Who Am I?

Within the following section, I shall be exploring how my personal experiences and interests have affected and developed my interests, focuses, and skills in relation to games development; while discussing the timeline of my practical skills and future development of such.

Background -As the middle child of three, and only son, born into a family with high expectations and successful relatives, I found myself to have a great deal of pressure on me to achieve highly in almost everything, be it sports or academia. From this, I can see that I have developed my own high intellectual standards for myself, placing great value and interest on subjects such as physics, mathematics, and philosophy. As a result, I have achieved highly in the areas of my focus and become distinctly learned in such areas. This has allowed me to develop into a distinctly independent individual, placing little value on the opinions and values of others. However, I have found this to have resulted in me developing a significantly negative view of myself and much of the world, with my self-perpetuated pressure to achieve and do well causing me to constantly feel as if I haven’t done enough. As a result of this, there have been many times, most notably during my 6th form years, where I have grown incredibly depressed and disinterested in much of what I used to enjoy. Coming out of this following the end of my time in 6th form, I have developed a healthier mind-set that has allowed me to explore more creative areas of my interest within games design, such as 3D modelling, sound design, etc.

Interests/ Influences –

Music: From a very early age I was exposed to large range of music, ranging from classical to heavy metal, with my father acting as the greatest influence of my perception and reception of such. This cultivated a distinct interest and appreciation for music in general, and for finer facets such as audio engineering and music theory. A few examples of the most influential bands/ musicians I have encountered can be seen to be (but not limited to) ‘Type O Negative’, ‘Artillery’, ‘Giuseppe Tartini’, and ‘Paganini’. From this, I have been able to develop technical skills related to my course, e.g. audio editing/ recording, while also exploring more creative aspects, e.g. audio design and binaural audio.

Physics: From an early stage of my formal education, I found a distinct interest in the mechanics of the world and how they are explained, expressed, and utilised within the science of physics. The subject developed my mathematical and analytical skills to a significant extent, leading me to study the subject extensively outside of my formal education. From this, I have been able to significantly develop my self-teaching and research skills, as well as develop an acute understanding of mechanics etc.

Philosophy:Branching from both my deep interest in physics and my position as a distinctly independent and analytical individual, I have over the last five years cultivated a growing interest in general and academic philosophy. Here I have been able to significantly develop my understanding of the human condition and existence, allowing me to better identify, interpret, and understand such topics as morality, religion, and determinism. A few quintessential philosophers that have greatly

As a result, I believe I have become a more stable and confident individual that is not burdened or restricted by the common narrow perspective of living. In my own words, I would describe my world view as being a ‘Rationally Sceptic Existential Nihilist’.

Video-Games:For much of my life, video-games have acted as my primary past-time activity between all other interests, presenting an engaging and enjoyable escape from my day-to-day. In addition to this, I have been able to explore how other interests of mine, such as audio design, 3-D modelling, and writing, are applied within a commercial release, providing a credible industry reference and standard from which to develop and inform my own productions.

Favourite Media Product:One distinct production that can be seen to have greatly influenced my own style is the October 2012 release ‘Dishonored’ from ‘Arkane Studios’. Everything, from the art style and writing to the gameplay mechanics and level design, presents a clear example of my favourite style and genre of video-games. The manipulation of light and dark combined with the congruent themes within the storyline of the game and complimentary character and environmental design resulted in a deep and engaging experience that presented many of the core reasons I enjoy playing and developing video-games. In addition to this, the franchise presents a unique combination of historical late 1800’s London/ Edinburgh with steam and diesel punk elements that constitutes what is likely my favourite art/ setting style, as it blends both my interest in history and retro-futuristic technology. Moreover, both games can be seen to feature distinctly detailed mechanics and level design which I find incredibly engaging, as it is all seamlessly incorporated naturally into the visual design of the environments.

History:For the majority of my life I have a significant interest in learning as much of world history as possible. This interest started with watching documentaries on the Roman Empire and reading corresponding books. From this starting point, I expanded my scope in both directions, looking at early to late medieval history and going back as far as the early ‘cradles of civilisation’, e.g. Egypt, Mesopotamia, and the Indus Valley. Although I never particularly studied this subject during my formal education, I have been able to develop a distinct understanding of the development of human civilisation of which works in conjunction with my other interest, such as philosophy. Overall, I believe this interest has allowed me to place myself within context of the wider history of my country and species, such that I am more aware and settled with

Unit 11my relative insignificance – allowing me to live freely and without strict expectations of myself.

Experiences: Over the course of my life so far, I have had a number of significant experiences that have influenced and/ or develop me as a person. One such experience would be the eight years spent within the UK Scouts, of which aided the development of my communication and team work skills in addition to survival training and independence. Following this, I spent two years in the Deal detachment of Army Cadets. This provided me with an opportunity to further develop practical skills such as shooting, survival, and communication; while providing experience within a structured and disciplined environment. A combination of these two experiences can be seen to have developed my interest in military history and technology, in conjunction with my significant interest in history.

Another such significant experience can be seen to be my formal education. During this continuing period of my life I have had numerous opportunities to further my knowledge base and understanding of the world and its contents, while developing practical and social skills. For example, I have met many interesting people whom have introduced new ideas and subjects to me that have significantly influenced my interests and focus. In addition to this, I have been able to develop strong relationships with the few friends I made while at school, providing a stream of communication to share ideas and engage in common activities, e.g. video-games. During my secondary education, I was able to have one of my short stories published officially within a short stories collection, providing some validation of my writing ability, a skill and activity I greatly enjoy.

Furthermore, as previously stated I grew up in a family with distinctly successful relatives. This provided me with clear role models from which to learn from. In addition to this, I was able to learn valuable general, life, and industry knowledge from people with first-hand experience, significantly influencing my own decisions and interests. Moreover, this provided me with the confidence to achieve highly as I could see that previous generations of my family on both sides have been greatly successful in many distinct areas, ranging from military service and clandestine work to science research/ development and politics.

Ambitions:Regarding my personal ambitions, I wouldn’t say that there is anything specific that I have a great burning desire to achieve or obtain. However, there is a number of things of which I would like to achieve if it comes around. For example, I would like to have a full-length book published, achieve a 1st at university, produce my own instrumental album, and develop and commercially release my own video-game/ miniatures game. I can be seen to be working towards achieving these goals, some slower than others, but I place no imperative on any, such that I will not intrinsically change or be significantly affected if I do not do so; however, doing so would be distinctly rewarding.

Myers BriggsThe purpose of this task was to identify the personal characteristics of our being such that I am thus able to determine my personal strengths and weaknesses. This allows me to better understand myself through a new perspective and identify the areas of my work that I need to improve upon, such as organisation.Regarding this test, the theory behind it can be explained as being a reductionists view that a selection arbitrary questions can be utilised to determine and categorise an individual’s personality, providing general statements of characteristics that can be applied to a large group of people. In addition to this, the theory behind these claims to be able to accurately identify and explain an individual’s personality ‘type’ simply though someone’s answers to a set number of questions, ignoring many extraneous variables of which have significant effect not only on how some answers but why they answer. When answering the questions of the personality test, I ensured that I answered as objectively and honestly as possible, sometimes going back to change an answer after thinking on it longer.

The personality test produced a moderately accurate calculation of my personality in comparison to how I perceive myself, however compared to how others perceive me the personality test was distinctly different, with others seeing myself as more ‘observant’ and ‘prospecting’. In completing this personality test, I have found that I am far more ‘judging’ in my perception of myself and the wider world than I had previously considered. I find personality tests such as these to be significantly reductionist in their perception and interpretation of what makes an individual behave and think the way they do; such that it assumes that a person’s ‘personality’ is an inherent and quantifiable aspect of them, ignoring wider influencing factors such as determinism and other psychological and external factors that significantly inform the way an individual behaves and exists as such.

Unit 11With the information gained from this personality test, I have been able to identify that organisation is an area in which I need to improve. From this, I can take measures, such as organising project timetables, to improve in this area and distinctly improve my personal life and academic/ professional career. From my own opinion and corroborated by the results of the personality test, I can identify a specific area in which I would need to significantly improve in order to further my personal and professional progression. This area can be seen to be collaborative team work and communication, areas in which I am distinctly less effective compared to others such faculties. Henceforth, I shall put effort in to improving significantly within this area through team-based tasks and collaborative works, such that I can develop my ability to work effectively within a team environment – a greatly valued and requires attribute within professional work environments, especially in media production.Following my own completion of this personality test I had one of my peers carry out the test answering as if they were me. This provided me with an example of how others around me perceive me. My peer obtained the result personality type of ‘Virtuoso’. The primary personality traits of such are as follows:

- Introverted- Observant- Thinking- Prospecting- Assertive

Overall, I believe that the result my peer obtained was relatively accurate to my character, however, there were distinct differences. For example, my peers result shows them to see me as being more organised and decisive in my planning etc. then I believe myself to be. In addition to this, m peers result indicates they see me to be less decisive and judging than I see myself to be, a distinct difference.

I believe that many people see me significantly different to how I perceive myself as I hold distinctly different views and beliefs to the majority of the population, such that many of my traits/ actions would be misinterpreted as a result of this distinct difference. The result my peer obtained can be seen to be moderately congruent with my personal result. However, there is a difference in that my peer saw me as more ‘observant’ than ‘intuitive’ and more ‘prospecting’ than ‘judging’. Thus, presenting two distinct areas in which I viewed differently than how I perceive myself. From the result obtained by my peer in respect to their perception of my personality, I can say that I learned some interesting points in general but no decisive points regarding my own personality. After carrying out the same personality test from the position of my peer, I found that we both view each other very similarly, with us both getting nearly identical results. In addition to this, I found that my peers see me to be more organised than I see myself to be, of which is an interesting difference.

Unit 11Overall, I believe that this task on conducting a personality test has provided an opportunity to see what a widely accepted system would categorise me as, and how I am perceived by my peers. However, I believe that I have learned very little about myself in completing this personality test as there was little for the test results to tell me that I had not already told it or knew myself; regardless the task as a whole was interesting and provided some interesting information regarding my outward reception and some areas in which I could improve myself.

Above can be seen the results from the same personality test. As you can see, compared to the previous results seen below there have been a couple distinctive changes. These changes include scoring distinctly higher on ‘Introverted’, ‘Prospective’, and ‘Assertive’. These changes could reflect how the experiences of my time on this course has influenced me. I feel that these changes are not too significant and do not greatly affect how I feel or the quality of my work.

Dream Job Role: Lead Game DesignerExample:

Additional Credentials/ Experience: Significant work in industry within notable companies, in addition to numerous self-produced projects. Significant experience in other fields beyond job role, e.g. coding, design, and animation. Degree/ qualifications within supporting fields, e.g. psychology, English literature, etc.CV Comparison: Looking at my own CV in comparison to the above example and additional credentials/ experience, there are numerous areas in which I can strive to improve in order to achieve this goal. For example, I lack a significant university degree, experience working and releasing my own productions, experience working within the industry, etc. However, it can be noted that I have made significant progress in moving towards a similar CV to the example above, with me developing my graphical, 3D, animation, and sound design skills, achieving a distinction in my first year and working towards another distinction this year. How will I Achieve this? –To achieve this goal, I will be attending a BSc. Computer Games Arts university course starting this September, thus, providing the distinct opportunity to both greatly improving my technical skills, across everything from illustration to scripting, and obtaining an industry relevant degree. This will allow me to go on to work on my own productions and work experience within the industry. Moreover, I will develop my own brand and style across my professional social media accounts, networking with other practitioners and developing a relationship with peers and employers.

Unit 11• Internships

Internships propose an opportunity for individuals to hold a trainee position within a company or organisation, through which they will gain experience working within a professional environment. Within the games industry these positions are typically held within the quality assurance (QA) department of a studio, providing entry level industry experience, with which an individual has an advantage in gaining a full-time position at that or another company.

• Work ExperienceWork experience is typically provided to students that wish to gain a hands-on insight into the nature and work style of a particular industry or business. These allow the individual to properly inform their decisions in regard to their education and future career choices.

• NetworkingNetworking describes the act of engaging with and exchanging contact information with other people, typically within the same or connected careers, in order to develop strong industry contacts. This aids the individual in furthering their career opportunities by gaining exposure and developing relations with other individuals already within or above in the industry. In relation to the games industry, this can be greatly effective during conventions or similar events, such that you can directly communicate and sell yourself to people within the industry, allowing you to develop contacts that can get your proverbial foot in the door.• References

A reference is a testimony from an individual whom has personal experience with yourself, either casually or professionally, in which they provide information regarding the content of your character and professional abilities in relation to the position being applied for. These provide a third-party that can provide critical information regarding yourself that greatly aids in selling yourself to the employer. In relation to the games industry, a reference could come from within the industry and provide a critical distinction between yourself and other competing for the position, allowing the games studio to recruit with a greater understanding of the individual they hire as the risk is far less.

• Presentation of CV and portfolioWhen approaching a position, especially within the games industry, it is greatly important how you construct, layout, and present your CV and portfolio. Regarding your CV, this is one of the first and perhaps the most important document an employer will see of you. Therefore, this document should be professionally laid out, easy to read, provide all relevant educational and experience information and personal details. Your CV is, in the majority of situations, the first piece of documentation about yourself you send to an employer and must sell you as the best

Page 15: hjdowergamesdev.files.wordpress.com  · Web viewUnit 11. Who Am I? Figure 1 Who Am I? Mind Map. Figure 2 Who Am I? Mind Map. Within the following section, I shall be exploring how

Unit 11applicant for the position, such that you can include a reference, information on any internships or work experience, and contact/ engagements with the industry you have had. Ina addition to this, building a professional portfolio is significantly important, especially within creative fields such as games development. This portfolio can be linked in with your CV in the form of a link/ QR code and be used to quickly provide a representation of your ability while networking or at an interview. A portfolio should contain only the best pieces of work, displaying your ability within your field, with typical formats including such websites as Adobe’s ‘Behance’.

• Professional email and social media accounts At many points within a professional environment, such as application, interview, and general work, it is distinctly important that you posses and maintain a professional e-mail address and some form relevant social media account. A professional e-mail is the name and address you will be contacted through throughout your career, therefore it is critical this is a representative and safe address, excluding numbers, unnecessary special characters, and nicknames etc. The same rules apply for a social media account, while also holding the responsibility to ensure everything shared, linked to, and posted is of a professional standard and ethnicity as this can be linked to your work and will not be tolerated if it could be seen to negatively affect the company you represent.

Social Media Platforms

Twitter - (Twitter Inc., 2018)Twitter is an extremely popular public and private messaging service that allows individuals/ groups to follow (view the posts of) other individuals/ groups. In relation to the games industry, I have chosen to use the twitter platform as it allows me to stay informed from multiple sources on industry related news and network with other individuals within the industry, either professionally (learning of job vacancies/ establishing professional relationships/ contacts) or casually (sharing work and ideas). In addition to this, this social media provides me a wide-reaching platform from which to promote my work and engage with my audience directly and publicly. My Account: https://twitter.com/DowerHarley

ArtStation - (Ballistiq Digital Inc., 2018)ArtStation is a more professional social media platform on which industry workers and aspiring creatives from a wide range of disciplines can share their work and exchange comments and ideas. In relation to the games industry, I have chosen this platform as it provides a more concentrated audience of viewers that can give constructive professional feedback on my shared work. In addition to this, it provides an effective platform to host my work and import into my portfolio, while allowing me a personal

Behance - (Adobe Systems, 2018)Behance is Adobe’s professional portfolio platform that allows you to create custom projects and portfolio. In relation to the games industry, I have chosen this platform to produce my professional portfolio on as it is a reputable sight that has a strong user base, such that the authenticity of my portfolio benefits from such. In addition to this, I can receive feedback, general messages, and networking connection through this platform. My Account: https://www.behance.net/HArleyDowe406b

EventsOver the course of the last two years, I have had the opportunity to greatly benefit from a number of events. Most notably, I was able to be a part of the organisation and running of a booth at a charity event. Through this, I gained experience following a timetable of events and working independently effectively while providing an attraction in support of a charity. In relation to the games industry, this experience has allowed me to develop my organisation skills while working both independently and as a team; of which is extremely critical when developing video-games.

Work ExperienceIn addition to the aforementioned events, I have conducted a series of work experience events. Most notably, I participated in bucket collecting for the Demelza Hospice within the Canterbury high-street. From this I gained experience representing an organisation appropriately in public and carrying out my personal responsibilities professionally. In relation to the games industry, this has aided me in developing my approach to public engagement and professional representation of a company; critical when working for any company within the industry, improving my employability. Future ProgressionFollowing the completion of this course, I am planning to attend a three-year BSc in Computer Games Arts at University. To be able to enrol with this degree course I have been working to the best of my ability and ensuring that I take as many opportunities to improve my skills as possible. More specifically, I will need to achieve a minimum grade of a merit at the end of this course to be able to attend this degree course. When applying for university I used the tools provided my UCAS’s applicant system to

Unit 11browse and select the desired course. In addition to this, I have attended many open days and interviews in order to gain a greater understanding of which university/ course would be better for me. Following university, during which I am planning to achieve as highly as I can and develop industry standard technical ability, I will be seeking employment either with a pre-existing studio (large or indie) or establishing my own indie studio. For either of these options, I will be required to develop my technical skills to the best of my ability and build a professional presence within the industry and network effectively. EP PitchPrior to conducting the majority of my project within unit 13, I created a PowerPoint presentation that I used during my extended project pitch to my lecturers. Pitches such as this are distinctly important within the games industry, as they allow the individual/ group to effectively organise, present, and convey their conceptual and design ideas. In addition to this, a design team are able to then provide constructive feedback that can be utilised to develop and adapt their ideas and designs. Below can be seen the pitch I gave for my extended project:

End of Year ShowFollowing the completion of my extended project, I produced a series of relevant promotional materials, such as a business card, poster, video, and bio. These were presented alongside my production piece at a college hosted public event in which people were invited to view our work. Shows such as these are distinctly important as a practitioner, especially within a creative industry, such that they provide a significant opportunity to not only showcase my work publicly, gaining
