Fall 2013 Dear NOPEC member, We can’t believe it’s already fall! It was such a nice and cool summer, which we know helped keep our energy bills low. We’re all probably wondering the same thing: will it be a cold winter this year? Plan ahead with some of our favorite fall tips to save on energy: Replace your furnace filters and save energy when it’s time to start heating your house. Get ready to seal up the windows with plastic covers to reduce expensive drafts. You can even add caulk or weather-stripping to your windows if they are particularly drafty. Give your dryer exhaust hose a clean to see noticeable improvement in your drying efficiency. Let the sun heat your home during the day. You could leave the window shades open to let the light in during the day and close them at night to keep the chill out. Turn down the temperature on your water heater. We keep ours at 120 degrees and it saves energy and our skin from getting dried out. We hope you enjoy this fall and are looking forward to Halloween as much as we are. We’re all planning to dress up as “energy vampires” (appliances that suck down energy, even when turned off) – SCARY! In the spirit of saving energy and being festive for Halloween, it could also be fun to turn out all the lights and electronics in the house, turn on some flashlights and tell spooky stories with the kids.

Fall 2013

Dear NOPEC member,

We can’t believe it’s already fall! It was such a nice and cool summer, which we know helped keep our energy bills low. We’re all probably wondering the same thing: will it be a cold winter this year? Plan ahead with some of our favorite fall tips to save on energy:

• Replace your furnace filters and save energy when it’s time to start heating your house.

• Get ready to seal up the windows with plastic covers to reduce expensive drafts. You can even add caulk or weather-stripping to your windows if they are particularly drafty.

• Give your dryer exhaust hose a clean to see noticeable improvement in your drying efficiency.

• Let the sun heat your home during the day. You could leave the window shades open to let the light in during the day and close them at night to keep the chill out.

• Turn down the temperature on your water heater.
