Chapter 3 - Experimentation and Skills18

For the 3 weeks I shall be conducting serval experiments based on the influence of my literature review and to contribute to one of my ideas for unit 13.18

Experiment 1- this experiment is focused on colour and how people can relate to them through there emotions, I conducted a recorded interview with 13 people ages 16-20 years’ old all from various backgrounds such as being student, working, unemployed. So then it isn’t just from a group with a similar interest if not this wouldn’t be a fair result. So what I had done was print out 7 colours on 7 sheets of paper and also a sheet with various words and colour on it to see what their response maybe I asked each person 2 questions here they are:18

1.What’s the first word you see?18

2.How does these colour make you feel?18

Here are the results:18

Chapter 1 - Who am I?

Figure 3 April issue ELLE US Grunge

Styles: I believe style creates a large impact to what inspires me whether that’s through fashion, eras, types of art or even directing each one combines together to create ideas for most of my projects.

Fashion:

The likes of Grunge which inspires me through fashion

Grunge:

Back in the 90’s that’s where it all started, Dr Martens, double denim, baggy clothes and Band t-shirts. It’s one style I have always looked up to because it always seemed like they didn’t care what anyone else thought and just focused on their selves which I really liked.

Art:

Bold colours: I’ve always liked the way you can play with different colour and how much they stand out no matter where it is it will always grab your attention and create and effect.

Figure 4 Mark Chadwick Fluid 114

Abstract: The way the colours all flow together and what it shows on canvas where you are able to express yourself in multiple forms.

Pop art: The reason why I like pop art is through the bright colours and the comic like pieces of art which attracts the eye straight away and can be shown in various formats usually based on prints such as lino printing.

Artists:

Roy Lichtenstein: His art was associated with the movement of pop art where he produced comic like art each piece was created with acrylic paint where it was all collated into dots to produce his many renowned pieces that can be seen crossed the world

Andy Warhol: He is another artist who created pieces whilst the art movement pop art was at its highest popularity. His work got famous by him doing adverts and portraits such as famous actress Marylin Monroe by only using primary colours and that’s really what it was all about.

Matt Damon – Art director: He is a lecturer at UAL, director and art director of the adverts everyone raves about which is shown for the M&S adverts the brightness of the crisp colours as it all flows together into a master piece of only its own individual kind. It’s an art in its own form however with food the cinematic shots shown and combines together through the music and visuals that are just so memorable and something that I have never seen before.

Tim Burton:

Figure 6 Tim Burton Art – Monsters and Colours

Tim burton an American film director, who’s known for his dark twists towards his films with mixing horror with fantasy creating a world of his own. Whether it’s animated or live action. How he uses his mental health and imagination to bring them to life to share to his audience with directing a spectrum of films from a new turn on the Popular Disney animation turned live action Alice in wonderland, Beetlejuice and DC Batman and batman returns. The variety he has and the talent even if it shows through characters you would never expect to see with every film he creates it’s a surprise and when watching his films, you always have to have an open mind because who knows what he will come up with next. I just love his style of directing and how he always knows how to have his own artsy dark spin on a film or set designs which take you places you know you’ve never been before. Through using always similar actors in every film which I enjoy seeing each one transform into to what you call a typical one of a kind character.

Wes Anderson:

Figure 7 The Grand Budapest Hotel

Another American director who has again created his own path way and own style of directing and vision having what you would say indie films produced into a master piece of cinema with always a historic or cinie cam edge to his films and story’s you would never expect to be addressed. Like Tim burton he also has a very distinctive visual and narrative style such as one of my most loved films the grand Budapest Hotel (2014).

Mind hunter Netflix TV show:

Figure 8 Mind Hunter

This is an American series which is a live action psychological based in the 1970’s follows FBI agents interviewing US serial killers and recording their behaviours for them to develop a system which categorizes killers/serial killers and able to predict future behaviours which is based on a book called Mind hunter: Inside the FBIS Elite serial crime unit.

Psychology within the mind:

The mind is about mental processes, thought and consciousness. The body is about the physical aspects of the brain-neurons and how the brain is structured. The mind-body problem is about how these two interact.

Chapter 2 – The Report

The 1980’s an era where most films came to life and still had originality to them, to the start of famous franchises and to many successful careers. I’m here to explore 80’s films and to look at the actors and style of how each film is portrayed and given a connection to.

It was the start of many careers to with Tom cruise that is very well known a crossed the world had his first ever film called endless love in 1981.

The style of the acting and genre.

As noticeably I looked through the most popular films within the 80’s and it all went through to Rom com or Sci-fi it changed so much throughout the 80’s and I believe it was where Hollywood was at its highest in comparison to the British film industry at the time.

I’ve always loved the feel of an 80’s film the texture of the film to the storyline that makes you realise how much filmmaking and technology has progressed.

Here is a list of the top 10 highest grossing films in the 80’s

1. E.t the extra-terrestrial (1982) this was Director Steven Spielberg’s first major block buster of his time with the film even still being talked about till this day this had grossed $435.1 M with a 10.5-million-dollar budget which was absolutely huge amount of money at the time. This is where his career set him off through this film and the originality to it in which no one had ever seen before.

2. Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi (1983) This was the 3rd instalment of Star Wars from where the original storyline took place and more drama and attention was drawn to it with the original cast and taking you back to when it first came out and the excitement all of the public were to see the next one. Although the franchise is still going you can never compare an episode of an original Star Wars episode to the latest one Star Wars: The last Jedi (2017)

https://wiki.kidzsearch.com/wiki/Star_Wars_Episode_VI:_Return_of_the_Jedi

This grossed 309.13 M with the budget being 32 million dollars

3. Star Wars: Episode V – Empire Strikes (1980) this was the second instalment from the Star Wars franchise this was in 1980 after the first one had been released back in 1977 and was the start and one of the most remarkable moments when Luke sky walker begins his Jedi training with Yoda.

Which grossed 290.48 M dollars Budget: $18 M

4. Batman (1989)

This was the start of a whole new franchise and the even more popularity for Dc as well as having a Batman Television series to this was only however released at the very end of the 80’s but it sure did pay of this is directed by Tim Burton which I’m sure came as such a surprise when people heard of him to direct a DC film and not one of his peculiar misfit gothic films. As this was following the film Beetlejuice (1988) this grossed $251.19 M with the budget of $ 35 M.

5. The Film was again another franchise in which started up this was called Raiders of the lost Ark which is the first of the Indiana Jones series. This was at the very beginning of 1980’s with it being released in 1981 with a grossing of $248.16 M

The style of 80’s the most popular genre of the time was Sci-Fi, horror and action as well as a lot of coming of age films such as Sixteen candles and Ferris bullers day off and many more which are still renowned in today’s society.

The 80’s this was such an important era for the inspiration in which now in the 21st century where tv shows and films are based on those experiences such as the Award winning Tv show Strange Things (2016) although it was a sci-fi film its based within the 80’s with how they talk, dress, technology it’s all associated with what you call the last of the originals well that’s what I like to call it. The 80’s in what I believe were one of the last decades before people started to be inspired by films and have a similar twist to them. From when seven Spielberg created his second film from Jaws it was like the start of hit after hit with Steven Spielberg’s booming success even now.

80’s Films which inspired Stranger Things (2016)

But now I’m going to look at How one of Netflix’s popular Series Stranger Things (2016) got inspired by 80’s films and what ones. However, in my view Stranger Things has turned out to be a mix of all of these films combined.

One of the most successful Franchises Alien (1979) which made Ridley Scott known for him Directing This Sci-fi classic, so we meet the crew in Indiana this is exactly where stranger things is set where the Duffer brothers took inspiration from the Horror and Sci-Fi classic from the upside-down world and the design of the Demogorgon’s.

However, at the beginning of the Film industry within the 80’s it still had the influence of the 70’s culture and industry and the same with the end of the 80’s although it had its own style however this is what inspired the early 90’s films.

Altered States (1980) by British director in which he used Films to create a new style a controversial style and flamboyant which was very new and un expected for the 80’s but this film has a few influential scenes, this is a Cult classic where a guy explores the theory of human conciseness and this sounds very similar to the first time Eleven is plunged into her sensory deprivation tank to access the upside down world.

E.T: The Extra Terrestrial (1982) This is a Steven Spielberg classic and a film where everyone is still talking about it till this very day. As e.t is about a group of kids protecting a powerful new friend sound something very similar to Mike, Dustin and Lucas protecting Eleven.

Fire starter (1984) It shows This Tv show was inspired by many of Steven Kings Fire starter and IT. Fire starter is based on a young girl called Charlie McGee which is growing powers which are an inherited result of a shadowy government programme and again which is very similar to who and where Eleven was originally from .All I can say is that there are many more films I can add to the list I have already created it shows how much films and director influence the 21st century and generation of films now days you can never get an original film that isn’t based on a film or some kind of experience or type of media.

John Hughes he was a popular film director within the late 80’s and 90’s where he directed films such as the breakfast club (1985), Ferris Buller’s day off and sixteen candles I see them as chick flicks the time and era where styles and ways of romance changed but based on teenagers rather than the typical based on a 20-year-old rom com.

John Hughes was an American Film director, producer and screen writer. Where he directed some of the most successful comedy and teen films of the 1980’s. He also wrote a couple of books too. However, there’s to many countless films iam sure even now we watch 30 years on from him creating these one of a kind styles and ideas that many now days at least try to replicate or be inspired by to create another similar film of that kind.

However, John Hughes unfortunately died in 2009 at the age of 59 but even now they are creating remakes of his directing styles.

Chapter 3 - Experimentation and Skills

For the 3 weeks I shall be conducting serval experiments based on the influence of my literature review and to contribute to one of my ideas for unit 13.

Experiment 1- this experiment is focused on colour and how people can relate to them through their emotions, I conducted a recorded interview with 13 people ages 16-20 years’ old all from various backgrounds such as being student, working, unemployed. So, then it isn’t just from a group with a similar interest if not this wouldn’t be a fair result. So, what I had done was print out 7 colours on 7 sheets of paper and also a sheet with various words and colour on it to see what their response maybe I asked each person 2 questions here they are:

1. What’s the first word you see?

2. How does these colours make you feel?

Here are the results:

What’s the first word you see?

Horror: 1

Love: 2

Terror: 1

Excitement :3

Content: 2

Happy: 1

How does these colours make you feel?

Orange

Excitement, Danger, mellow, creative, warm, hot

Green

Tired, natural, normal, relaxed. content

Yellow

Summer, bright, happy, over excited, upbeat

Grey

Dull, Boring, no emotion, forgetfulness, nothing, solid, sad

Blue

Sadness, nostalgia, calm, dreamy, casual

Purple

Jealousy, night time, sick

Red

Death, blood, anger, roses.

Analysis- The result I found doing this interview was that I found it very interesting to see how the people could connect with a colour and each one either similar or polar opposite. such as the colour Red everyone either thought danger or love I noticed how different everyone interprets a colour such as the colour Blue I could maybe see it as a calming colour however someone might say it relates to feeling down or depressive.

Experiment: 2

What character does my target audience connect with the most? So, I created a man and a woman who are both in the business industry and based in the 80’s I chose the 80’s because it was a year that was the start of change and modernism. Here are the examples that I had created.

The business women description

Name: Business Women

Gender: Female

Age: 25

Marital status: Single

Location: City

Occupation: CEO of an insurance company called optima

Children:

Family: Mother and father

Siblings: One older sister in which she doesn’t see that often, her parents admire her more.

Animals: Two Cats one ginger and one grey

Hobbies: drinking red wine and watching films

Likes: Chinese takeout, David Bowies, Rom-Coms, being in charge,

Dislikes: Indian takeout, Tina turner, co-workers, being embarrassed on dates, the gym, and sister’s boyfriend.

Outfit: red lipstick, black high heels (in bag are trainers), pencil skirt, tote bag, white blouse, blazer

Favourite song: Don’t you want me – The Human League

Favourite Colour: Red

Favourite food: roast dinner

Favourite TV Show: Top of the pop’s

Favourite Film: Dirty dancing

She is a business woman, quite confident, messy, dedicated, single, only cares about work, stuck up to the CEO, knows what she wants, tries to be fit however never really has the time unless it means walking back from the local shop. Always ends up falling asleep at 7.30 pm with her two cats and no matter what, her name is always confused with other co-workers, being forced to go to some work meet ups because it’s better for her to know how they think and think of the company although she’s always bored and just basically zones out. Because everyone else is talking about statistics or family. She is a business founder which is on insurance.

The business man description:

Name: Business man

Gender: Male

Age: 45

Marital status: Relationship

Location: City

Occupation: CEO of an insurance company called optima

Children: Son and daughter who are both adults now

Family: Mother and father

Siblings: One younger brother that looks up to him.

Animals: None

Hobbies: Running, news, Music.

Likes: Horror, politics, mix tapes, rubix cube, Mimi Rogers

Dislikes: Indian takeout,

Outfit: black slack, black braces, stripped

Favourite song: Sweet child of mine

Favourite Colour: blue

Favourite food:

Favourite TV Show: F.R.I.E.N.D.S

Favourite Film: Pretty Woman

He is a business man who has a family and is highly regarded in the office, holds a lot of pride for who he is, outgoing, honest, however, in his mind it’s a totally different world he’s put on a front as if he doesn’t care what people think about him or his work but he actually does, he has a wife and two children who are both adults now. He is admired and looked up to from a lot of people but never seems to realise it. He wishes life could be more perfect but that’s how he sees it. Very stern and knows what he’s talking about is a business founder which is on insurance.

Through creating these descriptions, I began to show other people to see which one they emotional connect to the most it turned out to be the businesswomen, because most said that in the 80’s you didn’t really hear from the point of view of a woman in the business industry. Because they weren’t highly regarded in the 80’s.

Experiment 3-

How lighting is affected from using different colour gels to portray a mood.

With this experimentation I tested different settings on the camera to also get more of an understanding with aperture and shutter speed so then I can get the best out of the photos and lighting that I am using. I used five colour gels with each image being taken 3 times so then this will have an equal result when experimenting. The reason why I had done this was to test this ready for my final idea and to see what works and what doesn’t. As for my final idea I was thinking of either using colour grading or colour gels as the short film progresses the moods change which reflect within the facial and body language with the actor/actress as well as the changing of colour through lighting.

In this experiment I used 3 led lights, tripod and Nikon camera to complete this experiment I will be taking and changing the setup 3 times within the four colours I had chosen to see which one is the most effective. I will also individually analyse each one too

White diffuser

Green filter

Test one -

This is the first test using the green gel filter with both three-point lighting and changing it throughout as each experiment continues. Each of these colours will reflect a different mood onto the same subject. As diagrammed above. Within the first test it was about getting used to the settings within the camera and changing the intensity of the lighting.

Test Two- I brightened the key light much more and the backlight rather than the fill in as I wanted to create a dramatic effect and it defiantly gave the image much more intensity, learning which setting was best for this type of lighting to. This was one of my favourite set ups out of all three as this gave it more focus and it creates a curiosity/mystery outlook onto the character.

Test Three- With the fill light I actually turned it off and again just focused on the backlight and key light as show in the diagram above it was still a good outcome however with the light it straight away shows almost horror or some similar mood to that because of the shadowing on the face of where you can only see various detail of the face but mainly on the right side of the subject.

Analysis –

With the green filter my outcome was that it creates more of a green/white effect I preferred the third test because with how I want to portray the character as a mystery and it keeps on revealing secrets and emotions as the storyline continues as I believe this colour is very neutral it gives of a very mysterious feel towards the character. As well as it not being as over exposed as it was in the second test.

Low angle key

Low backlight

I had chosen the colour blue because this goes with the testing and interviews I had collated together with 13 people about their views on various colours such as blue which many said can be used as calm and neutral however of course this is dependent on the intensity of the colour so I took it to the test by changing the intensity within the 3 point lighting setting and taking away or adding more blue or brightness to the subject to see which looks more effective.

Test one –

Test one was a mix with only have one light that was covered up with a filler light as blue and the key and backlight was with a white diffuser just to test out what it will look like. I didn’t really like it as much as the other tests as it only showed a hint of blue which takes away the reason I’m using colour and doing this experiment.

Test two – This test was more promising through putting on a blue toned gel onto the fill and backlight and the key light turned off. This was less intense and didn’t give it an over powering feel to this photograph it seemed much more calmer and less focused on the shadowing although it was still more prominent as the last test. It was very subtle as well as the shutter speed working well on it too.

Test three- I put the backlight lower than the subject and kept the rest in the same position I just brightened the fill light more and shows up the blue which is much better and get the target audience to focus on the colour instead of the expressions on the subject’s face.

Analysis-

Out of all of the three tests I had done I prefer the last one as it still highlights the detail of the subject and draws you in because of the intensity of the colour so what I had learnt was the more intense the colour is the more emotion it shows and attracts the audience even more.

Test 1

Blue and Red Gel

Figure 18 Test 1 Blue and Red Gel

Figure 19 Test 3 Blue and Red Gel

Figure 20Test 2 Blue and Red Gel

I had chosen to end up experimenting with two colours blue and red this is the colour theme of the 3d glasses you use at the cinema and for me it represents a virtual reality, or some kind of other universe and it creates almost a confusion that what I believe representing those mix of colours are like.

Test one –

For the first test I used all areas of 3-point lighting with a key light which is the diffuser, fill which was the blue gel and the red was the backlight I put most of these as mid or low intensity’s as well as figuring out the best shutter speed which is found out made the image a little overexposed. However, it was my first of three practices with these colours I wanted to create a non-reality effect to the photo in which I think I did succeed in.

Test Two-

This was all mid intensity with changing the blue to backlight, red to key and the diffuser as a filer for some of the shadows that I didn’t want to be there. It was more intense then the first test, however if this was in the short film I don’t think it would have worked that well. I felt there wasn’t much difference however it made the edges much softer than the last test.

Test three-

The last test showed much more intensity and power to the subject because of how defiant the line is between the red and blue colour and almost blends into three different colours. Blue pink and red which flows really nicely and shows the more prominent the colours are the better.

Analysis-

Again, as the other tests I increased or changed the angle of the lighting I found out that test 3 was much better as it again draws more attention as it’s going to be all about the colour and also reminds me also of the Oscar award winning film moonlight to.

I used the colour red as this signifies danger, horror, terror through the intensity and brightness it all about the tones of the colours and changing the positioning of brightness of the led lights and heights to. This is to see what will look best and succeed to the look I want the image to look like.

Test one-

This was the first test out of three I decided to turn off the left light and key and just used the right just to see what effect it would give as well as getting used to the shutter speed needed for this colour so then it won’t be under or over exposed. This did go well as I liked the intensity it had however it was quite a hard type of lighting rather than a soft one in which I think always looks better for the light to look soft instead of harsh/

Test two –

For the second test I turned on the left led light and put a white diffuser on to it with it slightly softer comparison to the right one which had a very harsh tone with the red gel overlaying the light. However, I liked it because on the left side there was a shadow but wasn’t as prominent and I prefer that in comparison to the first test.

Test three- This was the last test so I changed it up with having the left and the right side with a red gel which of course had the result of it the red showing up more but in my eye I thought it looked to overpowering and still not as subtle as the second test as I felt it was more balanced with having a diffuser one side and a red gel on the other

Analysis –

Overall, I believe the second test had the best result as the red was much more subtle and didn’t look to overexposed in comparison to the last one which was to be overexposed and I think will distract the audience from focusing on the subject rather than the colour as the colour is supposed to represent the emotion rather than just getting the audience to just focus on for example the red.

Overall, I have learnt a lot with all of my experiments specially to do with colour and how a variety of ages and backgrounds see in a different light. Through the effects of lighting with colour and what a variety of colours make a person feel. All of these experiments will defiantly help me with continuing and detailing one of my ideas for unit 13.

Chapter 4 - Unit 12 Presentation and Plans for Unit 13

This chapter will include your presentation that you have given to the class and lecturers detailing the work and research you have produced, and your analysis of how that work, research and experimentation have informed your plans for Unit 13.

This week I had the opportunity to create a speech and presentation on the overview of my term whether that’s the experiments or even research that was conducted. This was a maximum of 10 minutes in formal speech/ presentation where I was given feedback and advice from tutors after the presentation.

Here is the speech I had wrote for the presentation:

Within this term I have been focusing on expanding and progressing one of my ideas for my final project so then I can explore more of the techniques and experiments that I may find useful for Unit 13.

Literature review

In the 1st week I carried out a literature review this was based on the research of 80’s films, directors and their styles. I’ve always loved the feel of 80’s films from the authenticity to the storyline that makes you realise how much filmmaking and technology has progressed. Many films we all know and love such as the director john Hughes he might be familiar to some of you, from the likes of the breakfast club and Ferris Bullers day off just to name a few. 80’s films are for me authentic and still the era of where fashion was at its highest and so was Hollywood to, as now these films that were produced or released in the 80’s inspires our generation today. As I researched further into the era of the 80’s and comparing it to now I found out that there’s only been a slight change to the films we now call classics.

Experiment 1

The next week I began focusing on experiments, the first experiment was based on Colour and how people relate to them, so I conducted a recorded interview with 13 people who were between ages 16-20 year’s old all from different backgrounds. about the reaction towards the connection with mood and colour so I had chosen 7 colours in which I thought will have different out comes. This experiment helped me understand even more ways to look at colour through how my target audience will connect with it. I found the results interesting such as the colour Red everyone either thought danger or love I noticed how different everyone interprets a colour such as the colour Blue I could maybe see it as a calming colour however someone might say it relates to feeling down or depressive.

Experiment 2

The second experiment conducted was associated with the two characteristics created to choose one of them as my main character. One of them is a man and another one is a woman which both work in the business industry. I had two different character profiles here they are:

She is a business woman, quite confident, messy, dedicated, single, only cares about work, always trying to please the CEO, knows what she wants, tries to be fit however never really has the time unless it means walking back from the local shop. Always ends up falling asleep at 7.30 pm with her two cats and no matter what, her name is always confused with other co-workers, being forced to go to some work meet ups because it’s better for her to know how they think about the company although she’s always bored and just zones out. Because everyone else is talking about statistics or family. She’s almost like the Bridget jones of the 80’s and always talks to herself or if not at least overthinks way too much sometimes your surprised her brain doesn’t explode.

Here is the other one:

Experiment 3

The next week I then conducted research which connected with my first experiment which was with mood and colour however, this time I used different colour gels and led lighting. To test out which setting had a better effect this was with 4 different colour gels which I tested and changed the setup of 3 times for an equal result. I found out that I had a variety of results. Each one I analysed and compared to see which one looked most effective to a mood I want to portray or if not effect.

How all of this connects with unit 13

Overall with doing the literature review to the 3 experiments it’s given an insight into thinking into more detail about one of my ideas for unit 13 through me wanting to have the aesthetic and a few other elements of an 80’s film. As well as using colour to portray a mood as this will be about the mentality and thoughts of a business women in the 80’s how she thinks and what she thinks about in various situations which change throughout the short film which will be a narrative. This is one of my ideas so far. however, with the experiments I conducted they produced more of an influence on this idea and detail than the rest. I hope this speech gives you more interest and information to what I have discovered, understood and researched into more depth.

As well as this I created a presentation and also a recording of my presentation to.
