What Are We Learning?

Reading-We are learning about how information is organized in nonfiction in order to understand the main information and messages the author is trying to tell us.         -compare and contrast        -problem and solution        -chronological order        -main idea and supporting details

We are also reading narrative nonfiction and thinking about the literary techniques the author is using to tell us the message        -imagery        -word choice        -figurative language

What you can do at home:-Make sure your child is reading 20-30 minutes on a daily basis-Ask your child what they are reading….        *What are you thinking about while you read?        *Tell me about a character in your story, how are they changing?

Writing-Students just finished writing their persuasive papers, focusing on a topic they were passionate about, developing a thesis and supporting it with details!

We are now working on our narrative nonfiction pieces. We are reading narrative nonfiction books in class to help us learn how to turn facts into scenes!

Math-We are just about to finish up Unit 4 on Multiplying and Dividing Decimals! The students are practicing using real world examples. The students will have an assessment on December 6.

We will start Unit 5 on Adding and Subtracting Fractions on December 8.

What you can do at home:

Each night, your student should be reviewing either:

· Multiplication Facts

· Fraction-Decimal Equivalents

· Review recently sent home classwork

· Practice with real world problems in the grocery store

Advanced Math-We have been working on learning all about integers!  We’ve learned what integers are, and are now working on performing operations with integers.

Our Unit 4 test is December 13th and our E-cart test is December 18th.  Please note that we will do the entire math E-cart in one day.

What you can do at home:

Each night your student should be practicing math for 10 minutes.  They can:

· Go on IXL (make sure they are doing 6th grade math)

· Practice converting between fractions, decimals and percents

· Practice problems with integers (-4 x 6)

· Practice multiplying and dividing fractions

Science- We are learning about the ocean this quarter! The students have done many experiments to explore models of the ocean. Ask your student to explain:

· About warm and cold water in the ocean

· How salt varies in the ocean

· How pollution moves throughout the ocean

Coming up in December/January, we will be reviewing 4th grade Weather and Beyond! Ask your student to:

· List the planets in order from largest to smallest

· List the planets from closest to the sun to furthest away

· Talk about the weather and what you notice each day

What you can do at home:-Ask students to bring home their interactive notebook.-Ask students to tell you about what they learned in science that day.

AAP-Students are experiencing differentiated and challenging reading activities which incorporate the following reading skills-Synthesizing-Analyzing-Critiquing-Paraphrasing-Cause and Effect-Consequences and Implications

Reading passages connect to our science units along with our units of study in reading (characters, critical literacy-nonfiction)

We thank you for your continued support in your child’s success this school year!
