“Summarize the historical roots of community development and

organizing, advocacy, and social movements” (Kincaid, Syllabus).

Looking through my concepts papers I didn’t pick on that related back to
learning objective number one. There were many topics throughout this class that could
have really related to more than one learning outcome. All of my pictures above
describe each on of the learning outcomes. The first one being organization, second
advocacy with a girl speaking in a microphone, The third picture showing woman’s
rights, and the fourth look at communities coming together. My favorite is the woman’s
rights movement. It’s crazy to see how far we have come as a country. Back then

woman had no right to do anything now they have the same rights as men. The big
controversial topic now is if woman should be able to be in the front line in military. I
think eventually woman will have this right it’s just a matter of time.
“ Analyze community systems and structures, and design and evaluate
processes to initiate and sustain change through specific strategies, tactics, activities
and social policy advocacy” (Kincaid Syllabus).

My pictures above, our pictures that I felt best described learning object
number two. The first one relating to change in every aspect of life including community
change. The second picture relates to strategies. Along with making changes it takes
strategies for these to come into effect. My third picture describes be active. This would

be being involved in activities throughout the community. With the fourth picture this
describes social problems. Every community has these types of problems that they can
struggle with. As communities we just need to make sure we find ways to change them.
I think that wraps it up with these pictures above and how they relate to community
systems and structures.
For learning objective number two we talked a lot about community
change in this class. Along with community change there is personal change as well.
Once we learn how to change personally then we can start to change our community. It
seems like everyone can get so discouraged with trying to help change a community
since they are just one person and communities can be thousands of people. For some
I feel like we can just start to feel very small.
That is not the fact thought. By one person wanting to make a change it
will push along many others to step up and help. It only takes one person to start
something different. That one person can start community events, fundraiser, activities,
etc. This would help anyone in the community find out who else is along their side and
wants change as well.
“Record, assess, and reflect on experiences with community and the
influence of human services values, attitudes, and ethics in relationship to community
change” (Kincaid Syllabus).

With learning objective number three these are the different pictures that I
chose to describe it the best. The first picture I thought best described human services
values, Mission, Vision and Values. I thought that was neat to see as picture form. The
second picture is about attitude. This is something else that I was reminded in this class
is that attitude means everything and with the right one you can truly do anything. The
third picture resembles ethics; everything in life has a code of ethics. Whether it’s about
my degree, the places my internship is at, or my future career job, it’s all about ethics.
The fourth picture describes relationships. Relationships with people of our community

is the most important.
Around the fourth week of the quarter I learned about nonprofit
organizations and how to get the word out. In this day in age I feel like spreading the
word about an organization is more and more easier. There is so much social media
that people use these days that include Facebook, twitter, email, etc. Other ways to get
the word out about a nonprofit organization are things like fundraising around the
community. Also in this section I learned a lot about attitude. Attitude is everything when
it comes to being successful. Sure everyone goes through their hard times but it doesn’t
mean things can’t turn around for the better.
“Analyze the systemic issues related to culture, diversity, and social class
in the context of community systems” (Kincaid, Syllabus).

Relating to learning objective number four on diversity, culture and social
class was one of my favorite sections. I love learning about other cultures and their

diversity. One of my goals in life is to go to another country and experience the different
culture. As much as we read about it in a text book I don’t think it is anywhere near the
experience that it would be. Walk out Walk on, was a great book to read right before
graduation. It makes me want to go travel before I settle into my career job.
During this quarter I have gained a lot more knowledge towards how
community systems work as well as putting together a policy brief. This was my first
class that I had even been introduced to what a policy brief even is. This was one of my
biggest learning experiences in this class. There are lots that go into a policy brief but
it’s a lot different than just a regular essay. The point is to get the point across about the
topic you are discussing. For the most part a policy brief should be short, simple and to
the point. I am bummed that I didn’t get to go on the field trip up to Olympia. Life is
simply way too busy for that. I do think that would have been a really great experience
as well.
