President’s MessageSpring is finally here (according to the calendar) even though you wouldn't know it by the weather--BRRRR. Nancy Jones did a great job of organizing the Garden Cleanup - she had some big shoes to fill (Tracy's). We had a good turnout and everyone had fun. I want to recognize and say thank you to the following folks who came out to help Nancy and I;

Kent Walton, Kyle Jones, Connie Holt, Jean Bryant, Pat Simmons, & Meg Swecker. When Jean and I attended the Roanoke Council of Garden Clubs meeting we couldn't believe the number of folks who came up to us and commented how beautiful our garden is. Makes you feel good doesn't it?

We have a lot of exciting events coming up, starting with our Spring Auction and perennial swap in April, Plants for Members and another perennial swap in May, and Plant Sale in June (check Calendar for dates). Looking forward to warmer weather or at least the wind dying down!

Vice President’s MessageWe’ve been hard at work determining the hybridizers and selecting the plants for the upcoming Plants For Members distribution in May 2013. We have completed most of the selections, and have received word back from the four selected hybridizers – Jamie Gossard, Stan & Bonnie Holley, Dan Hansen, and John Kinnebrew. We’ve received confirmation of delivery on the plant selections, with the exception of 10 additional Tets from Jamie Gossard that will be his choice when he digs for us.

Mom and I have requested a website to hold the BRADS Plants For Members information (ONLY the Plants for Members info, not the entire BRADS website!!), and it is now set up and active, and contains the plants that will be available for the May Distribution. You can visit the BRADS P4M website and see what we’ve done at: www.daylilyfans.com/bradsHope you enjoy what’s been done!!!Angie

Meeting Minutes

January 12, 2013

The meeting was called to order by A. L. Bryant, President following a potluck lunch. Minutes from the December 8th meeting were distributed by e-mail; there were no changes. There were no changes and Carol Sarginger made a motion that they be approved; Kent Walton seconded the motion. Motion carried.

June Avis distributed copies of the 4thQ Financials which showed a year-end bank balance of $19,167. A proposed 2013 Budget had been distributed by e-mail; however, during the BRADS Board meeting held earlier on Saturday, the income from “Kroger Cares” was increased to $1,000, and the “Plants for Members” budget was raised to $2,500. Pat Simmons made a motion to accept the revised budget and Elnora Stubbs seconded the motion; motion carried.

First Vice President

Meg Swecker gave a presentation of the proposed BRADS 2013 Calendar of Meetings and Events. Following discussions on the various events and some minor changes, Carol Sarginger moved that the calendar be approved; Pat Simmons seconded the motion. The approved calendar will be distributed to members by e-mail.

June Avis and Meg Swecker are in the process of updating the brochure that is given to prospective members. Work is also being done on the “New Member” package.

Second Vice President

Carol Sarginger and Angie Bowald reported that they are is in the process of getting suggestions for the Plants For Members hybridizers for this year; if anyone has a suggestion, they should let them know by mid-February. Carol also asked if our club would be interested in joining with the Charlottesville club to have Petit come in March 2014 (expenses would be split between the two clubs). Carol made a motion to go forward with the proposal; Pat Simmons seconded. Motion carried.

Old Business

At our September meeting members agreed that a plaque will be placed in the Hospice garden in Bedford which recognizes Dr. & Mrs. Wente’s gift of daylilies to the facility. At today’s meeting, Elnora Stubbs announced that, due to financial reasons, the hospice is not opening at this time. If the facility opens later, BRADS will provide a plaque for the garden.

New Business

A. L. gave an update from the BRADS Board meeting held earlier:

-the By-Laws will be reviewed and updated by the Board and then presented to members for approval

-the following committee chairs were appointed: Newsletter (Pat Simmons); Kitchen setup/clean up (Kyle Jones); Annual Plant Sale: (Nancy Jones); Display garden maintenance (Nancy Jones). All members are asked to help (volunteer) with these ‘jobs’.

A.L. asked that if any member has request for a project or event that would be funded by the club (and is not budgeted), to give him notice two weeks’ prior to the business meeting.

A.L. proposed that the club buy ‘Santa Pack’ tickets at the RCGC Holiday House and use any prizes won as door prizes at our Christmas party. Elnora Stubbs made a motion to proceed with the plan, and Angie Bowald seconded; motion carried.

Members were reminded that dues for 2013 should be paid by January 31.

Members were also reminded to use their ‘Kroger Cares’ cards; A. L. has purchased additional cards and has them available for anyone who wants one.

The next meeting will be on April 13 when we will have a business meeting, perennial exchange, and Spring Auction.

Meeting was adjourned at 1:45 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Jean Bryant, Secretary

A new edition to the newsletter from our members is space for Tried and True recipes that have been brought to the BRADS business meetings. Below please find recipes that have been asked for by members. Please enjoy them and use them as needed. LOL!! If any member has a recipe that they would like to share, please send them to me.

DOUGH2 cans refrigerated biscuits (buttermilk style)½ cup flour¼ powdered sugar

Set biscuits out to get close to room temp. Mix sugar and flour together and use to coat flat surface for rolling out biscuits.

FILLING5 yellow delicious or red delicious apples, peeled, cored and sliced thinly¼ cup water½ cup brown sugar1 tsp cinnamon½ tsp of nutmeg½ tsp vanilla1 tbsb cornstarch & ¼ cup water

Place water, sugar, vanilla, spices and sliced apples in a heavy sauce pan. Cook over medium heat until apples are soft. Dissolve corn starch in water and then stir into hot apple mixture, continue to cook until thickened. Remove from heat and allow to cool. Or you can use any canned fruit filling or applebutter

TOPPING

Spray butter or ½ stick butter melted¼ cup brown sugar, ¼ cup powdered sugar, 1 tbsp of cinnamon

Roll out each biscuit to about ¼” thick, place about 2 tbsp of filling to one side of center, moisten edges and fold one edge over filling and press with a fork to seal. Deep fry until golden brown; turning once. (I deep fry mine, but you can pan fry them too. I set the deep fryer at 350 and try to cook each pie about 2 ½ minutes one each side). Remove from fryer and place on cooling rack or paper towels. Spray or brush with butter and sprinkle with, sugars and cinnamon (I mixed the sugars and cinnamon together and keep it stored in an old spice bottle that has a sprinkle top just for this purpose).
