The number within the objective is the age band it falls in e.g. an objective which has 40 in is the 40-60+ months section. An objective with ELG stands for Early Learning Goal and children are expected to achieve most of these by the end of the year. The number at the end of the objective denotes which bullet point within the age band it is.

Phonics lessons on Facebook and YouTube for children to watch at home.We will release three short Speed Sound lessons with one of our trainers every day for the next two weeks. Sentence challenge

-With your child write the sentence (you modelling writing each word and they copy) : -Once there was a ladybird. She was quiet. The end-Write one sentence at a time-Count how many words are in the sentence -The words in red are words which must be learnt and cannot be sounded out. Look at the part of the word which is ‘tricky’ e.g. The – ‘th’ can be sounded out but it is the ‘e’ at the end which cannot be heard-The words in green can be sounded out using ‘Fred Fingers’. This means you sound out the word and show how many sounds are in the word e.g. qu – i – e-t needs 4 ‘Fred Fingers’. Show your child 4 fingers, ask them to do the same and then pinch each finger as the word is sounded out. Repeat this several times before writing the word-Add in a full stop -Read the sentence back to check it makes sense before moving onto the next Objective: w.40.7 Uses some clearly identifiable letters to communicate meaning, representing some sounds correctly and in sequence.w.ELG.2 They also write some irregular common words.

Maths Explain what a double and doubling means - become twice as much or as many / adding the same number together.Gather together up to 12 objects which are the same e.g. bricks or Lego or pencils which the children can use to count.Role the dice (with numbers up to 6 on) - the dice count be a brick with dots on. Then double that number by counting out two sets of objects and then counting them all e.g. role a 3 count out a group of 3 Lego bricks, then a second set of 3 Lego bricks, push them together, place in a line and count them all. Objective: n.ELG.3 They solve problems including doubling.

Listen to the Story of ‘What the Ladybird Heard’ on YouTube.Discuss with your child what happened in the story.Discuss with your child the actions of Hefty Hugh and Lanky Len and whether it was right for them to try and steal the cow?Discuss how the farmer might have felt when he realised they had tried to steal his cow and what clue they can find in the story to support this ideas e.g. the farmer is scowling and waving his fist at the end of the story. Discuss the consequences of taking things that do not belong to you. Objective: mfb.ELG.1 Children talk about how they and others show feelings, talk about their own and others’ behaviour, and itsconsequences, and know that some behaviour is unacceptable.

Maths Remind your child what doubling means - become twice as much or as many / adding the same number together.Create a set of number cards from 0-10 – this count be cut up pieces of paper with hand written number on.Draw a large ladybird with 2 clear halves – see image. Place them face down, get your child to choose a card and say what the number is.Using 1p coins or something similar place out two sets of the chosen number e.g. your child chooses the number 5, they place out 5 1ps on one side and 5 1ps on the other and then count how many they have altogether. Objective: n.ELG.3 They solve problems including doubling.

Discussion point –

philosophy for

children

Show your child an image of a fossil – do not tell them what it is.Ask them to create a question around the image using either who, what, when, where or why e.g. Who found it? What made someone keep it? Where is it kept? Why do people keep things that are unusual? (juts choose one to discuss) In philosophy for children the questions need to be open ended as there are no right and wrong answers just your child’s thoughts.Encourage your child to use the word ‘because’ to justify their answers. If you give your opinion state that, you either ‘agree’ or ‘disagree’ with what your child said and justify your answer by using ‘because’. If you could include everyone in your household in the discussion. Objective: s.ELG.3 They develop their own narratives and explanations by connecting ideas or events.

Outdoor learning

Take your child on a spring walk or just a look around your garden.Ask them to look for signs of spring e.g. leaves on trees, flowers, bright green grass, blossom.Discuss - plants need water, light, warmth and soil or compost to grow. During spring they get the conditions they need to begin to grow. The showery weather gives them the water they need. The longer days mean they have more daylight and warmth from the Sun which raises the temperature of both air and soil.Ask the children to record what they see either by taking photographs or drawing pictures.Objective: tw.ELG.3 They make observations of animals and plants and explain why some things occur, and talk about changes.

Play a game of tag with your child discuss about dodging and moving out of the way in order to not be ‘tagged’.Observe your body before exercise e.g. temperature of skin, colour of skin, heart rate, breathing rate. Observe your body after exercise e.g. hot and red sweaty skin, heart beating faster, breathing more quickly. Discuss why it is important to be active. Objective: mh.40.3 Negotiates space successfully when playing racing and chasing games with other children, adjusting speed or changing direction to avoid obstacles.Hsc.40.3 Shows some understanding that good practices with regard to exercise, eating, sleeping and hygiene can contribute to good health.
