My Restaurant (Grade 5)

* This will take 4 one-hour sessions*

OverviewThe purpose of this lesson is for students to improve skills used to gather information from various online resources in order to create a self made restaurant web site. The web site will be presented to the class to practice presentation skills.

Learning ObjectiveGiven access to the internet and a computer, learners will identify food information for their city to complete a website for a presentation according to the rubic.

Teaching Standards

EL.5.2 2006 - READING: Comprehension and Analysis of Nonfiction and Informational TextStudents read and understand grade-level-appropriate material. The selections in the Indiana Reading List illustrate the quality and complexity of the materials to be read by students. At Grade 5, in addition to regular classroom reading, students read a variety of nonfiction, such as biographies, books in many different subject areas, magazines and periodicals, reference and technical materials, and online information.EL.5.6 2006 - WRITING: English Language ConventionsStudents write using Standard English conventions appropriate to this grade level.EL.5.7 2006 - LISTENING AND SPEAKING: Skills, Strategies, and ApplicationsStudents deliver focused, coherent presentations that convey ideas clearly and relate to the background and interests of the audience. They evaluate the content of oral communication. Students deliver well-organized formal presentations using traditional speech strategies, including narration, exposition, persuasion, and description. Students use the same Standard English conventions for oral speech that they use in their writing.

Procedures

Day One

1. The teacher will begin the lesson by introducing the project.2. The introduction to the project should include why the students are doing

the project: They are going to learn how to find information on the internet that is relevant to a specific topic, and they are going to work on their presentation skills by presenting their finished web site to the class.

3. Ask students if they know how to find information that is from a “good” source.

4. Students should say what they think, and the teacher will write the ideas on the board.

5. The teacher will circle the correct answers, which should include: has an author and has been recently updated.

6. (Keep in mind that this is an introduction to the process of finding credible sources).

7. Pass out the rubric.8. Explain that the students will be pretending to start their own restaurant.

The restaurant that they create must have all of the components listed in the rubric.

9. Read through the information on the rubric with the class. Pause and explain each part of the rubric. For example: explain thoroughly that each student has the choice between Charleston, South Carolina, Savannah, Georgia, or Baltimore, Maryland. The food should be items that are common to the area. This means that students should not have chicken fingers as an item because that food is not a staple item for a specific state.

10. At this point, make sure all of the students’ questions have been answered before moving on.

11. Have each student make a section on a piece of paper that includes each item that is to be included in the website. An alternative to this would be to make a worksheet to be filled in as the students conduct their research. The sections should be: restaurant name, summary about the restaurant, three “fake” reviews about the restaurant from a customer’s point of view (These do not have to be researched, but the students can read restaurant reviews to get an idea of what goes into a restaurant review.), five main course food items, one appetizer food item, two dessert food items, the location of the restaurant, a little bit of history about the area the restaurant is located in, when the restaurant was opened, a restaurant slogan, the URLs for the websites that information has been gathered from, a price for each menu item, and a description included with each menu item.

12. Make sure that each student has a computer that has Internet access.13. Give the students time to look up and to gather the information that is

included in the rubric. Tell the students that a good way to find out what foods restaurants serve in their area would be to research actual restaurants from the area that they chose.

Day Two

14. Before beginning day two, the teacher will need to make modifications to the restaurant template within Google Sites. Scale down the side bar to only include: home page, menu, contact us, history, reviews, and references. Make a sample website so that the students have something to guide them. This will also be helpful when explaining the website portion of the lesson.

15. Invite the students to be able to have access to the modified restaurant template.

16. At this point, the students should have found all of their necessary information. The teacher will explain that the students will create a website.

17. Thoroughly explain each component of the website. For example: tell the students that they must replace the existing pictures with pictures that represent what their menu items would look like.

18. Allow the students time to work on their websites and walk around during this time, as students are more than likely going to have several questions.

Day Three19. Day three is meant to be another workday for the students to complete

their restaurant websites.20. Once the restaurant website is completed, have each student email the

website URL to the teacher.

Day Four21. Before day four, make sure to compile all of the website URL’s into a word

document so that they are easily accessible.22. Tell the class that they are going to be presenting their websites today.

They are to walk the class through their website and explain two of the food items that are on the menu. The students should not have a formal presentation prepared. The brief presentation should be about a minute to two minutes long. The presentation will help the students work on presentation skills. They should have learned basic presentation skills in third and fourth grade, but giving a quick reminder about what a good presentation should include could be helpful to the students.

23. Remind the students that when they present they should make eye contact, not fidget with their hands, and speak clearly so that an audience could easily hear them.

24. The order that the students present is up to the teacher. They can choose to go randomly, by order of volunteers, or alphabetically.

25. For each student, pull up their website onto the screen. If the classroom is equipped with a smart board then the student can click on the different parts of their website. If the classroom does not have a smart board then the teacher will have to click on the various parts of the website when instructed to do so by the student.

26. While the student is presenting, the teacher should hold his/her hand up when the student has presented for at least one minute. This will let the

student know that they have met the minimum time requirement. At one minute and forty-five seconds the teacher should hold up his/her hand again to signal that there are only fifteen seconds left. This will allow the student time to wrap up the presentation if he/she has not yet concluded.

27. When the student starts the presentation, start timing, and when the student ends the presentation stop timing. Record the time on the rubric. The time should be around one to two minutes.

AssessmentThe teacher will follow the rubric in order to assess the student. The rubric can be changed to fit the assessment needs of the teacher. The rubric can be filled out while the student is presenting his/her website or after the presentations are done. This depends on the teacher’s preference.
