January , 2017 In MATH ,we worked with fractions and mixed numbers. We learned strategies, such as modeling multiplication; addition; and subtraction. We still used common denominators as we did last month, however we only used that for adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers. When multiplying fractions, we kept the original denominators, and multiplied it like any other whole number. In addition, we also learned rules when multiplying fractions and mixed numbers such as the following(P.S. not all rules will be listed): -When multiplying fraction less than one, the answer will be less than one and will be less than either fraction. -When multiplying a whole number and a mixed number, the product will be greater than the mixed number. -When multiplying 2 mixed numbers, the product will be greater than both factors In SCIENCE , we did a main study of the ocean and the contents that you can find there. For example, we learned how waves and tides move and form, and the different types of currents. We also learned how high tides and low tides are different and similar. There are many types of features or ocean landform if you will, inside and outside of the ocean, such as the following: (not all of the features will be listed.there are too many): Jetties, Headlands, Channels,Sea Arches, Tide Pools, and of course, Shores. We also did a design squad when we had to make a boat out of 2 paper

strategies, such as modeling multiplication; addition; and subtraction. We still used common denominators as we did last month, however we only used that for adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers. When multiplying fractions, we kept the original denominators, and multiplied it like any other whole number. In addition, we also learned rules when multiplying fractions and mixed numbers such as the following(P.S. not all rules will be listed):-When multiplying fraction less than one, the answer will be less than one and will be less than either fraction. -When multiplying  a whole number and a mixed number, the product will be greater than the mixed number.-When multiplying 2 mixed numbers, the product will be greater than both factors

In SCIENCE, we did a main study of the ocean and the contents that you can find there. We also did a design squad when we had to make a boat out of 2 paper cups, 10 inches of plastic wrap, 10 straws, and 2 feet of duct tape that could hold 25 pennies for 20 seconds.

* ADDITIONAL NEWS As additional class news, we got a new student, Deen, from Chicago. Welcome Deen. We hope you feel welcome. We also did a family S.T.E.M. night. S.T.E.M. stands S-science T-technology E-engineering M-math.

D e c e m b e r , 2016   In MATH, we found quotients with decimals using the algorithm,

with this algorithm we can divide whole numbers without getting remainders. We also learned that if you multiply 0.07 to any number, you will get the New Jersey sales tax. To review these skills, we did a project about creating a snowman by buying the parts piece, by piece, including the New Jersey sales tax. After that, we started working on fractions. We learned to make the common denominators to make it easier to add and subtract fractions. We then learned how to estimate fractions by using benchmarks.

In SCIENCE, we learned about the atmosphere and the four layers, which are the troposphere, stratosphere, thermosphere, and the mesosphere and the important layer of ozone in the stratosphere. After learning about the atmosphere we learned about wind. We learned about that the uneven heating of the earth is what causes wind to happen. We also learned about sea breezes and land breezes. We did a review on the water cycle. To review the water cycle, we did a project, simply called the Water Cycle Project. And we also learned how fog forms on the earth.

We wish everybody had a very Merry Christmas (or Hanukkah or Kwanzaa) and a HAPPY NEW YEAR!

N o v e m b e r 2 0 1 6 ! ! ! In science we did 2 labs, which were Making

Craters and Soft Landing. In the lab Making Craters we used Lunar dust as

the moon’s surface, and a marble as the asteroid. We measured the depth of the crater in centimeters.

In the lab Soft Landing we had to create an air bag system to prevent a REAL egg (not hard boiled) from cracking. First, we stood on a chair and dropped

it.  Then, we went to the 6th grade balcony, and dropped it.

So as you can see science is very interesting in this class.

Here is an example of what we did, but it was a little bit higher!

In math we learned how to find the quotients from dividing whole numbers (long division).

We also learned how to multiply decimals by whole numbers and how to multiply decimals by decimals.

And how to add and subtract decimals, how to use decimals on benchmarks, and using area models to multiply decimals. Also we related all these concepts to REAL WORLD PROBLEMS!

October 2016In Science we finished working on getting ready for Science Unit and started Design Squad. Design Squad is where we take a challenge to build/create a model of something. In Design Squad we worked together as a group and each table made their own type of lander. Then we talked about Earth and space.Did you know that the sun doesn’t rise or set? While learning about how day and night occur we also learned about 24 different time zones around the world. *Fun Fact in Antarctica is cold in the summer because the rays of the sun are more spread out there. We then learned the difference between Affect and Effect and a way to tell them apart. Effect is a noun it refers to an outcome or result of an investigation. Affect is a verb it means to influence or act upon something. This is the easy way tell them apart: Remember Affect Verb Effect Noun.     In Math, we multiplied and divided using models and algorithms. We always learned to estimate first. We then learned a math method to divide, DMSCB, Does (divide) McDonald’s (Multiply) Serve (Subtract) Cheese (Check) Burgers (Bring Down). This was the monthly report for October 2016!!!!Mrs.Brundidge and Mrs.Rowes class of 2016Solange Otchere and Isabella Lupkiewiech

September 2016In math we were working on place value positions. We finished that off with a quiz. We quickly transformed to exponents to find the power of ten. After that we started whole numbers and decimals using different forms. We ended that with a test.In science we were working on what is a model (NOT A MODEL THAT GOES DOWN THE RUN WAY!!) We worked as a group and made the highest marshmallow tower. Both classes were very excited for this experiment. We moved on and started working on scientific tools. Such as balance beam, ruler, and much more!We also learned the independent, dependent and control variables. Then we started an experiment. “THE MAGIC GROW CAPSULE!) The A.M. class grew a turtle and the P.M. had a dolphin. Last we ended with a test.We finished our month with launching water rockets. It was a very fun month.Yours truly,Yafreila and Katherine J
