Bernard thanked Tia, LaShonda, his staff, and volunteers for support. Bernard established protocol for addressing issues. Everything is to be directed to Bernard. He also encouraged everyone to be positive and make every opportunity to keep SABE great. A list will be placed on the website to communicated status on terms on the board. Bernard announced that the Board will go and look at the convention center for 2020 conference while at this meeting.

SABE was approached by the state of Georgia to consider if they want to make long run home a national campaign. Everyone would get together and make it a national event in DC. It could be a joint effort with other disability groups. The pros and cons of the event are listed:

Assign “Long Road Home” to close the doors and have committee come up with plan. Eric McVay made motion to forward this for further review with Close the Doors committee. Anne Fracht seconded the motion. The vote was unanimous.

The new projects were presented to the board: VOTE, SARTAC, Self Advocate Online w/U. Minnesota,Disability Policy Seminar. Also grant proposals were presented.

Reports

Go Voter Project is about supporting the P&A with voting awareness. The project promotes surveys. A 2019 Voter toolkit was also introduced to the board. The book was sent to the Secretary of State and all state P&A state offices. When the booklet is forwarded, a correspondence letter accompanies to explain the GoVoter Project booklet. Members encouraged to support ideas on ways to get more people to participate. North Carolina, Ohio, and Wisconsin got the most survey results into project! Members encouraged to go back to states and promote the report in the booklet.

SARTAC – presented by Teresa MooreThe advisory committee has met three times this year. (3) fellows are almost complete with projects. Sartac Fellow participated in the UN Conference. “Ask Me Anything” session was done by Max and Topper in New Orleans at the National DD Council. Sartac webinars were introduced for members to reference.

RRTC Employment with UMASSSiblings Leadership Network (SLN)- presented by Eric McVaySLN held a budget meeting in late August 2019. Information will be forward September board minutes to SABE.

Committee Reports

Finance presented by Darren MorrisRoger Crome made the motion to accept purchase of the president’s cell phone. Eric McVay seconded the motion.

The vote was unanimous. Roger recommended an I-phone -Leasing maybe a better option for cost. Committee members will resume for evening work on special committees.

Day III - October 5, 2019

Bylaws - presented by Tom Masseau Consideration of the board structure to look at a-member-at-large system. This type structure would replace the regional representative system. Roger Crome motion to table this discussion. Dianna Mairose. Terms were also reviewed again with members for clarity and understanding.

Close the Door - presented by Roger Crome.More productive to do conference call so that they can determine direction on the long home run national rally. A decision will be made in January 2020.

Public Relations – presented by Diana Mairose reported on voted on doing stories on transportation, housing, employment, and voting sending them to Juliana’s email

Legislative – presented by Sara Carmany and Melody CooperHR582 (Raise the Wage Act) and senate 150 bill for raising the minimum wage to $15. Sara is petitioning to US congress and Mitch McConnell. The petition is now posted on SABE website. Sara read the petition to board. Technical assistance provided from 14 C to competitive employment. The direct care act bill was passed which develops, creates and promotes retention to maintain direct care in the workforce. President Trump did sign the Autism Care Act! Department of Labor Secretary has shown interest in support of people with disabilities.

Tia shared that the number of petitions and letters sent makes a difference. Congress has to continue to hear about the opposition. Tia also shared about the LEND program and how important it is for self advocates to have self advocates interact with LEND. Members are encouraged to participate as LEND Trainees. Self-Advocates need to be at the table to work together with parents and LEND workers. Everyone is educating each other. It is in the stature if LEND gets self advocates involved. There is also a Self Advocate Coordinator through LEND. This is also blended in with the Autism Care Act. It is a great piece of legislation that passes.

Thanks to SABE for also sending letters in support of Autism Care ACT which supports the LEND program. Melody also shared that she along with Betty Williams and Amanda Circle went through the class and are trainees. They asked for binders to be put in place to support the understanding of the program which was needed for all and is now a part of the program.

Grassroots presented by David Taylor Jr. and committee

David Taylor Jr. will take a certification class to become an ADA Coordinator for SABE. This class will take place on Oct. 9, 2019 in Charlotte. The plan is to let committee members be aware when David completes the certification and move forward with implementation of plans at next meeting.

Announcements

The vote videos will be done at the next board meeting. Everyone encouraged to wear VOTE T-shirts. If you are not comfortable with being video- taped, then you do not have to participate.
