Y5 Home Learning Ideas Dear Year 5 Parents, We hope you are all getting on ok and the children aren’t missing us all too much! We trust that you will find the information within this guide helpful. Y5 Home Learning IdeasDear Year 5 Parents,

We hope you are all getting on ok and the children aren’t missing us all too much!

We trust that you will find the information within this guide helpful. It follows along the lines of the initial fortnight of work and the expectation from us is the same – do what works for you as a family. We have tried to provide a balance of ideas and links but would not expect all to be used- far from it! Mrs Allen is certainly finding it hard co-ordinating across year groups between siblings so where things can be shared across, we have highlighted in green. And all of our previous advice remains true – this is NOT a prescriptive set of work to be followed on a daily basis and children will not be ‘missing out’ on coverage if they do not complete the work below. Remember also that writing in relation to any of the subjects we have suggested is still just as relevant so if your child is struggling to write creatively at home perhaps using one of the tasks from other subjects to write would be helpful. Perhaps a maths task and picking one more task today will suit most.

The BBC lessons launch this Monday (20th) with a timetable for each year group they are being supported by White Rose for the maths so this will hopefully tie nicely with our suggestions to date. Obviously, we haven’t seen these, but they may be a nice option for more independent learning. We are happy for you to send us bits of work you are very proud of or to ask us questions if you are stuck just bear in mind response times may vary and we will not be marking work at this point.Fran Allen ([email protected] )Jane Avery ([email protected])Rebecca Woodward ([email protected] )

For the children

Hello!

We hope you are all ok and are sure you must be missing your friends, clubs and the playground. This must be a strange time for you but try to make the most of it as a time to research and investigate what you are interested in yourselves, to write and read freely without distractions and rules.

We really do understand it is hard to learn so independently and with siblings running around and parents who are often busy and juggling many other things and with lovely weather tempting you outside.Of course, you guys have practised outdoor learning, so you are experts at being able to draw, write and investigate in the open air (if you are able to do so safely away from other people).

We have given you ideas for work in all subject areas so you can pick your favourites, but we also recognise you might have your own exciting ideas for projects, so you do not need to be constrained. If you can find the time the maths links will enable you to work on your own most of the time and even to mark your own work.Mrs Avery’s special reading project is an amazing opportunity so we hope you will find the time to investigate this. If you have found fun and exciting things to do, then please share them with us and your friends as it is great if we can learn together.

We have put an e-book tutorial under the computing section if you fancy presenting work that

way.Maybe see if you have a spot to display your best pieces of work in the house and be proud of what you have produced in these tricky times. You can take a picture to send to us also and we will enjoy immensely looking at your efforts.

Do not forget to ensure you take time to safely get out and get fresh air exercise and vitamin D (from the sunshine)! Try to talk through any worries you have.

Finally, we have included many links to online work or clips to watch. Be sure to use the internet responsibly just as we have taught you at school. Be mindful for example ‘you tube’ videos can automatically follow on from one another so be careful to stop clips. If you find anything you are uncomfortable with online make sure you talk to a trusted adult to report appropriately.

Our classrooms look like they have fallen asleep being so dark and quiet. We really look forward to the point we are altogether again but until that point… We send you bags of love and motivation to find the will power to keep your reading, writing and maths going!!

Mrs Allen, Mrs Avery and Miss Woodwardxx

MathsWhite Rose Home LearningFollow the weeks on this site as they are added. There is a useful teaching clip and activity to accompany each learning step.Week 1: Decimals as fractionsWeek 2: Rounding and ordering decimals, introduction to percentagesSummer Week 1: Adding and subtracting decimalshttps://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-5/For Year 5 – the clip and worksheet are more than enough to fill a day for most, and the children can mark their own as they are all able to do this.

Can Do Maths Parent Packshttps://stjamesbookbaghome.files.wordpress.com/2020/03/candomaths-workouts-5.1-5.2-march-2020.pdfThese units focus on practising and applying learning that has already taken place this year and follow the same basic structure: some ‘Do It’ practice, problems to solve including a game, empty box, challenges and word problems. Week 1: MultiplicationWeek 2: DivisionWeek 3: Place valueThe videos for the Parent Packs are here: www.buzzardpublishing.com/cando-videos and the answers are being shared via Twitter @MathsCanDo.

The content will be based on units taught so far this year - more content will be produced by Can Do Maths and will be added to the St James’ Virtual Book Bag as we receive them. At the moment there are three workouts available for each year group.

Timestables rockstars – at least once a day if possible. In 15 minute, short blasts. We would like you to keep practising your multiplication tables using Times Table Rockstars. Currently, there is a tournament battle between our two Year 5 classes. Have you been logging in regularly to help your class win?

Corbett maths5 a day tasks (excellent daily consolidation) – Some children know if they bronze or silver but there are easier and trickier options so please be led by your child. ON THIS CLASS11 ALL KNOW THEIR LEVEL_ SOME ARE BRONZE AND SILVER TOOhttps://corbettmathsprimary.com/

Our school’s mathematics calculation policy can be found on our website (under the Key Information  Policies tabs) which provides the written methods we use at St. James’ for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

WritingAny writing at all would be wonderful! Do not forget writing for ANY subject still counts.

There is information on a writing competition in the Kate Greenaway reading project, please take a look and send your best entries for Mrs Avery to submit.

Literacy Shedhttps://www.literacyshed.com/alma.htmlUse Alma as a stimulus for your writing - it’s a little bit creepy but will generate some great writing. Using the link above you will be able to see some work generated by Y6 children.

Write as a narrative Write a newspaper article about the events going on in the town about the missing

childrenThe Literacy Shed is a wonderful resource to stimulate writing.

Jane Considine Super Sentence Stackers Great writing sessions on YouTube - live lessons but can easily re-watch, e.g. Blue Umbrella, Hair Love… You don’t need to limit yourself to just one chunk!TASKTo mix things up just using this as a focus to write a really well edited set of sentences for the odd day will remove the creative focus and help a focus on a short piece of well-crafted sentences. There are lots of uploads now so may have a super sentence Tuesday – where each week you really focus on amazing sentences and the words and punctuation you choose. The film starter clips are suitable for ANY year group and for younger siblings if they make some sentences you could try to write them out for them too?

Literacy with Miss Phttps://literacywithmissp.comOne English idea is being added a day - lots of scope here for inspiring writing.

https://literacytrust.org.uk/family-zone/9-12/ - This collects all sorts of resources and projects that you could look at if you are fed up – including some football based English work…!Mrs Allen’s children have really enjoyed researching an animal and creating fact files of them – this of course counts as writing so if you have an interest follow it.

Spelling, Grammar and PunctuationConsolidate and revisit the content covered so far. This sheet is a good guide for revision, definitions and explanations:http://www.tranmerepark.leeds.sch.uk/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/Phrase-clause-explanation.pdfSome useful revision activities, covering the main areas of grammar and punctuation on BBC Bitesize. Books read to you by authors:

Sometimes settling to read can be hard and an audio book is just a perfect way to enjoy a story without necessarily reading it yourself. ‘Floodland’ is a great book for year 5/6 reader interest set in an all too believable near future when many parts of England are submerged in water and people drift into gangs, divided due to the scarcity of resources, especially food. Zoe has been left behind on an island which used to be the city of Norwich and

discovers a boat which she wants to use to try and find her parents. She has to cope with human cruelties and frailties, but the story ends on a note of hope. The author is reading the book chapter by chapter and uploading it here:https://marcussedgwick.com/floodland/

Shadowing Kate Greenaway Project workOther tasks from this will be released into the book bag as they are created. You’re snug with me- linked learning ideas

In illustrating one of the books from the Kate Greenaway prize, Poonam Mistry has used intricate patterns inspired by Inuit clothing and textiles and knitwear and incorporated them into her design. Colours have been carefully chosen to show warmth and cold in what they are representing.

Page 5: stjamesbookbaghome.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web viewY5 Home Learning Ideas. Dear Year 5 Parents, We hope you are all getting on ok and the children aren’t missing us all too

There are ways for you to use this to inspire new work or to demonstrate how you can repackage your own previous learning differently.

Revision:TASKS

Could you replicate this author’s style of the globe illustration e.g. to produce a poster which identifies the geographic terms we learnt in Autumn term, such as equator, hemisphere, tropics etc.?

Again, thinking of the double page spread here, how could this image be utilised if you were to explain your scientific knowledge of terms such as: orbit, rotation, geocentric, heliocentric etc.?

Arctic biomes: This text is set in one of the biomes we have studied. The Arctic Winter In many of the pictures in the book the sky is very dark. This is because in winter the beams of the sun get weaker, the sky gets dark for longer every day. Eventually in the Arctic Winter there are 24 hour days of complete darkness; this is known as ‘polar nights’. Although it is dark and extremely cold, the sky is usually clear in winter, so it is the best time to look at the stars in the Arctic sky.

TASK : Where is the Arctic? The Arctic is not a country. Find the North Pole in an atlas. Can you also find the Arctic Circle? It is the most northerly line of latitude. Which ocean and countries lie within that line?

TASK : The text is about polar bears, the largest land carnivores. Did you know polar bear cubs are no bigger than guinea pigs when they are born? And that their fur is hollow? What colour is their skin? What other facts can you gather about them which support their adaptation to the particular biome in which they live?

TASK: Could you create and illustrate a story in the which tells the tale of a different animal which lives in another biome?

SpaceTask 1https://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/52116880 - this new material was released a few days ago. There’s also a new BBC sounds podcast on the Apollo 13 mission. Create a timeline of key events on the Apollo 13 mission.Task 2

Page 6: stjamesbookbaghome.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web viewY5 Home Learning Ideas. Dear Year 5 Parents, We hope you are all getting on ok and the children aren’t missing us all too

Write a paragraph on any or all of these questions (links to Philosophy for Children) try to use examples to justify your answers (they do not need to relate to Apollo 13, but they can)Do you think failure can help drive success? Do you think hope is important for humans to survive? Do you think space exploration is important?

Forces Gravity ExperimentsWe have talked about gravity in relation to space and the moon and looked at it a little bit….Take a look at some of these experimentshttps://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zf66fg8/resources/1https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oYEgdZ3iEKATry this experiment yourself if you have a straw and ping pong ball or lightweight ball (make sure it is not too tiny as you DO NOT want it to travel up the straw to be swallowed.

Task 3Try making a paper helicopter;https://www.twinkl.co.uk/resource/t-he-369-paper-helicopter-investigation-display-packLook through the PowerPoint first within the above link and think about the forces that might be involved. Open the template and create your helicopter. Have the results sheet printed or on screen to write out your own results. The teaching ideas in the back give you extra challenges too.https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/forces-paper-helicopters-6429273 - if you wish to extend this further you could look at these labelling forces sheets and have a go thinking about other forces that exist in our world.Task 4Pick one or two experiments and describe them. What was the test AIM? What do you PREDICT will happen? Explain the METHOD. What was the RESULT? What does it show?

Watch this..https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zf66fg8/articles/zqbm3k7underneath it is a quiz check.https://www.twinkl.co.uk/resource/science-forces-gravity-year-5-lesson-pack-2-tp2-s-297

Task 5Pick 3-5 famous scientists and create a knowledge organiser or fact file to show their discovery and a few key bits of information about them. You could draw a picture of them or present everything digitally using something like PowerPoint.

See below for an example – there are plenty of other examples on the internet for inspiration/ideas for presentation.

FACT SHEET – Isaac Newton

Page 7: stjamesbookbaghome.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web viewY5 Home Learning Ideas. Dear Year 5 Parents, We hope you are all getting on ok and the children aren’t missing us all too

See Twinklhttps://www.twinkl.co.uk/resource/science-forces-gravity-year-5-lesson-pack-2-tp2-s-297you can read the Isaac Newton fact sheet from the screen and answer the questions (another sheet) or just use him as one of your famous scientists above.

Twinkl also has lessons on other forces – you could look at the PowerPoint and design an experiment which would investigate Friction for example.STEM LearningSTEM Learning is producing some great resources which can be used to investigate scientifically at home - great to do with siblings if that helps. Have a go at any of these - you don’t have to stick to electricity. Photos of anything you do would be wonderful and we would love to see them!https://www.stem.org.uk/home-learning/primary

HistoryKings and Queens of EnglandTask 1Pick a King or Queen of your choice. You can use this twinkl link to help you choose one.https://www.twinkl.co.uk/resource/t2-h-4573-significant-british-monarchs-timeline-ordering-activityResearch your choice monarch and if you have a younger sibling support them to find out about their choice too. https://www.dkfindout.com/uk/history/kings-and-queens/These clips are good for younger siblings https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zkrkscwThese will link you to British history clips which include some monarchs. https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/subjects/zcw76sgPresent your findings in your own way – you could draw a picture and surround it with facts. You could create a PowerPoint or knowledge organiser. Ensure you including the dates of the monarch’s reign. How to be a historianhttps://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/zq7dq6f - short clip reminding you to be curious. Then choose a virtual museum tour. https://www.nhm.ac.uk/visit/virtual-museum.html - There are amazing links to just explore these museum – JUST LOOK ROUND IT and ENJOY.

GeographyTASKCloud project – The sky has never looked so beautiful with low global emissions.https://www.3dgeography.co.uk/cloud-types-for-kidsTake photos of different types of clouds you spot to create a photographic journal of your observations. Can you name any?TASKResearch a country in South America. Try to think about its location in relation to the world, the UK and the rest of South America. What is the countries climate? What is its capital city? Famous landmarks? Population? Industries and trades? Wildlife?https://historyview.org/library/amazon-rainforest/Take a virtual tour of the area if possible. Central to life at St. James’ are our twelve core values. How for example, could you show love, generosity, friendship, co-operation and responsibility during this time? Perhaps through simple acts of kindness, which could make a big difference to your family, friends or neighbours. We know what a great group of compassionate children you are – why not record acts of kindness on your calendar and take a few minutes to reflect how your goodwill has impacted on another. Be kind. But ensure you remain safe when you consider ideas remember the rules of social distancing and handwashing.

Task Reflect on your current home life and how things are different for everyone there at the moment; everyone’s life has changed in the U.K. and around the world. Write a prayer, again, you can refer to our core values (see our website) and the two images below to help you. Now more than ever is a time for love, kindness and hope. https://www.christianaid.org.uk/pray/churches/coronavirus-prayers offers some examples which may inspire you – think too of health workers, shop assistants, those living on their own or who are poorly. Perhaps you could record your prayer and send it to family or friends (as an act of kindness!) or present it as a piece of artwork.

SketchingSketch in your own style not following a drawing program. Do a 10 minute daily sketch of something e.g. an animal one day, a person the next, a flower.Sit in the garden to draw or sketch.DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE THE VALUE OF DRAWING AND SKETCHING AND PAINTING - it’s super for brain development and relaxation.

Task Draw round your hand and arm and fill it with doodles and words – these could be a theme for example minibeasts.

TaskDraw or paint a picture of your last memory of being in a busy place or crowd – for example in assembly, on a beach or shopping in town.Think about what it felt like. Try to represent it in your own way.

DTTaskDesign a chair – over the years there have been many types of chairs designed. Research iconic chair designs on the internet. Produce a spider diagram of the different uses that you can think of for chairs. Think hard! For example, dentist’s chair.Consider in your design; comfort, support, how the chair looks and what it is used for. Does it have special features?Design your chair and label it. Try to consider the type of materials you might use too.

MusicMusic can be very therapeutic – cheering us up or helping us to relax.Try to listen to various types of music and write down your thoughts on it - Some questions to help you:

Do I like it? Why? How does it make me feel? What does this make me think of? What instruments can I hear? Is it fast/slow/loud/quiet? You might even want to try and draw some pictures based on the music that you are

listening to.

Have a go at using things that you have around the house to make some instruments that you can use to play along with. (Some ideas can be found here https://feltmagnet.com/crafts/Music-Instruments-for-Kids-to-Make). Send a picture/video of your instrument to us and explain how you can make sounds from it.Try composing and writing your own song. Use our poetry work to help influence you. Perhaps this could be a thank you song for our careers and NHS workers or something to perform during a Thursday clap.Or plan a family dance!!!
