The Secret in the Woods

Cara and her friend Naomi had a secret hiding spot in the woods just beyond their elementary schools playground. During recess and after school, they snuck through a hole in the chain-link fence around the play area and rushed through the trees. Although their secret hiding spot was only a few yards into the woodsthey could still see the playground and the tall brick building of their schoolthey couldnt hear the shouts of the other children as they played basketball, soccer, or handball during these free moments in the school day. Luckily, they could hear when the PE teacher blew her whistle to signal the end of free time.

Cara and Naomis secret hiding spot was a hollowed out old tree. They crawled in like it was a cave, and they collected pretty leaves, flowers, and weeds, and dried them out by taping them with Scotch Tape to the sides of the tree. As a result, the inside of the treetheir cave smelled like sweet mulch. There was just enough room for them both to sit cross-legged.

Once, they had found a nest in their cave; a small round object made of branches. They put a few of the dried leaves and flowers on top of the nest to let the birds know they had been there. The next day, there were four small beautiful eggs in the nest, perfectly oval and blue. Cara and Naomi were excited, and looked forward to sharing their secret hiding place with a bird family. They wondered where the eggs parents were, and looked around in all of the nearby trees for signs of two little blue birds. But they couldnt find anything.

As the week went on, Cara and Naomi continued to explore the area around their secret hiding place in hopes of finding the two grown birds that had laid the eggs. But all of their searches were fruitless. They told themselves that the eggs would be all right: they were warm and sheltered in their nest.

On Friday, they hurried out to their secret hiding place, looking forward to saying goodbye to the eggs for the weekend. When they arrived, they noticed that all of the leaves and flowers that they had carefully taped to the tree were strewn on the ground. The nest was not in its perch on a ledge in the upper left-hand corner of the cave. Naomi grabbed Caras hand and squeezed tightly.

Where do you think they went? she asked.

Cara spotted the nest on the ground in a shadowy corner of the tree. She bit her lip. She couldnt show it to Naomishe was so worried about the eggs and the bird parents, and had even gotten a little lost in the woods looking for the birds the day before.

Cara tugged on Naomis hand and pulled her out of their secret hiding place. I bet the eggs hatched, Naomi! I bet theyre with their parents far away.

Tears filled Naomis eyes. I was hoping to see them before they went away. I wanted to say good-bye.

Its okaytheyre out learning how to be birds and hunt and stuff. Its a good thing. Theyre all grown up. Cara smiled at Naomi and guided her slowly back to the hole under the fence to their schools playground.

They walked over to the handball court, where their friend Stacy was winning every game, like she always did. They sat down on the bench and waited their turn to play. They both knew they would never visit their secret hiding spot again.
