2018 Springfield Renaissance School Summer Reading

9th Grade

Your Task: For 9th grade, students will read the novel Piecing Me Together, by Renée Watson and create 20 impact cards. If this assignment is not completed by the first day of school, you will receive a Learning Target of a zero!

Impact Cards – What makes an impact on you as you read?

On the front of the card, you are to copy a passage (more than one sentence) from the book you are reading and the page number on which it is found. Impact cards can be: used to have “solitary” discussions with a text; a springboard for class discussion; textual evidence for essays.

On the back of the card, you should write down why you chose that quote to record and what it’s about.

What can you put on your impact cards?1. Passages that “seem” significant or interesting in any way2. Places where you are stumped, confused, lost.3. Examples of language that is beautiful, pleasurable, striking.4. A-Ha moment where the text clicks in your mind.5. Points of deep engagement, a personal or inter-textual

connection.6. Things that make you angry.7. Descriptions of characters or setting.8. Intense moments.

The Importance of impact cards:1. Teaches you to be a closer, more conscious, more aware reader – your literary antennae are always

up!! Looking always for ideas, patterns, symbols, and inter-textual connections.2. Learn about yourself as a reader: what engages you, distracts you, confuses you, pleases you, and

challenges you.3. Allows for deeper, more focused text-based literary seminars4. Collection of evidence to use in your analytic essays.

How can I get my hands on this book? The book is also available for $7.99 on Amazon.com and is stocked at the Summer Reading Table at Barnes and Noble in Holyoke. Many copies are available at local libraries as well.
