Technical Teaching Fellowships July 2019 – July 2020

The Technical Teaching Fellowship (TTF) programme will celebrate, develop and disseminate exceptional practice in technical teaching, to support and empower the industrial and technical expertise of the next generation.

Funded fellowships will enable successful applicants to carryout knowledge transfer activities to develop and promote a model of professional excellence in their delivery of technical education, raising the profile of organisations employing and encouraging individuals who exhibit exceptional practice.

We are encouraging providers with exceptional technical education and training to identify and encourage a suitable member of staff to submit an expression of interest for a technical Teaching Fellowship.

Successful applicants will be invited to a Technical Teaching Fellowship Reception in December 2018.

In summary, it is planned that successful applicants will:

- receive an award of £5,000 - £15,000 to support knowledge transfer activity and to ensure remission time is guaranteed (awards will be payable to the employing organisation, but funding must be clearly allocated to enable Fellows to carry out their agreed activities);

- develop “Pathways to Impact” knowledge exchange activity plans, to maximise the benefit of their Fellowships;

- attend two one-day developmental workshops over the academic cycle 2019/2020;

- be allocated a programme mentor to support them for the duration of the programme;

- be expected to disseminate their work at national conferences in January and July 2020;

- contribute to the delivery of a final report, written to engage and motivate technical education in their area of practice.

Successful applicants will be made Fellows of the Society for Education and Training and be awarded a year’s free membership during their participation in the programme. The programme will accept applications from any region of England, any type of ESFA funded provider and any type of practitioner role. Joint applications from two individuals wishing to work together will be considered, both from one organisation or as a partnership between two providers.

Fellowships may be awarded in any area of technical education where innovative practice is already providing exceptional learning experiences. Applicants must be able to demonstrate the quality and impact of the work for which they are being proposed to become a Fellow. It may be for one specific area of practice (e.g. employer engagement / innovative teaching) or for a range of activity that collectively form a powerful and sector leading experience for their learners.

Applications should propose knowledge transfer activities to support curriculum development and delivery that will drive improvement and allow the wider sharing of effective practice. Full support will be given to assess the potential of the Technical Teaching Fellowship to drive growth, particularly in areas where there are greater skills needs or limited employer engagement with skills development.

Successful proposals will be characterised by:

1. Demonstrating highly effective approaches to teaching and learning in technical education, including use of new technologies and equipment alongside evidence-based teaching practice

2. Promoting effective employer engagement, through sharing examples of innovative practice in industrial and technical education partnerships and exploring industrial and scientific developments relevant to curriculum delivery

3. Showing potential to drive economic growth or industrial expertise locally, regionally and across the wider economy

4. Involving professional associations, learned societies, skills groups and other partners to support activity, raise the profile of the Technical Teaching Fellowships programme and maximise its impact

5. Promoting standards of professional practice, in teaching and in the workplace, developing Technical Teaching Fellows as role models to promote excellence in technical and vocational educational practice
