Literacy LO: I can answer questions and make relevant comments relating to the story, ‘Aaaarrgghh Spider!’

Resources:For this activity you will need:

A mobile phone with a timer Items of clothing Household items

Activity: Discuss with your child what different patterns they can think of, e.g. stripes, spots,

hearts, dinosaurs, flowers etc. Set a phone timer for 1 minute and ask your child to become a pattern detective

and go on a hunt around the house for as many patterned items as they can find. You can help your child by suggesting they look through their clothing, socks and underwear.

When the 1 minute is up, ask your child to explain the different patterns on the items to you. Your child can group the items based on their pattern e.g. creating a pile for striped items and a pile for spotty items. You can finish by counting how many of each different pattern type you have found. Which pattern type did you find the most of?

Questions: What is a pattern? What different patterns can you think of? Can you describe this pattern? How many items did you manage to find? Can you count them all accurately?

Monday 1

Literacy :LO: I can use my phonics knowledge to write words which are phonetically plausible.LO: I can write a simple sentence.

Resources: For this activity you will need:

A piece of paper/homework book and pen/pencil.

Activity:Re-read the story book Aaaarrgghh Spider! Discuss with your child, if they could have a minibeast as a pet, which minibeast would they choose to have and why? Once you have discussed this, encourage your child to write a sentence about this e.g. I would like a …….. as a pet.

Questions: Can you use your robot arms to sound out the word…..? What sounds can you hear in the word…..? When you are writing a sentence, what 3 things do you need to remember to

include? (a capital letter at the beginning, finger spaces between the words and a full stop at the end)

Challenge: Your child can extend their sentence by justifying why they have chosen this minibeast. They could use the connective ‘because’ to do this e.g. I would like a ……. as a pet because…….

Please remember this writing does not need to be perfect. We just want your child to practise sounding out words and writing the sounds that they can hear.

NumeracyLO: I can recognise numbers to 20 and understand the value of these numbers. LO: I can count up to 20 dots with 1:1 correspondence.

Warmup:Play the ‘show me…’ game with your child, working with numbers from 11 - 20. To play this game you will ask your child to show an amount using their hands.For example, show me…. ‘12.’ Your child should then hold up 10 fingers followed by 2 more fingers. Practise this with numbers 11-20.

Tuesday 1

Resources:For this activity you will need:

Pieces of paper/floor space and pen/chalk

Activity: This activity can either be completed indoors or

outdoors during your daily exercise. Begin by drawing the number squares on the floor in

the park/outdoor space or on pieces of paper. Please do this for numbers 11 - 20 e.g. for number 11 you could draw a 5, a 5 and a 1. Your child can count the dots, matching the number squares to their corresponding number.

Questions: Can you recognise the number…..? How many dots can you count? Can you match the numeral to the correct number of dots?

Literacy

LO: I can learn some key information/facts about spiders. LO: I can listen to information attentively and answer questions in response to this.

Activity: Please open the ‘Spiders PowerPoint’ found on the school website: http://www.stmp.camden.sch.uk/year-groups/reception/ Home Learning - Summer 1 Week 5.

Please explore the Spiders PowerPoint with your child. Ask your child to answer the questions at the end of the PowerPoint slideshow.

This will be an opportunity to see how much information your child can remember about spiders. You can make this more fun by turning it into a competition where they can score points for every question they get right. How many points can they score?

Warm Up:Today play a number recognition game. Cut up medium sized pieces of paper. Write the numbers 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20 on each piece of paper. These numbers need to be big enough so that your child can clearly see them. The bigger the better!

To play this game you will: Show your child a number, e.g. 13 Your child reads and tells you what number it is (13!) Your child then decides on an action (e.g. claps, press-ups, star

jumps, hops etc.) Your child does that action 13 times.

Your child can also use their imagination to come up with even better actions!

Pasta/ Lego pieces/ sweets/ coins/ socks/ conkers, beads

Activity: Set 3 plates out on the table or floor. Begin by placing the number 15 on the top plate. Show your child how to make the number 15 by placing 10 objects on one of the

bottom plates and 5 on the other. Now repeat this activity, asking your child to make different numbers from 11-20

e.g. (11 – 10 and 1, 12 – 10 and 2, 13 – 10 and 3, 14 – 10 and 4 etc)

Questions: Can you recognise this number? How many objects will you need? Can you make the number…..?

Literacy: LO: I can write a letter. LO: I can use my phonics knowledge to write words which are phonetically plausible.

Resources: For this activity you will need:

A piece of paper/homework book and pen/pencil.

Activity: Today your child is going to help the spider write a

letter to the Green family asking to be their pet. Ask your child what they think the spider would say in their letter to the family?

Discuss this. Now ask your child to write their letter to the Green family.

Questions: How do we begin a letter? (To) Who is the letter to? How do we end a letter? (From) Who is the letter from? What do you think the spider would say in their letter to the family? Can you use your robot arms to sound out the word…..? What sounds can you hear in the word…….?

WarmupToday play another ‘show me…’ game with your child. To play this game you will ask your child to show you the different ways they can make a number. You can ask your child to do this for numbers: 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8.

Thursday

Now explain to them that today they are going to find out whether people are afraid of spiders – yes or no.

Ask your child to begin by writing the words ‘yes’ and ‘no’ at the bottom of their page/piece of paper/homework book.

Now ask your child to ask family members if they are afraid of spiders. Your child can draw a spider on a square piece of paper or post it note to represent their response placing it above either yes or no.

You can also call family members or friends on the telephone to ask them the question and record their responses.

Finally, count how many people said yes and how many people said no.

Questions: How many people did you ask the question, ‘are you afraid of spiders?’ to in total? How many people said yes? How many people said no? Which was the most/least popular answer? How do you know this?

Resources:For this activity you will need:

Activities: Go for a short walk as part of your daily exercise. Try and identify the features below in your local environment that are near to the

school. Once you have returned home, please write a sentence identifying what each

picture is e.g. Number 1 is the church. Number 5 is the post box etc.

Resources:For this activity you will need:

Paper/homework book and colouring pencils/pens

Activity: Today your child will be completing their own tally chart to find out which

minibeast is the favourite. Begin by asking your child to choose 4 minibeasts they want to use for their tally

chart and ask them to draw these (use the tally chart picture above for help with this).

Your child can then ask family members which minibeast is their favourite, making a tally mark to represent their choice.

You can also call other family members and family friends on the phone to ask which minibeast is their favourite.

Once you have everybody’s responses, you will need to count how many tally marks you have for each minibeast to complete your tally chart.

Can your child now tell you which minibeast is the favourite?

Questions: Which minibeast is your favourite? How many people liked…….? Which minibeast is the most/least popular? How do you know this? Which is the biggest/smallest number?

Challenge: How many more people liked…….than……..?

This activity will take time and can be added to each week.1. Separate the poster into seven different squares or use seven different pieces of paper to

create a booklet!2. Label each piece of paper/square with a different day of the creation story You could title

each day too if you wanted, for example: Day 1 – Light & Dark3. Ask your child to draw / create a picture for each day of the creation story. They can then

use their sounds to label their pictures.

The days of the creation story are as follows: Day 1 – Light & Dark Day 2 – Clouds & Water Day 3 – Land & Plants Day 4 – Sun, Moon & Stars Day 5 – Fish & Birds Day 6 – Humans & Animals Day 7 – God Rested

Understanding of the World:

Can you make a spider biscuit?For this activity you will need: 100g (½ cup) of softened butter 50g (¼ cup) of caster sugar150g (1 ¼ cup) of self-raising flourA bag of MaltesersPlain chocolate to melt A large bowlA wooden spoon

Biscuit Recipe: Line the baking tray with baking paper or

grease with butter. Soften the butter in the microwave/on the hob for 10 seconds

and then put this into a mixing bowl. Now add ¼ cup caster sugar to the butter, mixing with the

wooden spoon until combined. Now add 1 ¼ cup of self-raising flour to the mixture. Use your

hands to knead together until into a soft dough. Roll the soft dough into small teaspoon sized balls. Place these on the baking tray

leaving space between the balls for them to spread. Dip a fork in cold water and press down on each ball of biscuit dough in turn to flatten

each biscuit and make an imprint.
