Broadchurch (2013) Contextual Study – Week 3

Broadchurch is television crime drama produced by Kudos Film and Television that was first broadcast on the 4th of match 2013. The first series of

Broadchurch follows the story of the death of a young boy named Daniel Latimer and features the well-known actor David Tennant.

At the time of the production of the first series for Broadchurch, Social media was the main focus in the news and was being widely spoken about in both

positive and negative ways, this is highlighted in the first episode of Broadchurch in which a journalist named Oliver Stevens publishes the not yet

revealed identity of the young boy on social media and the effects of his actions are shown on each of the characters. This demonstrates the danger

and damages that can be caused by social media, although it demonstrates the negative points of social media, it also demonstrates the negative role of the

press in these situations and how intrusive and relentless they can be in order to get a big story.

Another subject of the news at the time of Broadchurch’s production was the 2007 abduction of Madeleine McCann, during the year of 2013 the police revealed a number of ‘E-Fits’ of a potential suspect, this sparked a global

reinterest in the McCann case, this has inspired the storyline to Broadchurch and gives an opportunity to experience what it’s like to be in involved in a

situation like this. Broadchurch also focuses on the conspiracies of the McCann disappearance and keeps the killer’s identity a secret whilst giving a reason to

suspect each character, including the parents.

Whilst Broadchurch used current events to gain its fan base it also gained the viewership of fans of David Tennant and Olivia Coleman who both have

exceptionally large fan bases in the United Kingdom, with David Tennant

having played the main role in Doctor Who. Although David Tennant is a huge success in the U.K , the producers have still carefully assessed his suitability for the role of D.I Alec Hardy , a rough, stubborn detective with a past failure that

still haunts him , which he portrays well.

Taking all the above into accounts , in order for the plot of Broadchurch to give the audience the desired effects and feelings , the story needed to be set in the

perfect location which resulted in a sleepy village in which its apparent that everybody knows each other and word spreads quickly , which usually appears

innocent with its low crime rate.

Own Choice Contextual Study – Week 4Broadchurch Episode 2 , Series 1 – Contextual analysis , Own Scene

For this particular task we were asked to choose a scene of our choice from a British film or Television show. I chose to follow up on our initial Broadchurch analysis and therefore chose a scene from episode 2.

The scene I chose features two characters, Chloe, who is the sister of the deceased boy Daniel and her boyfriend Dean. The scene opens and takes place on a quiet beach in the evening , with no one around , this immediately shows a sense of privacy in what they are going to say among each other , the scene focuses on the confiscation of Chloe’s boyfriends drugs in which the police discovered and seized whilst searching the house of Daniel Latimer . throughout the discussion of this topic, Chloe is very distant and shows little to no consideration or anxiety towards this potential issue and continues to reassure her boyfriend.

During 2013, the year of Broadchurch’s production, there was a significant increase in teenage drug dealing cases being broadcast across the national media, this caused a visible response from both the government but also a large amount of media production companies who used this topic as inspiration for characters and story lines. This is supported by an article written by The Daily Mirror in early 2013 and is titled “20 Child Drug Dealers arrested every week” and highlights a significant increase in cases across small towns and villages in remote areas very much like Broadchurch, the article also reports on the pressure and discomfort these teenagers will put on loved ones in order to protect themselves which is clearly scene in this scene from Broadchurch.

Figure 1 - Den of Geek - Chloe and Dean

Jenni, 22/10/17,
But the context of episode 2 is the same as for episode 1? Context is the whole programme, it doesn’t really change from one episode to the next. But as this episode does bring in teenage drug taking, you have gotten away with it! Lucky!
Page 9: WordPress.com · Web viewUnit 10 LO2 2.1 Demonstrate independence in decision making in planning and developing creative solutions. Unit 10 LO2 2.2 Select appropriate media and processes

In this scene, Dean seems almost outraged at Chloe’s disregard for the situation despite her bereavement which shows the extent he’s willing to go to in order to protect his reputation and innocence which is seen commonly in the modern day and has been addressed by a number of different television dramas across the world.
