Day Care for Dogs recording -

Every morning Denise takes a walk with Jesse. After their walk, Denise gets ready for work. But before she goes to work, she drives Jesse to a nearby day care center. Jesse stays there all day while Denise is at work. Jesse has lunch at the day care center. He enjoys play time and takes a nap there, too. This may not seem unusual. Many people take their children to day care centers. But Jesse is not a child. He is a dog. Jesse’s day care center is a place for pets.

Day care for dogs is very popular today. Many large cities have animal day care centers. Some pet owners, like Denise, are very happy with these day care centers. “I go to work early in the morning and come home late at night. I don’t like to leave Jesse at home alone all day. He gets very lonely because he has no one to play with.” Says Denise. “But when he goes to the day care center, he can play with other dogs. He runs around and gets a lot of exercise. And most important of all, he is not alone.”

Jesse goes to Doggy View Day care in Los Angeles, California. He plays with other dogs in a large backyard. There is a pool so Jesse can go swimming with the other dogs, too. The day care costs about U.S. $25 a day, but Denise’s neighbors are happy, too. Denise Explains. “When Jesse is home alone, he barks very loudly all day.

Yosuke Kawase waited in line for four and a half hours to ride Dodonpa, the fastest roller coaster in the world. Yosuke says, “I love the roller coasters, because of the thrill and the speed. I don’t mind waiting in line.” John Ivers lives thousands of miles away from Yosuke and he loves roller coasters, too. But he hates to wait in line. So he built a roller coaster in his backyard!

John lives in Bruceville, Indiana, in the U.S. He is an engineer. He and his wife, Sharon, have two daughters and four grandchildren. John built his roller coaster, the Blue Flash, a few years ago. It is 20 feet (about six meters) high. It travels over John’s barn, and around an elm tree. It goes about 25 miles (40km) per hour. Yosuke paid 1000 yen (about $7.75) for a one minute ride on Dodonpa. The Blue Flash is a much shorter ride, but the ride is free for all the Iver’s family. Most important of all, they never have to wait in line.

Now John is busy again. He is building another roller coaster. This one will travel around his garden. He says it will be bigger, faster, and better than the Blue Flash.

John is excited about his new roller coaster. But not everyone enjoys roller coasters. John’s wife, Sharon, doesn’t. She is afraid of heights and will not get on the blue flash.

A RACE TO GET MARRIED

On Saturday, April 7, Wanda Johns, 49, and Clarence Melion, 56, ran a five- kilometer race in Valparaiso, Indiana, in the U.S. This was not unusual for them. They both enjoy running and sometimes run in marathons, too. They both belong to the same running club and met at a race four years ago. But, Saturday’s race was a little different. When they finished the race, Wanda and Clarence got married.

During the race last year, Clarence asked Wanda to marry him. Wanda said “Yes,” but they didn’t know where to get married. Many of their friends are in the same running club. Clarence and Wanda decided to get married at a race so their friends could be with them. They both wore shorts, T-shirts, and running shoes at their wedding. Wanda also wore a white veil on her baseball cap.

Clarence usually runs five kilometers (about 3 miles) in about 25 minutes. Wanda usually runs the same distance in 27 minutes. But on Saturday, they ran the race together. They were almost finished when Wanda’s hat blew off. She continued to run, but Clarence ran back to pick up her hat. He picked it up and followed her to the finish line. Together they finished the race in about 33 minutes. Then they got married.
