Heritage International School “Children are a heritage from the Lord…” Psalm 127:3 Grade 8 English Language Arts Course Description 2014-2015 Subject Philosophy The power of the written and spoken word is almost as old as humanity itself. Throughout human history language has had a profound effect on shaping history and culture. In the modern age of mass communication it is more important than ever that young people learn to evaluate the messages they see and hear and that their writing can convey meaning powerfully. As beings made in the image of the Creator, we must be given the opportunity to create. Poetry, story writing and scripting give students the chance to explore their God-given creativity, and in-depth study of poetry, prose and drama encourages the student to enjoy the creativity of others. This world is broken, and the greatest writers are those that seek to explore, explain, rationalize and reconcile the good and the evil around them. All the set texts address this in a way that develops understanding of humanity. They raise the big questions about life and the universe and should engender in the student a mind that seeks to explore and understand the world and their place within it. Course Description In Grade 8 we focus on preparing students for high school. We have a strong focus on reading, writing, speaking and listening. We will be introduced to longer, yet fewer units. Much of our focus will be on the reading and analyzing of novels, plays and poetry within the classroom. Emphasis will be placed on the following units: 1. Short Stories 2. Novels: The Outsiders, 3. Poetry 4. Drama: The Diary of Anne Frank 5. Non-Fiction and Media Key Biblical Integrative Concepts Examine literature as it compares to morals and values displayed in the Bible. Explore allusions in the Bible in literature, and study the significance of biblical teaching in both older and modern literature. Discuss the value of novels and stories in which the characters act against biblical teachings, and consider what lessons these examples provide to the Christian student. Assessment • Quizzes, tests - 30%

Semester exam - 20% Daily homework and participation - 10% Projects and assignments - 40%
