In the Holy Name of Jesus Christ, Welcome to Saint Thomas’ Church!

We are a lively, active community of faith. We strive to be a loving congregation, committed to welcoming ALL and sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ. Our Church building is a beautiful and distinguished historic site. We invite you to read more about us. There is information on our Literature Table at the back of the Church and on our website. We are happy that you are here with us today! Please learn more about our worship from the notes below.

ABOUT THE EPISCOPAL CHURCH and OUR WORSHIP The Episcopal Church, USA, is the American branch of the 85-million member

worldwide Anglican Communion – those Churches born out of The Church of England. Of the world’s 2.2 billion Christians, we are the third largest body.

In our worship, there is strong emphasis upon congregational participation. The Clergy and the congregation together conduct our services. Worshippers are involved participants, not mere spectators. Please use The Book of Common Prayer (red), this Service Program and The Hymnal (blue) to worship God with joy and enthusiasm! Join in the responses, sing along on the Hymns. Share in praising and thanking our loving God for all His blessings!

Holy Communion is open to ALL Baptized persons, regardless of Church affiliation. Our Ushers will guide you forward at the appointed time. You may kneel or stand for Communion. Read more about this in the Communion section of this Service Booklet.

Our 10:A.M. service and many of our special services are live streamed on Facebook, then archived for later viewing. Note that you may be on camera at some point!

Celebrant: Blessed be God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

People: And blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen.

Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

BENEDICTUS ES, DOMINE – “Glory to you, Lord” – Hymnal *S-236 John Rutter

Celebrant: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

Celebrant: Let us pray.

The Collect of the Day (Epiphany III-A) Give us grace, O Lord, to answer readily the call of our Savior Jesus Christ and proclaim to all people the Good News of his salvation, that we and the whole world may perceive the glory of his marvelous works; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Old Testament Lesson: Isaiah 9:1-4

A Reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah. There will be no gloom for those who were in anguish. In the former time he brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the latter time he will make glorious the way of the sea, the land beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations. The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness – on them light has shined. You have multiplied the nation, you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as people exult when dividing plunder. For the yoke of their burden, and the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian.

Reader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

The Psalter: Psalm 27:1, 5-13 – Said by ALL – Remaining SEATED

1 The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom then shall I fear? * the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom then shall I be afraid? 5 One thing have I asked of the LORD; one thing I seek; * that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life; 6 To behold the fair beauty of the LORD * and to seek him in his temple. 7 For in the day of trouble he shall keep me safe in his shelter; * he shall hide me in the secrecy of his dwelling

and set me high upon a rock. 8 Even now he lifts up my head * above my enemies round about me. 9 Therefore I will offer in his dwelling an oblation

with sounds of great gladness; * I will sing and make music to the LORD. 10 Hearken to my voice, O LORD, when I call; * have mercy on me and answer me. 11 You speak in my heart and say, "Seek my face." * Your face, LORD, will I seek. 12 Hide not your face from me, * nor turn away your servant in displeasure. 13 You have been my helper; cast me not away; * do not forsake me, O God of my salvation.

The Epistle: I Corinthians 1:10-18

A Reading from the First Letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians.I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you be in agreement and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same purpose. For it has been reported to me by Chloe's people that there are quarrels among you, my brothers and sisters. What I mean is that each of you says, “I belong to Paul,” or “I belong to Apollos,” or “I belong to Cephas,” or “I belong to Christ.” Has Christ been divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius, so that no one can say that you were baptized in my name. (I did baptize also the household of Stephanas;

beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized anyone else.) For Christ did not send me to baptize but to proclaim the gospel, and not with eloquent wisdom, so that the cross of Christ might not be emptied of its power. For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

Reader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

SEQUENCE HYMN 661, “They cast their nets in Galilee” Georgetown

hen Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew to Galilee. He left Nazareth and made his home in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, so that what had been

spoken through the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled:W “Land of Zebulun, land of Naphtali, on the road by the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles – the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned.”

From that time Jesus began to proclaim, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” As he walked by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea – for they were fishermen. And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fish for people.” Immediately they left their nets and followed him. As he went from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his

brother John, in the boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets, and he called them. Immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed him. Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and curing every disease and every sickness among the people.

It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Because in the mystery of the Word made flesh you have caused a new light to shine in our hearts, to give the knowledge of your glory in the face of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:

e give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your

worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

On the night before he died for us, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.”

After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Therefore, according to his command, O Father,

MEMORIAL ACCLAMATION – Hymnal *S-138 Setting: McNeil Robinson

We remember his death,We proclaim his resurrection,We await his coming in glory.

The Celebrant continues

And we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, O Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine.

We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Sacrament of the Body of Christ and his Blood of the new Covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we may be acceptable through him, being sanctified by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, put all things in subjection under your Christ, and bring us to that heavenly country where, with the ever-Blessed Virgin Mary, Saint Joseph, Saint Thomas, Saint Mark, Saint Andrew, Saint John, Saint Peter, Saint Paul, Saint Patrick and all your saints, we may enter the everlasting heritage of your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation.

By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory are yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever.

THE SEASON AFTER THE EPIPHANY continues today and in the weeks ahead. The Church and the Lectionary focus us on several aspects of our faith during this time. These themes include light, call and mission. Light brings to mind the Star of Bethlehem which guided the Magi to Jesus and which guides all of us spiritually to Him who is “the light of the world.” Call reminds us that just as our Lord Called His first disciples to follow Him, so He Calls ALL of us to be His followers. Mission reminds us that the Church’s mission is always to spread the Gospel – the Good News of Jesus. This is a Season when Ordinations often take place, as those with special Callings seek to fulfill that Call. We think also of those who are Called to serve as missionaries overseas. This is a time of outreach, when we focus intently on meeting the needs of the poor and downcast, thus further spreading the Gospel. Your Clergy’s Sermons will focus on these themes during this Season. We know you will enjoy these special aspects of The Season after The Epiphany.

THE FEAST OF ‘CANDLEMAS’ is next Sunday, an important part of this Season after the Epiphany. This is a joyous day of light with “echoes of Christmas”. We again celebrate our Lord as the Light of the World, and we bless all the candles which will bring us His Light in the year ahead. There is a special procession, joyous music and great festivity. Don’t miss it – next Sunday!

AT ADULT EDUCATION TODAY we will look at the Biblical themes present in this Season after the Epiphany, also looking at today’s Gospel. Join Fr. Allan and Deacon Kirk in the Lower Parish Hall today after the 10:A.M. service. Coffee, tea, snacks and good fellowship are included.

PLEASE HELP YOURSELF TO A CHRISTMAS POINSETTIA! Take one to enjoy at home or as a gift for someone who is sick or shut-in. Take from those in the windows or at the Baptistery. Those at the Nave Altar and Chancel will be kept in the Church through Candlemas . Thank you!

ST. THOMAS’ WILL AGAIN BE PART OF ‘THE SOUPER BOWL OF CARING’ on Super Bowl Sunday – NEXT Sunday, February 2. This is an annual nationwide outreach effort. We will be selling jars of delicious homemade soups for you to heat and serve as you enjoy the Super Bowl. All proceeds will help the needy through the Winter Emergency Fund of the Interfaith Service Coalition. Buy some of our soup and help the poor at the same time! And if you will help by making some soup, please mark the Sign-Up Sheet or speak with Fr. Allan. Thank you!

ANNUAL REPORTS FROM PARISH LEADERS are now OVERDUE. If you are responsible for a report, please E-mail your report to Fr. Allan at [email protected]. Thanks!

Approximately 3.4 million people live in Puerto Rico, a U.S. territory. Our Bishops have designated Sunday, February 9, as a day to help. A special offering will be collected that day in Parishes across Maryland. This offering will be sent to the Bishop of Puerto Rico to help in the recovery effort. Fr.
