Year 5 – EnglishMonday 20 th April 2020

Welcome back, Year 5! I hope you all enjoyed the holidays and managed to enjoy some delicious chocolate eggs!

We are going to start the week with a grammar session where we shall explore one of my all-time favourite parts of punctuation (yes, I am very cool and have punctuation preferences). See if you can spot the mistake:

Ms Sampsons chocolate egg was the biggest there has ever been.

Good! I am sure that most of you spotted that I forgot my ‘apostrophe for possession’. I should have written:

Ms Sampso n’s chocolate egg was the biggest there has ever been.

Watch the following video clip please…

You use the apostrophe to show possession – Laiyna’s fabulous drawing, Roberio’s new football, Arran’s pet ladybird, Gabriel’s delicious lunch. If a word ends in an ‘s’ (often because it is plural) it goes at the end – the girls’ football match, the teachers’ cakes, Louis’ book.

Now, have a go at the activity and then the quiz that are found below the video (same link as above): https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zvwwxnb/articles/zx9ydxs

Your next activity is to look at the following signs. Please identify what is wrong with them, write an explanation why and then what is should appear as. You do not need to print this, you can just write your answers on a piece of paper. I will give you the corrections tomorrow.
