English 12 Short Story Final Project Make sure you know all the following stories: “Hills Like White Elephants” by Ernest Hemingway “The Chrysanthemums” by John Steinbeck “A& P” by John Updike “Barbie Q” by Sandra Cisneros **** You will also be required to read one new story of your choosing . Make sure you know all your short story terms: plot, character, conflict, setting, flashback, foreshadowing, dialogue, theme, satire, symbolism, irony. Part A – Creative & Imaginative Projects 1. Re-write the ending or continue the story. Mirror the author’s style. 2. Twist the perspective or point of view in the story (ie: rewrite part from a different characters’ point of view or switch roles). 3. Make a movie-style poster to advertise the story including the title, author’s name, a little blurb, and imagery that reflects the story. 4. Turn the story into a song or poem… try keeping some of the narrative, use quotes or vocabulary from the story, find a style that matches the tone of the story. 5. Write a letter to one of the characters from the story questioning their motives, offering advice, and interacting with them. 6. Make a puppet show, video, or act out the story. 7. Make a sculpture, diorama, or mobile that reflects the story, its characters, themes, symbols, etc. 8. Draw a plot diagram of the story. Include information about plot events, conflict, characters, setting, and other literary elements. 9. Make a game (board game, video game, card game) that takes players through the world of the story. 10. Create an animation, graphic novel, or comic book of the story. Part B – Literary Criticism For this section you must write a short essay (350-500 words or so) using proper academic format. Your essay must include references to, examples from, and quotes from at least two stories (but you may choose to include more).
