you went awayWhat a life to take, what a bond to break

I'll be missing you

[Puff] I miss you Big

[Verse Two: Puff Daddy]

It's kinda hard with you not around (yeah)Know you in heaven smilin down (eheh)

Watchin us while we pray for youEvery day we pray for youTil the day we meet again

In my heart is where I'll keep you friendMemories give me the strength I need (uh-huh) to proceed

Strength I need to believeMy thoughts Big I just can't define (can't define)

“I Wish”

R KellyI wish, I wish, I wish

To every cityI wish, I wish, I wish

Every hoodI wish, I wish, I wish

Page 25: fayzahyahya.weebly.com€¦  · Web viewPoetry Unit: Loss. Grade: 11. th. Fayzah. Yahya. 04 December 2013. Rationale. I have chosen the theme of “loss” in song lyrics because

And every blockI wish, I wish, I wish

Ghetto America!

Rollin' through the hoodJust stopped by to say what's up

And let you knowThat your baby boy ain't doing so tough

And even though you passedGoing on four long years

Still waking up late at night crying tearsJust thinking about those days

You used to talk to meSmilin' while I'm sippin' on this Hennessy

And remember we bragged on how rich we would beTo get up out this hood was like a fantasy

And now you hear my songs the radio is playin'Oh I can't believe my ears

And what everybody's sayin'And boy I'll tell you

Folks don't know the halfI would give it all upJust to take one ride

(With you)How I used to kick it on the front porch

(With you)And how I used to lay back and smoke weed

(With you)And all the little basement party joints we'd do

Now I'm just missing youHow I wish

[2]I wish that I could hold you nowI wish that I could touch you now

I wish that I could talk to youBe with you somehow

I know you're in a better placeEven though I can't see your face

I know you're smiling down on meSaying everything's okay

And if I make it out this thug lifeI'll see you again someday

I wish, I wish, I wishI wish, I wish, I wish

[Verse 2]Now ever since this money come

It's been nothing but stressSometimes I wish I could just trade in my successY'all look at me and say boy you've been blessedBut y'all don't see the inside of my unhappiness

Man I swear this shit gets heavy like a tonThat's why you hear me shootin'

Page 26: fayzahyahya.weebly.com€¦  · Web viewPoetry Unit: Loss. Grade: 11. th. Fayzah. Yahya. 04 December 2013. Rationale. I have chosen the theme of “loss” in song lyrics because

This real shit off like a gunHmm I wonder how my friends would treat me now

If I wasn't iced up with a Bentley and a houseThat's why fake ass niggas get fake ass digits

And fake ass players get a real player hatin' 'emHoney Love goes platinum and y'all ass come around

But y'all don't wanna raise the roofUntil my shit is going down

[Repeat 1](With you)

How I used to hoop off in them tournaments(With you)

And how I used to club hop on weekends(With you)

Your family called the morning of the tragic endDamn, my condolences

Voices in my head be telling me to come to churchSaying the Lord is the only way for you to stop the hurt

Dreaming of windows black tinted like a hearseWhen waking up to life sometimes seems worse

And all I ever wanted is to be a better manAnd I try to keep it real with my homies landFor me to save the world I don't understand

How did I become the leader of a billion fans?(With you)

How I used to street perform on Friday(With you)

And how I used to go to church on Easter Sunday(With you)

Instead of you all throwing them stones at meSomebody pray for me

[Repeat: x3]I wish that I could hold you nowI wish that I could touch you now

I wish that I could talk to youBe with you somehow

I know you're in a better placeEven though I can't see your face

I know you're smiling down on meSaying everything's okay

“Difficult” Eminem

[Verse 1]They ask me am I okay, they ask me if I'm happy

Are they asking me that because of the shit that's been thrown at me

Page 27: fayzahyahya.weebly.com€¦  · Web viewPoetry Unit: Loss. Grade: 11. th. Fayzah. Yahya. 04 December 2013. Rationale. I have chosen the theme of “loss” in song lyrics because

Or am I just a little snappy and they genuinely careDoody, most of my life it's just been me and you there

And I continuously stare at pictures of youI never gotta say I love you as much as I wanted to but I do

Yeah I say it now and you can't hear me, what the fuck good doesThat do me now, but somehow I know you're near me in presence

Oh, I went and dropped some presents off for Easter to themTwo little beautiful boys of yours to try to ease their minds a little

And dog you'll never believe thisBut Sharonda actually talks to me now

Jesus and everyone else is just tryna pick up the piecesMan how you touch so many fucking lives and just leave usThey say grievance has a way of affecting everyone different

If it's true how the fuck am I supposed to get over you, difficult as it sounds

[Verse 2]Doody, that's what we call each other, I don't know where it came from

But it just stuck with us, we was always brothersNever thought about each other's skin colours

'Til one day we was walking up the block in the summerIt was like 90 degrees I was catching a sun burn

Tryna walk under the trees just to give me some comfortI'm moaning I just wanna get home when I look over and your shirt is off

I'm like you gonna fry and you're like, "No I won't, I'm black stupidBlack people they got melatonin

In their skin don't burn," meanwhile my face is glowing and I feltLike I'm on fire and the entire time you're just laughing at me

And snapping at me with your shirt, bastardAnd I still have to get you back for that shit

And by the way them Playboy rings, my mother stole from youWell Nate finally got 'em back shit

It musta been at least 16 years ago, well I put 'em in your cask-owwMoving past it, it still ain't registered yet

But you can bet your legacy they'll never forgetThe Motor City, Motown, hip hop vet, Hip Hop Shop, dreads

It don't stop there, yeah, as difficult as it sounds

[Verse 3]And this might sound a little strange but I'mma tell it

I found that jacket that you left at my wedding and I picked it up to smell itI wrapped it up in plastic until I put it in glass

And hang up in the hallway so I can always look at itAnd as for all me and D12 we feel like fuck rap

It feels like our general just fucking died in our lapWe shut off all our pagers, all our cell numbers is changed

Our two-ways are in the trash so some cats will have to find a new wayAnd I know the dreams will die with you today

Page 28: fayzahyahya.weebly.com€¦  · Web viewPoetry Unit: Loss. Grade: 11. th. Fayzah. Yahya. 04 December 2013. Rationale. I have chosen the theme of “loss” in song lyrics because

But the truth is there all still here and you ain'tPurple Gang, you gotta keep pressing on

Don't ever give up the dream dog, I got love for you allAnd Doody, it's true you bought people together who never

Woulda been in the same room if it wasn't for youYou were the peacemaker Doody, I know sometimes you were moody

But you hated confrontation and truly hated the feudingBut you were down for yours whenever it came to scrapping

If it had to happen, it had to happen, believe meI know you're the one who taught me to throw them bows back on Dresden

From making cars to paintballing and getting arrestedTo sitting across from each other in cells laughing and jesting

They tried to hit us for five years for that, no questionI guess them hookers and bums that we shot up

Didn't show up for court so we got off on a technicality, left sweatingMe, you and what's his face, I forgot his fucking name

Shame he even came to your funeral, he betrayed our teamAnd if I see him again I'mma punch him in the fucking faceAnd that's on Hallie Jade, Whitney Lane and Alaina's name

I let the pistol bang once just to leak a shot in the airFor you and pour some liquor out for you with Obie in the parking lot

Of 54 just before we were supposed to get in carsTo come and see you, once more difficult as it sounds

From “Don’t Take My Grief Away”

by Doug Manning

A cut finger—

Is numb before it bleeds,

It bleeds before it hurts,

It hurts until it begins to heal,

It forms a scab and itches until finally,

The scab is gone and

A smaller scar is left where

Once there was a wound.

Grief is the deepest wound you

Have ever had.

Like a cut finger,

It goes through stages and

Leaves a scar.

My Sorrow© Karina Herrera

Life is dead without you. Feel an empty hole inside.

Can’t be me with you not near. With a frown I cry.

Tears run down my face.Needles go through my heart.

Felt a pain rushing in the day you went away.

Want to run away, and hide.Leave this all behind.

Know that words won’t bring you back.Still I have to try.

Can’t breathCan’t see

Can’t live my lifeCan’t bare the feeling I have inside.

Want to yell, and let it all out.Instead I keep it all inside.

Hoping I won’t start to cry when I see you in my mind.Felt a numbness coming in when I heard that you were gone.

Can’t stop the constant think of youOne day we’ll meet again.

We’ll leave the world behind.Until we meet another time my life is nothing, but in sorrow.

Sometimes© Colleen Ranney

Sometimes I catch a glimpse,In softened waves of blue

My child, my heart …when I see a smileI can’t help but think of you

Sometimes these waves fill oceans. And feelings string on every shore

A collections of each memoryAnd every way I wish for more

Sometimes I watch for answersBecause each day I call to you

I ask for faith and courageAnd strength …to help me through

Sometimes I ask for braveryLike dolphins in the deep

Because time moves oh so slowlyAnd some times the road is steep

Sometimes I want to screamThis was not what I had planned

Why you ever sufferedA mom can’t understand

Sometimes I hear your laughterAnd remember you at play

But My Child I always miss youNot sometimes, but everyday
