“Desert Island Discs”The rules are simple: Choose EIGHT recordings, ONE book, and ONE luxury item that you would keep if you were stranded on a desert island! This is about learning to explore your own musical tastes, the tastes of others, and getting to know your colleagues. This idea comes from a very famous radio show that started back in 1942 to entertain the forces, and continues today as both a broadcast and a podcast.

During the completion of this project, there will be the following opportunities to develop your literacy and numeracy:

Reading and interpreting song lyrics (literacy) Carrying out and interpreting research into artists (literacy) Working with song lengths (numeracy) Time management (numeracy)

Your Tasks

1. ResearchYou will research your eight chosen music tracks – find out some information about them, what they’re about, tell us about the artist who wrote/performed them. What do these songs mean to you? Tell us some interesting musical features and why they’re your favourites. You will present this as a presentation to the rest of the group (don’t forget your book and luxury item!), and submit notes and research carried out as powerpoint slide notes or as a separate blog.

2. Development

As part of a band, you need to put forward ONE of your favourite tracks, which you will learn to perform either in its original form, or you can cover it in a different style. You will need to not only document your progress as you learn how to play the parts, but will need to reflect on being open minded as everyone else will also put forward a track! This is your chance to learn to appreciate a RANGE of different musical tastes, and importantly performance styles. You will document this development in a diary or a blog.

3. Performance / PresentationYou will perform your band’s set, which will contain tracks chosen by each member of the band. Each person will introduce their chosen track to the audience.

4. EvaluationYou will evaluate the success of your performance, and also summarise what new knowledge and skills you have developed through the process.
