Reading Assignments Week of April 20th – April 24th

Objective: Students will describe characters, settings, and major events in a story, using key details.

Students should read daily. Check out my Library Resources link on the main page for resources.

Parent instructions: This week is going to be a little different. I am going to have your child watch a series of videos from Superkids Online through the Parent Portal. These videos will help your child complete their work this week. Each video goes through the lesson and then some additional information about characters and plot. Please be sure to watch all the way to the end.

The Online Teacher will tell you that you need certain things for the lesson. You may have printed off the assignments for the week and might have the things she asks for, but if you do not have them it is ok. DO NOT STRESS!

You do not have to print the papers. You can just write answers on notebook paper as usual or take a picture.

Assignment 1:All students need to listen and read the story through the links below even if you can access the Portal. Make sure to watch until the end in each video. The Online Teacher will ask some comprehension questions like I would have in the classroom.

The Slumber Party: Video 1 https://zanerbloser.wistia.com/medias/9trb5whwfv

Video 2 https://zanerbloser.wistia.com/medias/1yc1lb26h3

The links can also be found in Class Story in Dojo under Reading Assignment 1: Video 1 and Video 2.

If you have problems accessing the link, please let me know right away, so we can find a remedy for you or an alternative.

If your child has access to the Portal, they can go online and listen to the The Slumber Party again if they choose to do so.

Communicate with your teacher that your child has watched both videos.

Assignment 2:Your child should complete the comprehension questions on pages 73 and 74. They can write their answers on a separate sheet of paper. Please list the page they are on, and you can label the bubbles a, b, or c, so it is easier to put on the answer page. They can also send a picture if that is an option for you.

April Reading LogWhen your child finishes their 10min or more of reading daily, they can fill in one cloud.

If you cannot print this, you can just keep a notebook page with a list of the books your child has read and send it to me as a picture or email when 30 lines have been filled in.

Parents please initial the cloud. You can take a picture of this when it is filled in and send a picture through Dojo or email.

Writing Assignment for the Week of April 20 th – April 24 th Objective:The students will write sentences using their imagination that include character traits for a stuffed animal.Character traits is teacher talk for the personality traits that characters display in stories.

ActivityYour child will pretend the stuffed animal has a personality.

Your child must name the stuffed animal. (Hint: This is important for next week’s assignment).

Page 13:  · Web viewThis is Callie the calico cat. Her best friend is Fluff. Callie likes to go on vacation to the beach. Callie likes the beach. Callie’s favorite game is tic tac toe

Your child will answer the following 5 questions……

*Who is best friends with your stuffed animal? Must have one or two BFFs. Your child is not allowed to be a best friend. No more

than 2 best friends. (Hint: This is important for next week’s writing assignment).

*Where does your stuffed animal like to go on vacation? Why?

*What is your stuffed animal’s favorite game? Why?No game with screens allowed.

*What is your stuffed animal’s favorite food? Why?

*What is your stuffed animal’s favorite thing to do outside? Why?Please have your child write as if this were a paragraph rather than numbering the questions and answering them. It should

sound like your child is telling a story about the character s/he is creating.

This is a good example of the type of writing we are expecting. This is Callie the calico cat. Her best friend is Fluff. Callie likes to go on vacation to the beach. She thinks the sound of the waves is relaxing. Callie’s favorite game is tic tac toe. She thinks it is easy

to win when she plays against Fluff. Callie’s favorite food is bananas. She likes the surprise inside when she peels them!

Callie likes to chase leaves when she is outside. It gives her lots of exercise especially on a windy day!

Page 14:  · Web viewThis is Callie the calico cat. Her best friend is Fluff. Callie likes to go on vacation to the beach. Callie likes the beach. Callie’s favorite game is tic tac toe

This is the type of writing we are NOT looking for…..This is Callie the calico cat. Her best friend is Fluff. Callie likes to

go on vacation to the beach. Callie likes the beach. Callie’s favorite game is tic tac toe. Callie likes tic tac toe. Callie’s

favorite food is bananas. Callie thinks bananas taste good. Callie likes to chase leaves outside. It is fun.

The biggest difference is the details in the answer to the why part of the question. In the example we do NOT want, the answer

part to the why question is simply…..she likes it….it tastes good…..it is fun. Of course, she likes things or tastes good or it’s

fun…..That’s why they are her favorite.

In the more detailed example, the answer to the why part of the question includes an answer that requires deeper thinking skills. The coolest part about it is that everything is made up, so as long

as the answer to the why part of the question makes sense, all you have to do is write it down!

Oh yeah……one more very important thing. Your answers cannot copy the examples. This means your stuffed animal is allowed to like the beach as a favorite vacation spot. But, you may not say

the waves are relaxing. You must come up with a different reason as to why the beach is the favorite vacation place. Nothing else should be copied…..no tic tac toe…..no bananas…..no chasing

leaves. Use your imagination!!!!!

We will be grading this week’s writing using the writing rubric below. We will fill it out in Word, take a picture of it, and send the

picture to you through Class Dojo.Descriptive Writing Rubric
