NOVEMBER2016

From the Pastors’ DeskWHAT THE EARLY CHURCH LOOKED LIKE, AND THE CALL TO BE CHURCH NOW

The beginning of the church: Acts 2:42 says, “They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.”

These were central marks to the early church, and they are still marks of the church that we should pay attention to today. This is what we talked about at our theological conference in Kearney this month. This will also be the focus of what it means for us to be the church, as this year, we will be focusing on Bishop’s Elizabeth Eaton’s phrase, “We are church.”

However, as read about the early church, we discover in Acts2:43 that, “Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles.” This is perhaps an area we should be praying for the Holy Spirit to be moving within our hearts and lives together these days. It seems to take more and more to impress people these days about how awesome God is, yet if we put a kid in a room the awe factor and wonder suddenly rises exponentially doesn’t it? So when God says, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom belongs to such as these. I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” (Mark 10:14-15) Maybe God was encouraging us to get in touch with our inner child and not be afraid to be amazed by God’s works and find God goodness and awe in both the little and the big things. Things such as the miraculous colors of the trees and the crops ready for harvest, or the awe and wonder of our great God who gave his son to die for us, so that even though we are sinful and deserve death, God chose to forgive us and love us anyway.

At the Cross Generational Conference I went to at the beginning of October, the Acts 2 passage also came up, only the verses we focused on were verses 46-47: “Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.” So how about it? Are we meeting together often to break bread, and praise God? And if not, maybe we should. In the past, on several occasions, I know I have encouraged daily devotions, but what if those daily devotions were something we did together every day? Would not our hearts swell, and our relationships with God and one another grow stronger together?

Well in this conference, a model was brought forward for us to do just that, called Faith 5/GIFT, which was a “gift” to the whole family: both your personal one (which sometimes includes people who are blood related, but are your inner circle of people) and our church family. In this, you are encouraged to start where you are at, thus the first step after gathering your family together is to: #1. Share your highs and lows with one another. By doing this, everyone gets to speak themselves present by sharing stories of their day. Next, #2. We read God’s Word together. A great place to start, would be to read the Gospel lesson for the week every night during the “GIFT” time. After reading the God’s Word together, #3. You connect each other’s highs and lows to what was read in the scripture. This allows us to connect our everyday lives to God’s story and helps us to see where God has maybe been a part of our daily activities. Then, #4. We pray . During this time, we pray to God together lifting up one another’s highs and lows to the Lord’s presence and guidance. And lastly, #5. We bless one another. This means we remind one another of how we are all beloved children of God. Most blessings start by retracing the cross place on our foreheads at baptism by saying, “Name, remember that Jesus loves you no matter what.” Dear friends, no matter who is at your house at night, or even if you have to call and check in with a friend to do this, I hope that we will begin to engage in connecting with one another and God every day. If we do, God is sure to grow us and teach us more and more what it means to be the church and feel a part of God’s story. Amen.

May the Spirit be working in us all!-Pastor Becky Sells <><

WELCA Information – LWR School Kits

Why do we send supplies? “To the children who receive school kits, these supplies mean the difference between getting an education or not! In the places where LWR works, even a few required supplies like pens and paper may be more than families can afford. And when parents can afford to send one of their children to school, girls rarely get priority, yet the education level of mothers has the biggest input on development.” (Quoted from Lutheran World Relief’s website, http://www.lwr.org.)

St. John’s Confirmation students, parents, and other volunteers put together the school kits. Items were put into the backpacks ready for shipping. This was a Community Service project for the Confirmation class. A special thank you to ALL who helped.St. John’s members and WELCA donated money and supplies and a Thrivent Team Action card was given to purchase supplies for a total of 121 school kits. Very good! Thanks for your generosity.

October 2016 Board Meeting MinutesOctober 4, 2016, 7:00 p.m.

Members Present: Gaylord Cradduck (St. John’s), Ruth Drake (St. John’s), Nancy Meyer (Prince of Peace), Clark Poppert (Prince of Peace), Tim Stacy (First Lutheran), Joseph Chapman, Pam Norquest.

Members Absent: Pastors James and Becky Sells, Kathy Barnes (First Lutheran)

Nancy read from Jesus Calling and led devotions to begin the meeting.

Clark moved and Ruth seconded to accept the minutes of the August board meeting. The motion was carried.

Scheduled BusinessPastoral Evaluations: The council reviewed the completed pastoral evaluations from each church and noted that the evaluations were overall good for the pastors. A few evaluations noted some disorganization with youth activities and encouraged the pastors to

continue their attempts to reach inactive and new members. A summary of the responses and comments was to be distributed to the board members.

Review of the Year: Attendance percentages and changes in shared expenses will be discussed at a meeting of the treasurers in December once most attendance statistics for the year have been collected. Tim voiced a concern from First as to what the rent of the parsonage was being used for. Prince of Peace board members noted that maintenance of the parsonage had been ongoing and that projects were reported by the Property Committee in the annual report. It was decided that Prince of Peace’s annual Property Committee report be distributed to the board members from First Lutheran and St. Johns.

Advent Plans: It was decided that the parish would once again use their rotation of Wednesday Advent services. These services would consist of a soup meal at 6:00 p.m. with service following at 7:00 p.m. Prince of Peace will hold the first service on November 30th, with St. John’s following on December 7th and First Lutheran holding one on the 14th. There will be no service on the 21st, which is the last Sunday before Christmas.

Budget: The treasurers will meet later in October to discuss and select a compensation package for the pastors. Due to the low cost increases, the board recommended that the pastors continue to have the Gold+ option for their insurance needs.

The board discussed raises for the pastors, noting that the 3.6% increase to keep the pastors on the high end of the spectrum was low. Clark moved and Ruth seconded to recommend to the churches that they budget for a raise in salary, housing allowance and SECA allowance which would keep the pastors on the high end of the suggested compensation spectrum. The motion was carried.

The board discussed a raise for the administrative secretary. Clark moved and Tim seconded to recommend to the churches that they budget for an administrative secretary wage increase to $12.50 an hour, effective in February of 2017. After further discussion, Clark moved and Ruth seconded to amend the motion to $13.00 an hour instead of $12.50. The amendment and the amended motion were carried.

New BusinessParish Board goals: The parish board discussed their goals for how to keep the parish moving forward even when all is well. Nancy stated that she would like to start a book study for women and potentially men to unify the parish and bring it closer together. Clark noted that he would strive to be more thorough with church dealings and would work to be proactive instead of reactive. Tim stated that he would like to keep things running smoothly alongside his present candidacy to become a vicar in a neighboring community.

Christmas Eve Services: The parish board debated whether or not the 2015 Christmas Eve service schedule was adequate for this year as well. None of the churches had any issues with their time, so it was decided that the 2016 Christmas Eve services would follow the same schedule. First Lutheran and Prince of Peace will hold their services at 6:00 p.m. while St. John’s will hold theirs at 7:30 p.m.

Next MeetingThe next meeting of the Tri Point Parish board was scheduled for Monday, February 6th at 7:00 p.m. Discussion topics include election of officers, Lenten services and Easter schedule, and summer Vacation Bible School.

Tim closed with prayers and the meeting was adjourned at 8:07 p.m.

Don’t forget: Daylight Savings Time ends on Saturday, November 5. Don’t forget to set your clocks back one hour before

going to bed that night so that you’re not TOO early for church the next day!

Advent PlansThis Advent season, the series we’ll be implementing in conjunction with our Holden Evening Prayer Service on

Wednesdays will be “From Heaven Above.” Besides being the title for our series, this was also the title of a hymn beloved to Martin Luther. So as the 500th anniversary of the Reformation approaches (next October), we will be focusing on this hymn and the divine gifts that come down to us through the birth of Jesus. During the Sundays of Advent, we will also have inserts that will have a litany for us to use and a Bible reading for us to focus on each night. The weekly theme on the inserts will coordinate with the gift we will be focusing in on each Wednesday. The season of Advent starts on Sunday, November 27th.

Our first Midweek Advent Meal and Service will be held at Prince of Peace on Wednesday, November 30 th. The soup meal will start at 6:00 p.m., and our worship service will follow at 7:00. Our second Midweek Service will be at St. John’s on December 7th, followed by our third and final service at First Lutheran on the 14th. Both of these will be held at the same time and in the same manner as the first service. If you have questions, feel free to call the pastors or the church office.

Operation Christmas Child UpdateI recently had the opportunity to meet in Lincoln with the Operation Christmas Child Area Coordinator and several other Relay Center Coordinators. Hearing their stories was fascinating. Some of them have been doing this for almost 20 years and they are “on fire” for Christ. It was a wonderful afternoon.

One of the coordinators shared with us that she was asked, “Why pack shoeboxes, what is the purpose?” She said the answer lies in Matthew 28:19-20: Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. This is an opportunity for us to share the gift of God’s love with children who might not otherwise have that opportunity.

As an OCC Relay Center, we will be collecting gifts at Prince of Peace at the following times:Monday, Nov. 14th from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. – 4 volunteers would be greatTuesday, Nov. 15th from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. – 4 volunteers would be greatWednesday, Nov. 16th from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. – 4 volunteers would be greatThursday, Nov. 17th from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. – 4 volunteers would be greatFriday, Nov. 18th from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. – 4 volunteers would be greatSaturday, Nov 19th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. – 4 volunteers would be greatSunday, Nov. 20th from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. – 4 volunteers would be greatMonday, Nov. 21st from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. – 4 volunteers would be great

A signup sheet will be out after the Prince of Peace Soup Supper. Volunteers from across the parish are welcome! If you would like the volunteer and do not have the opportunity to stop by to sign up, please call me at 402-759-3463 and let me know when you would like to participate in this opportunity.

In addition to volunteers to help receive the gifts, we could also use an enclosed trailer to transport the cartons of gifts to Lincoln. Along with this, if you have a pickup and would like to volunteer to drive the gifts to Lincoln, that would be wonderful.

In addition to the above, one of the most important things we can do is to pray for the children who will receive these gifts and the opportunity for them to come to know Jesus as their savior.

Blessings, Ladonna Pendleton

SOS: Snippets on StewardshipThanks to Pastor Woody Chamberlain for the following article entitled “Am I Tithing Yet?”

“A member asked, ‘I give $50 a week. That’s $15 a week more than last year, am I tithing yet?’ And the answer had to be, ‘I don’t know.’ But you can decide for yourself since ‘tithing’ is based on the biblical principle of giving 10% of

our income. The New Testament book of Hebrews reminds us of Abraham’s

gifts, ‘Abraham gave one-tenth of all he had…’ (Hebrews 7:2, The Good News Bible).

As a helpful resource, compare the chart to the side with your weekly paycheck or your IRS return. If you are not tithing, we invite you to grow toward a tithe. If you are tithing, we invite you to celebrate generosity by growing beyond a tithe. Choose which growth step works for you, growing by 1% of your income each year, or growing by $1.00 each week.”

Pastor Chamberlain has certainly laid the groundwork for some soul-searching and thinking… Where will that lead us? What will we be motivated to do? God’s Spirit is moving amongst us.

On November 20th, First and Prince of Peace will hold a Thankful Sunday service. For this service, members are encouraged to donate canned food and other non-perishable food items to those in need. With Thanksgiving right around the corner, it’s a wonderful time to share our God-given blessings with those less fortunate.
