IB SPANISH B: Nombre______________________PREPARATION FOR WRITTEN ASSIGNMENT

You have been given copies of three sources about one of the core Language B topics.

I. Read all three sources. (not accessible electronically to prevent use of translators). As you read, highlight 4 – 6 key / important ideas in each text that summarize the main points. Annotate the text appropriately.

II. Take notes in the margins of overall ideas / your opinion / questions that come to mind III. Choose one type of text that you will create:

• Article• Blog entry• Text of a speech• Written interview• News report• Brochure• Email• Diary entry• Written correspondence (letter/s)• NO ESSAYS/REPORTS

IV. Write a statement of synthesis that can be used to CONNECT these three sources i.e. an opinion statement, an idea that has come to you after reading the three sources, a prediction for the future, an example of further impact, etc.

V. Write a 150-200 word rationale where you describe and explain:a. Your topicb. Why you’ve chosen this topicc. What type of text you will be creatingd. Who audience will bee. Objective: What you aim to prove or explain through your writingf. How you will attain objectiveg. Sources: describe all of them and how they will help you attain

objective

VI. Written production: The assessment of the task emphasizes content and organization over format. The student should demonstrate understanding of the subject matter of the written assignment, as well as the ability to organize and use the information from the sources. The student should:

• demonstrate understanding of the core topic• organize the information from the sources in a manner appropriate to the text• use the information from the sources to form a NEW TEXT WITHOUT COPYING. AVOID

JUST SUMMARIZING THE ARTICLES. NO CITING IN QUOTATIONS. EVERYTHING IN OWN WORDS.

• use language appropriate to the text type and purpose The subject of the assignment should have a specific focus, suitable for a piece of writing of 300–400 words in length.

VII. Check your work:• Did you refer to each of the three sources?• Did you address the aims/objectives outlined in your rationale?• Did you proofread your work for varied grammar/tenses, spelling,

style/register/tone conventions/complex sentences?• Does your written text follow the format of the type of text you chose?• Is your work organized and are all of your ideas supported by specific examples

(avoid generalizations such as “This is good….”)?

VIII. You may use a paper dictionary while doing your work. You may not speak to others.

EXAMPLE: You receive three sources about environment. One source talks about dangers of diesel fuel to environment. Another source discusses alternative energy solutions. A third source discusses environmental policies that different Latin American countries have. You can write, for example, a letter to the head of the defense department of a Spanish speaking country. In your letter, your aim can be to convince the person to take action to switch to more environment friendly energy solutions besides diesel. You can discuss the effects diesel has on environment and outline successful alternatives and successes they’ve had in other countries. As head of the department of defense, this person can then propose policy changes that limit use of diesel fuel by military. Your tone should be formal and objective. You should use the conventions appropriate for a formal letter. You can vary grammar by using preterite and imperfect to discuss past practices and solutions in other countries. You can use subjunctive to make recommendations. You can use conditional and imperfect subjunctive in hypothetical clauses. You can use appropriate greeting and closing to letter to show you know the formal letter format.

OR

You read three articles about domestic violence. One includes statistics about domestic violence in Spain. Another article is about a woman who was abused, what happened to her, how she finally left her abuser, etc. The last source is an article about a women’s shelter that provides free job training for battered women. You decide to create a pamphlet for battered women in Spain. The pamphlet will be given out at doctor’s offices, supermarkets, malls, etc. The objective of the pamphlet will be to encourage battered women to seek help. The pamphlet will be issued by a women’s shelter. You will use the source with statistics to provide statistics so that women know they are not alone and that many have gotten out of the abusive relationships. You will use the source about the woman’s experience to provide examples of strategies the woman used to leave her abuser. You will also use that article to provide a list of signs of abuse. You do not need to retell that woman’s story as an anecdote. You will use the article about woman’s shelter to get ideas for services your shelter can offer, such as free job training. You can also use the article about the battered woman to glean ideas of how she received help from women’s shelters. You will attain your objective of encouraging women to seek help by using a caring, empathetic tone, giving many examples of ways to seek help, providing confidential contact information, and making the first flap of your brochure appear as it were a Girl Scout Cookie campaign (in case abuser spots the pamphlet, so he/she does not know right away what pamphlet is about). You’ve chosen this topic because you know someone who was abused.
