Log In

1. Go to https://engrade.com/bcps 2. Enter your BCPS username and password 3. Click Log In

Viewing Classes

The screen shot on the right is your dashboard, this is what you will see when you log in, it will show all of your classes

Grading Settings

To set the grade setting for your class

1. Click on Options Click on the 3rd option

down, Grade Settings

Grade Scale

2. Click on down arrow TEACHERS MUST SELECT BCPS 3-12

Scroll Down to assignment categories as shown below

3. Click Yes, for Weight Assignment Categories 4. Then enter in your categories 5. Then put in the weighted percentage6. This is OPTIONAL if you want to drop the lowest

score in each category for the students

Scroll Down to Options

Teachers have the ability to customize their grade book to fit their needs. Teachers can set the following options.

7. Sort Students, how do you want to sort students in grade book (last name, first name…)

8. Sort Assignments, how do you want to sort the assignments in the grade book? Date collected, entered, newest first, last

9. Rounding, do you want to round the grades?

10. Show percentages, do you want to show a student’s percentage in the grade book?

11. Click save setting when finished

Adding Assignments

To add assignments to the grade book

Log In Select a class

1. Click on New Assignment you can click on either one that is on the screen

It will take you to a new screen, below is what it will look like at the top of your screen

1. Enter the Assignment Name2. How many points the assignment is worth, if it is extra credit, put EC3. The due date4. Put the work in a category

Adding Assignments (continued)

More options will then appear on the same screen. From here teachers can:

Select students this assignment is for Select a standard Tag the standards this assignment

addresses (Optional this year) Give a description of the

assignment (students will see this) Attach worksheets or handouts Copy this assignment to other

classes, if you teach this class 4 times a day, you will not need to add it to each of the classes

You can hide the assignment from the students (only use if you are adding future assignments, or if you want to discuss with students before they see their grades

Add assignments to the calendar Add to class discussions and

students can discuss the assignment

Save assignment to add grades later, or scroll down and enter grades now. (See next section)

Entering Grades

Option 1

After you have added the assignment you can simply scroll down and begin entering the students grades.

o NOTE: Grade book will only recognize and calculate numbers, E and M

o E=Excused from assignment, will be calculated in students grade

o M=Missing, it will calculate as a zero in the students grade, this will allow it to show up on a missing assignments report and indicate to the students what the grade will be if they do not complete the assignment

Once finished, click on save assignment, it will take you back to the grade book for the class.

Option 2:

From the grade book screen for the class, find the assignment and begin entering the students grade.

Once you click out of the box, it will automatically recalculate the students grade

Entering Attachments to Assignments

Log In Select a class Click on Add Assignment Enter the assignment information1. Click on attach to get the drop down menu and click upload new file

After Clicking on Choose File, you will be able to select the file that you want to upload.

1. Click on the file you want to attach2. Then click open

3. Then scroll down and click save assignment or you can scroll down, enter the student’s grades and click on save assignment at the bottom of the page, once all grades have been entered

Assigning work to a group or individual students

With personalized learning for the students teachers may assign different work to different students. This grade book allows teachers to enter different work for different students, or groups of students

Follow the same steps to add an assignment, then

1. Click on Choose Students

A Pop up box will appear, like the one at the right

Student Group-if you have set student groups, you can select a group of students to assign the work to

2. Click on the down arrow next to students

A list of all the students will appear, place a check next to the student or students you would like to assign this work to

OPTION: If you are going to use these groups of students again, you can save the group and give it a name

Click on choose students when you are done Now this assignment will only be for those students

This will take you back to the main grade book screen for the class, and the students who are not assigned this work, it will show as N/A in the grade book

o If you make a mistake, you can always go back in and fix it

Tag Standards to an assignment

Tagging standards for assignments for the 2014-2015 school year is OPTIONAL for teachers. This is something that will be coming down the line, but not for the upcoming school year. As of right now, only the Common Core Standards are uploaded to the grade book. Science and Social Studies Standards will be coming. By tagging standards teachers, students, and parents will get a glimpse of student strengths and weaknesses.

To tag standards follow the steps of adding an assignment and click on more options

1. Click on Tag Standards

A Pop Up window will appear, clicking on the arrow will expand the standards and simply check the standards the assignment is addressing

To monitor how the students are doing, from the main grade book screen for the class, click on standards. It will list all of the standards that you have tagged and indicate how each student is doing. Listing the percentage the students have mastered and how they are doing on each standard

Create and assign a quiz

Log into the grade book You will get your main grade book screen1. Click on the class you want to create a quiz for

It will take you to your class2. On the panel on the left Click on Tests & Quizzes 3. Click on Create New Test to create your own test or

quiz.4. Or Click on Assign Test From Library

1. Give your test or quiz a title2. Indicate the subject3. Indicate the minimum grade level4. Indicate the maximum grade level

3 and 4 can be just putting the grade level this is for

5. Time Limit You can give a time limit

for the test or quiz, can be useful so the students do not have time to look up answers, especially if this is done at home

Default Display options

These are additional options to have more control over the test or quiz the students are taking, some of the options like highlight text, use a calculator, cross out incorrect answers are included as these are options that students have when they complete the PARCC test

6. Default answer viewing. Allow the students to view their answers, view answers after they take the test or quiz, or view their answers once the test or quiz is closed

Once you have set everything, click SUBMIT and you are ready to start adding questions

1. Click on Add Question2. A new screen will appear and you

can select the type of question Multiple Choice Multiple Choice Multi-Select True/False Instructions Only

3. Type the question for the students to answer

4. Put in the answer choices for the students

5. Indicate the correct answer by putting a check next to the answer

6. You have the option of including a rationale for the correct and incorrect answers to assist the students

7. You have the option of creating a passage for the students to read to answer the question

8. Indicate how many points the question is worth

9. Click save answer when you are finished

Repeat until you have entered all of the questions you would like on the test or quiz

Create and assign a quiz (continued)

When you have completed the test or quiz, you can preview the test or quiz.

Iit is time to assign the test or quiz for the students. Click on Assign to Class

Scheduling

You can indicate when the quiz is open for students to complete

When you click on Schedule available times it will give you options of the day and time to schedule for the students

All of the other options are what you have set already, it is double checking that is what you want. Once the test or quiz is assigned, it cannot be changed.

1. If this test or quiz is for the entire class you do not need to do anything. However, if you want this quiz for selected students, like a test or quiz for standards students or students with accommodations, you can select the individual or group of students you want this test or quiz to be for

2. Click on Also Assign to and you can assign to multiple classes if you teach more than one section

When you create a test or quiz, you can share it with others.

Click on the gear A drop down list will appear, Click on share authority Place a check next to everyone

you want to share the test or quiz with

NOTE: This will also give them full authorization over the test or quiz, including edit, add, and delete. If you are collaborating with other teachers on a test or quiz, create the test or quiz, share authority and once all of the changes have been made assign to the students/.

In tests and quizzes page you can monitor the students’ progress by clicking on View Results

The screen below will come up and you see the students scores, when they started the test or quiz, how long they took to complete the test or quiz

Teachers can also click on Scoresheet to look at the test or quiz for each student

Click on Clear to clear the quiz and have the students retake

After the students have finished the test or quiz, click on Save to Grade book and the scores with automatically be uploaded in the grade book with their scores.

Click on Answer Grid and get a break down of the test or quiz

See the entire class grades at a glance, and even get a break down by question to quickly identify questions the students struggled with, teachers can then target standards or concepts they need to go over again with the students

Messages

If you want to send a message to students, parents, or other teachers, you can do that from here. If someone sent you a message it will also let you know here

Sending Messages

Click on Messages Click on Compose

Compose your message, just like it is an email, with a subject, message, and attachments

Click on the “Contacts” icon on the right to see everyone, or just start typing a name

A [P] next to a student’s name indicates Parent

Discussions Assignments that are posted can be added to the discussion board for the students to comment on, or teachers can create discussion topics for the students.

Click on one of your classes On the left panel, Click on Discussions

On the next page you will get a list of all the discussions. To create a new discussion Click New Discussion You will then see a page similar to the

one below

1. Give your discussion a title2. Type the discussion topic or question3. Here you can upload a file if you

want, maybe you want the students to read something and then respond?

4. Is the discussion for the entire class? You may have the students in

groups and each group is doing a different discussion
