Maths White Rose Home Learning https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/

Follow the weeks on this site as they are added. There is a useful teaching clip and activity to accompany each learning step.Week 1 Tenths and Hundredths Week 2 Tenths and Hundredths

There is no need to print out individual sheets, instead the children can just write the answers to questions within an exercise book.

Can Do Maths Parent Packshttps://stjamesbookbaghome.files.wordpress.com/2020/03/candomaths-workouts-4.1-4.2-march-2020.pdfThese focus on practising and applying learning that has already taken place this year and will follow the same basic structure: some ‘Do It’ practice, problems to solve including a game, empty box, challenges and worded problems. The content will be based on units taught so far this year - more content will be produced by Can Do Maths and will be added to the St James’ Virtual Book Bag as we receive them. At the moment there are three workouts available for each year group. Although they are no longer able to produce a video for each day of the workouts, they have updated the playlists on their channel and have put together generic videos for each game and workout for reference.www.buzzardpublishing.com/cando-videos

Corbett maths – 5 a day tasks (consolidation of number sense) Silver or Gold task sheets.Videos – Addition Video 1, Adding decimals Video 15 – watch video and then answer the questions given. https://corbettmathsprimary.com/

Extra challenges – investigate under LK2 (Lower Key Stage 2)Areas of mathematical learning to consolidate:

Rounding to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000 Reading and writing negative numbers Estimate and use inverse operations to check answers to calculations Add and subtract fractions with the same denominator

WritingAny writing at all would be wonderful! Select one writing project each week and follow this simple structure:

Newspaper article about the disaster of Pompeii erupting/schools shutting and home learningDiary entry on tea stained paper – written as a citizen of PompeiiBiography of a great modern day explorer – Bear Grylls, Tim PeakeNon – Chronological report on famous natural disasters – this could be presented as a PowerPointInspirational writing using a picture stimulus - https://www.pobble365.com/ - scroll down for short and long writing ideas. By clicking on the Pdf link, the writing tasks are presented as a Power Point – much more user friendly for children to use independently.Day Approximat

Day 1 30 – 40 minutes

Immerse the child in examples of the writing genre – encourage them to look at examples on the internet and around the house. Are children able to identify the features present, making a list of what they would expect to find (look at the layout of writing and the grammatical features – for example, is the writing laid out in paragraphs? Written in the third person? What tense is it written in? etc …)

Day 2 30 – 40 minutes

Plan and research a piece of writing that follows the same structure – the content can be on anything your child is interested in – for example, if they enjoy Space, they might choose to write a biography about Tim Peake; a British astronaut.

Days 3 – 5

30 – 40 minutes

Begin writing in short bursts – 30 to 40 minutes at a time. Then allow time for your child to read through their work, sharing it with someone as a support for editing and redrafting. We tend to write over a number of days, which will allow for editing and rewriting of sentences/phrases before any new writing begins.

Extra/optional to above, challengesLiteracy Shedhttps://www.literacyshedplus.com/en-gb/resource/the-lighthouse-ks2-activity-packUse The Lighthouse - a video clip - as a stimulus for your writing – If you go directly to the link, there is a KS2 Activity pack which will allow you to find the clip. You will find lots of supporting documents that the children might like to use to develop their own writing and storytelling techniques – guidance is given in the activity pack.Further possible ideas

Write as a setting description Complete a Non Chronological Report about the history of lighthouses Writing the story from the man’s point of view – including an action scene using lots of

powerful verbs and adverbs

Jane Considine Super Sentence Stackers - great writing sessions on YouTube - live lessons but can be easily re-watched, e.g. Blue Umbrella, La Luna… You don’t need to limit yourself to just one chunk!

Poetry PowerPoints found in the Virtual Book Bag – suitable for all ages to work together

Here is the link to the expectations in writing for Y4 to help you to remember what elements to include:http://stjamescofeprimary.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/writing-key-objectives.pdfPlease feel free to email your writing to Mrs Harris or Mrs Sutch – we would love to read it!

Spelling, Grammar and PunctuationLearning areas taught:

Identifying word classes – nouns, verbs, prepositions, adjectives, adverbs, determiners, pronouns

Acknowledging and understanding punctuation types Identifying statements/questions/commands Placing fronted adverbials Using co coordinating and subordinating conjunctions accurately to extend ideas and

thoughts Dictionary challenges Thesaurus challenges Correct use of regular and irregular past tenses Relative clauses

Task Name DescriptionGames Going Ask your child to go shopping for one or more of the above

and Challenges

shopping learning areas, for example, expanded nouns/different sentence openers – how many can they find on one page of their reading book.

Dice Roll Create an A4 grid of 9 spaces – place numbers 1 -9 within each square and write a grammatical term. Get 2 dice, roll them together, total the dice rolls and find the grammatical term/punctuation type that links with the number. Then find an example of that term/punctuation within a reading book and write it as evidence within the square, for example, irregular past tense verb = fought.

Bingo A bingo board game of grammatical terms could be made with an accompanying deck of cards – turn a card over, for example, dashing, if you have the term verb on your board, you can cross it out.

These are just a few ideas that the children might like to create/ actively engage in, but I know there are plenty of others. Hopefully, the children will be able to make/play these games independently.

ReadingReading for pleasure is one of the most important gifts we can give our children – books can be read to them, shared with them or children can read to us or on their own.

Here are some short reading challenges –ask your child to read for 20 minutes and then answer one of the challenges from the list below – they could create a reading journal; writing their response to the challenge given.

Write a short paragraph predicting what you think will happen next in your story Look back at the prediction– were you correct? Explain how, if not, what happened instead? “Quote” something a character said in your book and explain what this tells you about them. “Quote “something a character in your book did and explain what this tells you about them. Who would you recommend the book you are reading to? Explain why they would like it. Summarise what has happened in your story so far in approximately 50 words. Think about

what has happened since the beginning and not just the recent pages you have read. Write down two words from your book that you don’t know the meaning of. Look them up in a

dictionary and then write your own sentences using them. Choose a non-fiction book about weather or natural disasters. Write down 5 things you have

found out about from reading this book. Don’t forget to include the title too. Write down one question you would ask a character in the book you are reading. Then imagine

you are them, write down what their response would be. Don’t forget to say the character you

Page 5: stjamesbookbaghome.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web viewY4 Home Learning Ideas. Timetable advice. Dear Year 4 Parents,. We hope you are all well and that the children are happy and

have chosen. Write about any parts you did not like and explain why Write about what you think the author wants you to learn from reading this book

SHORT READING COMPREHENSIONS – BY CLICKING ON THE FOLLOWING LINK YOU WILL BE ABLE TO DOWNLOAD A SET OF SHORT READING COMPREHENSIONS FOR THE CHILDREN TO LOOK AT INDEPENDENTLY OVER A COUPLE OF SESSIONS; https://www.literacyshedplus.com/en-gb/resource/stage-4-reading-packs

Free Audio books: Google David Walliams soundcloud freeAudible.com https://stories.audible.com Access the FB page to hear Mrs Sutch reading ‘The Finders’

Within the virtual book bag, there are a 100 book suggestions for Years 5/6 – have a look for inspiration, as there are some great titles which I know Year 4 would love too.

Please email your teacher if you would like specific comprehension tasks for your child to complete.

Creative projectsPlease visit the Virtual Book Bag on the St James’ website for project ideas. These ideas include History, Geography and Art and Design tasks. Please select from them as you wish.

So far we have placed Task sheet 1 – The Romans and Task sheet 2 – The Anglo Saxons. The next task sheets will be based on ‘The Wizard of OZ’ and Natural Disasters.

ScienceNext half term we would have begun looking at States of Matter in Science; teaching under the following objectives:

Can I compare and group materials according to whether they are solids, liquids or gases? https://www.stem.org.uk/resources/elibrary/resource/30642/what-stuff-doeshttps://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zkgg87hhttps://www.theschoolrun.com/what-are-states-of-matterhttps://easyscienceforkids.com/all-about-states-of-matter/

Can I observe materials that change state when they are heated or cooled? https://www.stem.org.uk/resources/elibrary/resource/33266/biscuit-bashinghttps://www.stem.org.uk/resources/elibrary/resource/33254/intriguing-icehttps://www.twinkl.co.uk/search?term=states+of+matter+melting+chocolate

Can I measure or research the temperature that a change of state occurs? Can I identify evaporation/condensation in the water cycle and associate this with the rate of

evaporation with temperature?

After your child has watched a clip, are they able to start a knowledge organiser on an A3 piece of paper? Each time adding more and more key information to it once another video has been watched. This can be done independently, all they need to know and understand is that, they need to write/draw down the key information they have learnt from each of the short video tutorials. See below for an example – there are plenty of other examples on the internet for inspiration/ideas for presentation.

Some cool experiments to investigate and discuss:https://raisinglifelonglearners.com/freezing-ice-balloons/

Sort materials or pictures of materials into solids, liquids and gases.

Carry out some practical investigations:

Explore reversible changes such as heating and cooling by making chocolate crispy cakes or ice-lollies

Explore irreversible changes by making a bicarbonate of soda volcano, baking cakes or making toast

Investigate how to separate solutions using sieving and filtering

https://lifestyle.howstuffworks.com/crafts/science-projects/science-projects-for-kids-states-of-matter.htm Please note, some of these experiments need quite a few materials, others are more simple to stage! We would love to hear how you get on. You can log one of your experiments on you knowledge organiser.

Possible recording of experiments:Set a timer, keep checking every 1 minute, record observations of changing state through pictures and words.Formally record the experiment using Twinkl link: https://www.twinkl.co.uk/resource/t-m-511-science-experiment-recording-sheet---ks2Create a States of Matter quiz using all the observations and facts you have acquired.Create a board game, using a track, make sure spaces include miss a go, move forward, move backwards, roll again etc…Create a comic strip of a rain drop as they move through the water cycle – using this short clip as inspiration https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FhZf1olD-no
