Learning Goals
To go through the four stages of the design process
To become familiar with the work of other professional artists/designers through research
To learn various approaches to expanding your ability to be creative by trying new ways of producing images
To learn new methods of production
To work towards producing a professional quality skateboard
Stages 1 and 2:RESEARCH AND ANALYSIS (Assignment)__________________________________________________________________________________Clearly identify what appeals to you before deciding what you will create. DON’T GET STUCK ON ONE SINGLE IDEABe open to the creative process:
Don’t limit yourself or your work! Where to find skateboard designs and designers to start your research document:
1. Go the website: www.skdbweb.wordpress.com
2. Go to the “Student Portal” section
3. Select “It’s All About Design”
4. Scroll down to UNIT 3 and open these two files: SKD 3-1 PPT Board Design Research
SKD 3-1 Designer Research List
RESEARCH ASSIGNMENT AND CHECK LIST1. Cover all 9 areas (below) in your research and analysis 2. Select three(3) individual boards to apply your analysis (not a “brand” or grouping of
boards)3. Make every attempt to choose three (3) artists/designers and identify “who” they are, their
names4. Use only high-resolution files (not low resolution)
1. What is the designer’s name? (out of /5)
2. Where did you find their work? If on a website, copy the link into your “Research Report” (out of /5)
ANALYSIS3. Apply FOUR ELEMENTS AND FOUR PRINCIPLES to each (marked out of /20)
Elements: Line Color Value (light to
dark colors)
Geometric or organic forms
Space Texture
Principles: Balance Emphasis Contrast Rhythm
(movement)
Pattern Unity Variety Proportion
4. What SUBJECT MATTER did they focus on? (out of /5)
For example: Social Cultural (traditional or POP/popular culture) Political (is there a political message?) Personally relevant (emotional) Something they reject Something they endorse

6. What colors or COLOR SCHEME did they use? (out of /5)
Bright colors Subdued colors Cool or warm colors Describe the color scheme:
7. What approach to FORM did they take? (out of /5)
Geometric? (circles, squares, triangles) Organic? (natural shapes, not
mathematical) Note: animals and people do not apply to
either of the above unless stylized
8. What type of COMPOSITION did they use? (out of /5) Asymmetrical Symmetrical Radial
9. Why does this work appeal to you? Consider all eight of the topics you’ve covered above and define this. Be specific, not vague answers(out of /5)
Your research assignment mark is out of /60
Stage 3: DESIGN__________________________________________________________________________________
Apply your research and analysis to designing your own board…
1. Play with various ideas and draw them out on the design “working sheets” provided (manipulate images)
2. Learn and practice different paint techniques on 6” x6” paper and on a 6” x 6” wooden frames
a)Sketch it out…
• Take a variety of approaches. • Play with your ideas • Think of the sketches as “rough working drawings”
Design Tip: A “creative process” is one where you try a variety of approaches until you determine the best approach for the final design or product
B) Choose to play upon a theme…this is a great way of generating new ideas for your work!
These are all variations on one theme or idea where the designer played with the idea, imagined it in various settings with different backgrounds, developed new compositions

PLAY WITH AND MANIUPULATE YOUR CHOSEN, IMAGE(S) OR THEMES
Once you determine what image(s) you want to work with you need to play with the concept to determine the best possible outcome…
1. Enlarge images (play with scale and size, mix it up) 2. Simplify / abstract images
3. Cut and re-arrange images (on paper)
4. Alter the point of view (birds eye – close up or macro - aerial or airplane view)
5. Change the shape (circle, square, long, rectangle)
6. Add text if you want
C) Play with various color themes…
D) Learn and practice different paint techniques(Use the 6” x6” paper and on a 6” x 6” wooden frames provided)
CHOOSE AND USE HIGH RESOLUTION FILES
Always “view file” before copying the image and pasting it into your document, this way you get the largest image file possible, not a thumbnail (smaller, poor quality, low resolution image)
