A distinguishing characteristic of SickKids is the integration of research, learning and the care of a sick child.

Clinical facts & figures (2015-16 Annual Report):

More than 40 per cent of SickKids patients come from outside the Greater Toronto Area for services that are not available anywhere else in the province and in some cases, the country.

SickKids Research Institute The SickKids Research Institute is the largest child health

research institute in Canada and a centre for excellence and innovation that places SickKids on the world stage of health-care expertise. Researchers from around the world are drawn to SickKids to help understand and prevent disease, find cures and transform children’s health.

By embedding research within a hospital, scientists are able to ensure clinically relevant scientific questions are asked.

The Research Institute’s comprehensive structure integrates research endeavours and resources right across the health continuum.

In asking relevant scientific questions we employ collaborative in-depth research, fully integrated programs and empowered independent researchers.

Scientists, professional staff, students and trainees are organized into seven programs which encompass different aspects of scientific discovery:

o Cell Biologyo Child Health Evaluative Scienceso Developmental & Stem Cell Biologyo Genetics & Genome Biology
