“IF”
Over the next few weeks I will be taking my thoughts of these articles from the book “The Simple Truth” by Aaron Erhardt, a book that I would highly recommend.
As stated last week I asked the question can a child of God fall from grace? Two weeks ago I wanted us to notice how Paul made it very clear that Christians who had fallen into sin and if they did not change they would not be with Christ when they leave this world. To make it even clearer notice the word “IF.”
The word “if” is a little word with a big meaning. It is a conditional word. If a father tells his son, “I will take you to the movies if you clean your room,” we all recognize that the son must meet a condition before going to the movies- he must clean his room. The same is true with our salvation from sin. There are conditions we must meet and maintain. Notice the word “if” used in these scriptures. IF you continue in my Word (John 8:31), IF a man serve me (John 12:26), IF you keep in memory (1 Corinthians 15:1-2), IF we faint not (Galatians 6:9), IF we continue in the faith (Colossians 1:23), IF you do these things (2 Peter 1:10), IF we walk in the light (1 John 1:7). Brethren, every honest person can see that there are conditions that a child of God must meet and maintain to be saved. Even the most stubborn soul must concede that “if” is a conditional word.
Notice these examples- Actual examples of people who fell away in the New Testament Hymeneus, Alexander, Philetus, and Demas are all identified as having fallen from grace (1 Timothy 1:19-20; 2Timothy 2:17; 4:10). Ananias and Sapphira were members of the church in Jerusalem who were struck dead for lying to the Holy Spirit (Acts 5:1-10). What about Simon? He was a child of God who was told to repent of his wickedness, that he may be forgiven (Acts8:22). Would he be saved if he refused to repent? Of course not. The Bible is very clear that one can “depart from the faith” (1Timothy 4:1).
Brethren, the Bible is very clear that one can surely fall away from Jesus Christ. There is no such thing as once saved always saved. This is just a teaching made up by humans.
