Hair and Beauty Show Write Up

1 Understand the requirements of working to a brief.

Structure of briefsCommission Brief: For our multi-camera unit we were asked to film and Livestream the North West Regional College’s annual hair and beauty show which they have done for the last six years, with this year’s theme being bohemian. Once we were given the brief, we started going through how we could film it without hindering the live audience, which was to be largely made up of students and their families.

Opportunities Contributions to project brief: With such a large brief it was important that everyone was happy with and understood their job roles during the show. To help determine how the jobs should be divided, we first made a list of what would need to be done and then went through who would be comfortable doing them. most knew what they wanted to do and quickly volunteered, and those who were left were happy to do what jobs were left.

2 Be able to develop a planned response to a brief.

PlanHealth and safety: One major thing we had to take into account when planning to film and live stream the hair and beauty show, was where we would be placed as well as our equipment, since we would be filming the show with fairly large cameras (JVCs) on tripods. This is because these would be difficult to quickly manoeuvre around in the case of an emergency such as a fire, and because of this it limited our options on where we could place our camera since

much of the hall would be filled with tightly packed seats. To get around this, we planned to have 3 out of the 4 cameras positioned behind or to the side of the seats, with only the main camera (me) place beside the judges in a small cleared out area for a shot looking straight down the catwalk.

Prepare plan to meet requirements: In order to keep all members of the team working on this brief up to date I was important to have a means of contacting each other, in order to work efficiently. So we created a group chat on messenger, which we could use to plan for the show out when not in college.

DevelopSelecting best option: When deciding on how to best film it we came to the conclusion that it was best to try to use 4 different cameras. The positioning of them was important since it obviously had to have a good angle on the stage, but also somewhere where it would not pose a health and safety risk, for example, in a fire they could become an obstacle in the event of a fire as mentioned before. In the end we decided to have the main camera beside the judges, looking straight down the catwalk, camera 2 in right corner facing the stage. And cameras 3 and 4 on opposite sides of the catwalk, beside where the models would enter and exit, only camera 3 would have a close up shot of them entering or leaving and camera 4 would film them at the end of the catwalk from behind.

3 Be able to apply a response to a brief

Relationship with clientLiaison with client: After receiving the brief to film and live stream the hair and beauty show the main thing there was to discuss with the organizers of the event is what they had planned for the layout of the event already (as well as the script for the event, as seen below). This was because we could then plan the positions of the cameras, but also so we could plan for where we could place the vision mixing desk as well as having a space which would have plenty of power outlets. This was so that we would be able to plug in multiple chargers for the camera batteries, as well as the vision mixing equipment itself. It was decided that a section of the balcony on the second floor which overlooked the stage was the best location.

The Script:

Media and Performing Arts, I’d like to thank you all for coming along to support

this great event.

Thank you and goodnight!

4 Be able to review work on completion of a brief

Communication: During the show, since all of the camera operators would be placed far from each other and the vision mixer where the director would be sitting to give us instructions it was important to be able to communicate well. To do this efficiently we managed to get walkie talkies (with earphones as to not interrupt the show during communication). However, we only were able to get 4 of these when we needed at least 5, 4 between all of the camera operators and one for the vision mixer and director. We decided that the vision mixing desk would have one to be able to give instructions to at least 3 of the cameras, and then that the main camera should also receive one since it would of course have the main shot down the catwalk. After that we decided the last 2 walkie talkies should go to camera 2 and 3, since they would have more unique shots than camera 4.

Conclusion: In the end I believe we as a team met the requirements of the brief as we were able to successfully film and live stream the entire show, seemingly without a problem. I believe this was due to the fact that almost all members of the team took their job roles seriously and so we were able to plan the project better and so were able to execute it better. I believe it was also down to the communication we had with those who were planning the live show, so we were able to plan and account for the layout of the event much further ahead of time. this helped to give us a better understanding of what we could and could not do.
