2016 Christmas ProgramCarterGood evening! Thank you for coming out and supporting your child tonight. We are so excited to present to you our 2016 Christmas Program. My name is Carter and this is Lauren. We will be your MC’s this evening. All of us 2nd graders have been working on this program very hard for the last 3 months and are very eager to share it with you. We have a few ground rules we would like to make sure you are aware of to ensure that you have the best viewing experience possible. LaurenPlease silence all mobile devices. If you are taking a video or picture, please be mindful of those around you. It might ruin someone’s experience if they are unable to see their child due to your device being held up in the air.CarterPlease refrain from talking during our performance. We have worked really hard on this and want you and the rest of our families to be able to hear every part of the program. We have several different groups that will be transitioning on and off stage throughout the night. Please refrain from talking during these transitions, as well. We have worked hard on making our transitions as quickly and quietly as possible. You will be a huge help to us by staying quiet in the audience.LaurenWe like to hear feedback from the audience to know that we are doing a good job. Please feel free to applaud in between the various parts of our program to show your approval.CarterThat’s all of the rules. Now, we’d like to give you an idea of the layout of the program so you know what to expect. At the beginning of the school year, we told Mrs. Godfrey what we wanted to do most in the Christmas Program and she put us into groups. You will see these different groups performing their forte throughout the night.LaurenOur chorus will be singing 6 contemporary Christmas songs. These are not your typical Christmas carols, but are a little more upbeat and exciting. During 3 of these songs, our band will perform on bells, boomwhackers, and body percussion. During the other 3 songs, our dance group will treat you to a circle dance, a 1930’s inspired cane dance, and a country line dance. CarterIn between each song, we have a variety of Christmas jokes, poems, readings, and dramatizations to share with you. So, without further ado, let me introduce Nick, Mohamed, and Hillary. They will begin our evening on a light note with some Christmas jokes.

Jokes: NickDid you know Santa had only eight reindeer last Christmas?(Huh?)Comet stayed home to clean the sink.

MohamedWhat's red and white, red and white, red and white?(What?)Santa Claus rolling down the hill.

Page 4: Web view2016 Christmas Program. Carter. Good evening! Thank you for coming out and supporting your child tonight. We are so excited to present to you our 2016

In hopes that Saint Nicholas soon would be there.MaddieThe children were nestled all snug in their beds,While visions of sugarplums danced in their heads,And Ma in her kerchief and I in my cap,Had just settled down for a long winter's nap.XanWhen out in the lawn there arose such a clatter,I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter.Away to the window I flew like a flash,Tore open shutters and threw up the sash.BlessAnd what to my wondering eyes did appear,But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer; With a little old driver, so lively and quick,I knew in a moment it must be Saint Nick.MaxMore rapid than eagles his reindeer they came.He whistled and shouted and called them by name:"Now Dasher! Now Dancer! Now Prancer! Now Vixen! On, Comet! On, Cupid! On, Donner and Blitzen! To the top of the porch, to the top of the wallDash away, dash away, dash away all!"MaddieUp to the house-top the reindeer they flewWith a sleigh full of toys and Saint Nicholas, too.And then in a twinkling I heard on the roofAll the clattering noise of each galloping hoof. All bundled in fur, from his head to his foot,His clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;XanAs I drew in my head, and was turning around,Down the chimney Saint Nicholas came with a bound.A bundle of toys he had flung on his back,And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.BlessHe spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,And laying his finger aside of his nose,And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose.MaxHe sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,And away they all flew like the down of a thistle. But I heard him exclaim 'ere he drove out of sight,"Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!"

Mrs. Claus is sitting in a chair, reading. Santa is on the couch reading a newspaper, but is very restless. He reads for a minute, lays paper down and sighs loudly, pick paper back up and reads for another minute, then lays paper back down and sighs again.

Mrs. Claus: Did Happyeyes tell you the elves are almost out of red paint?

Santa: Yes, he did. (Goes to the window and looks out.) Has the mailman come yet?

Mrs. Claus: I don’t believe he has. Santa, have you seen Twinkletoes’ design for the new doll?

Santa: (Goes back to couch.) Yes, I’ve seen it. (Picks up the paper again.)

Mrs. Claus: Well, are you going to use the new design? That doll looks so lifelike! It will make little girls and boys so happy!

Santa: Twinkletoes can do whatever she wants. (Goes to the window again.) Are you sure the mail hasn’t come yet?

Mrs. Claus: It’s a little early yet. Santa, what about Happyeyes’ idea for the wagon with the steering wheel? Are you going to use that?

Santa: I don’t care – he can do whatever he wants. I just don’t care.

Mrs. Claus: Santa! Whatever I the world is wrong? You are so restless. You aren’t interested in any of the new tors. You haven’t been to the workshop in almost two weeks. The elves are almost out of paint and you don’t seem to care. At the rate we’re going, we won’t have the toys done by Christmas Eve. Whatever is wrong?!

Elves burst in.

Twinkletoes: Santa, come quickly!

Jingle: The brownies are fighting!

Happyeyes: They’re hitting each other!

Merrythought: I’m afraid they’ll hurt each other!

Santa: (Crossly) Don’t bring your problems to me.

Jangle: But Santa, they’re throwing sawdust all over the workshop!

Starbright: And they’re making the reindeer really nervous!

Santa: Well, a few nervous reindeer won’t hurt anything.

Page 9: Web view2016 Christmas Program. Carter. Good evening! Thank you for coming out and supporting your child tonight. We are so excited to present to you our 2016

Twinkletoes: Santa! What is wrong? The workshop is a mess, the brownies are fighting, the reindeer are nervous, the toys aren’t getting done – and you don’t seem to care! What is wrong?

Santa: (Growling) Nothing is wrong – except I think it looks silly to still have the Christmas tree up in July.

Mrs. Claus: But Santa, we’ve always –

Santa: (Interrupting) And turn off that miserable music! I can’t stand to hear another Christmas song! And now you elves come in with problems, problems, problems. Well, solve your own problems! I’m going to see what is keeping the mailman. (Santa leaves.)

Mrs. Claus: (Shocked) I can’t believe how Santa is acting!

Twinkletoes: He’s been like that for weeks.

Jingle: He’s been so cross.

Merrythought: He made us take down the Christmas tree in the workshop, too.

Starbright: We’re almost out of paint.

Jangle: The soldiers and the dolls are only half done.

Jingle: And we haven’t even started the bikes and wagons yet.

Mrs. Claus: Maybe Santa has just been having a few bad days. We all do now and then, you know.

Elves: I don’t know – I think it’s more than that.

Mrs. Claus: Well, I’ll fix his favorite dinner tonight and make sure he gets a good night’s sleep. He’ll probably feel better tomorrow. Now, you elves get back to work. Twinkletoes, come with me. I’ll send some cookies to the brownies. Maybe that will help make them stop fighting. Things will be better tomorrow, you’ll see.

Elves go out the door; Mrs. Claus and Twinkletoes go to kitchen. Santa re-enters – dejected – and sits on the couch.

Santa: Another day and still no letters. All I get is junk mail. Here’s a beautiful advertisement suggesting I come to Hawaii. Looks like a beautiful place, all right. But no letters from the children. Not one single child has written to say thank you for the toys they got last Christmas. Not one! (Big sigh) Maybe they didn’t like their toys. (Another big sigh) Maybe they don’t like Christmas anymore. Maybe they don’t like me anymore. Maybe I’ll just forget Christmas this year. I feel so sad. And I’ve been so cross with Mrs. Claus and the elves and brownies. I’m ashamed of myself. I feel so bad! Maybe a nap will help.

Santa lies down on the couch and takes a nap.

Mrs. Claus: (from offstage) Santa, dinner is almost ready. (Santa wakes up as Mrs. Claus comes onstage.) Santa, dinner is ready.

Page 10: Web view2016 Christmas Program. Carter. Good evening! Thank you for coming out and supporting your child tonight. We are so excited to present to you our 2016

Santa: What a great dream! That’s what we’ll do. We’ll forget Christmas this year and go to Hawaii.

Mrs. Claus: (Shocked) Forget Christmas?! Go to Hawaii?!

Santa and Mrs. Claus exit. Twinkletoes enters carrying a sign that reads “The Next Day” and exits again. Santa and Mrs. Claus enter again. Santa is wearing a Hawaiian shirt and carrying a suitcase.

Mrs. Claus: Santa, you weren’t serious about the whole Hawaii last night, were you?

Santa: Of course I was serious. We’re going to Hawaii instead of having Christmas this year.

Mrs. Claus: But Santa, what about Christmas – the elves, the brownies, the reindeer, the toys – and the children?!

Santa: We’re going to forget all that this year.

Mrs. Claus: Santa, you simply must tell me what this is all about. This isn’t like you. Please, won’t you tell me what is happening?

Santa: Yes, I guess I should. I don’t think the children of the world liked their toys last year. Maybe they don’t like Christmas anymore – maybe they don’t even like me anymore. Not one single child wrote me a letter to say thank you for the toys last year.

Mrs. Claus: But, I’m sure there must be an explanation.

Santa: Not one single letter.

Mrs. Claus: Usually you get bags full of letters saying thank you. There has to be some reason.

Santa: Maybe there is, but I’m not going to stick around to find out what it is – we’re going to Hawaii. I’ve got the suitcase right here. Let’s start packing.

Elves enter.

Twinkletoes: Hi, Santa

Happyeyes: How are you today?

Starbright: Are you feeling better?

Jingle: What kind of shirt is that, Santa?

Santa: It’s a Hawaiian shirt.

Jangle: But why are you wearing it?

Santa: Because, Mrs. Claus and I are going to Hawaii.

Page 11: Web view2016 Christmas Program. Carter. Good evening! Thank you for coming out and supporting your child tonight. We are so excited to present to you our 2016

Merrythought: But what about Christmas?!

Santa: We’re going to skip Christmas this year.

Elves: Skip Christmas!

Doorbell rings. The mailman enters with two big, full bags. Santa and the elves are on one side of the stage – Mrs. Claus and the mailman are on the other. The following is a double conversation.

Mailman: Is this the mail you’ve been waiting for, Santa?

Santa: Probably not. It’s probably just a bunch of children getting a head start on asking for stuff for next year. (Turns to elves) Come here, elves.

Mailman: (to Mrs. Claus) What’s he wearing that shirt for?

Mrs. Claus: He says he’s going to forget Christmas and go to Hawaii.

Santa: Now, I want you, Twinkletoes, to send the brownies home.

Mrs. Claus: (Starts going through the mail.) Santa, this is a thank you letter.

Santa: (Not listening to Mrs. Claus) And, Jingle, you get all the supplies put away.

Mrs. Claus: And here’s another thank you – and another!

Santa: (Still not listening) And Starbright, you take the reindeer to a boarding stable until you can sell them.

Mailman: Santa, these are all old letters. I just found them when the snow started melting.

Santa: (Still to Starbright) You ought to be able to get a good price for flying reindeer. (Finally hearing the mailman, Santa turns to the mailman and Mrs. Claus.) What’s that you say?

Mailman: These are all thank you letters from the children – from last year.

Santa: What do you mean? How could that be?

Mailman: Well, do you remember the fire we had at the post office in January? Some of the firemen must have thrown these sacks out behind the building when they were fighting the fire. And they must have been covered with snow when we had that big blizzard a couple of days after the fire. Anyway, now that the snow is melting we found them – and I brought them right out here to you.

Mrs. Claus: And they are all letters from children saying how much they liked their toys – they all say thank you.

Santa: You mean I was wrong? The children really did like their gifts? They really do still like Christmas? They really do still like me?

Mrs. Claus and the Elves: Yes, Santa!

Page 12: Web view2016 Christmas Program. Carter. Good evening! Thank you for coming out and supporting your child tonight. We are so excited to present to you our 2016

Santa: I almost made a big mistake! (To the mailman) Thank you for making the special trip out here to bring these bags – you’ve made me so happy. (To Elves) Forget what I said! Let’s get to work!

Elves: Yea!

Mailman: Hey, I’ll take those tickets to Hawaii off your hands for you, Santa.

Mrs. Claus: Well, I guess that shows how important it is to remember to say thank you.
