Choose one country and in your table teams research the following aspects of that country’s culture.

Family Family structure, identity, gender roles, choices.

Community Identity, multiculturalism, social order, politics.

Lifestyle Food, celebration, games, past-times

Education Access, availability, choice

Gender Roles Responsibility, choices, cultural expectations, traditional roles

In your table teams, read and annotate (using sticky notes) the picture book.

Highlight the following:● Salient Image● Layout● Colour

Activity: The first page ● What is your response to this ripped page?● How does it make you feel?● What does it make you think of?● What is the effect of the white on the torn edge?● Is it the picture or the page of text, which is torn?● What kind of place is this?● How would you describe the setting?● Is the time of day significant? How does it affect the atmosphere and mood

Activity: Dominant colours

Flick through the pages of Way Home again. Identify FOUR dominant colours used throughout the picture book.

Copy the table below into your workbook and list the colours in the first column. Then write some examples of where this colour is seen in the picture book and then consider and analyse the effect of the use of this colour in the third column.
